Utilitizing And Moving Beyond A Constructionist Approach To Trace The Emergence Of Racial And Ethnic Identities Among Pre-Mexican, Mexican And Americans Of Mexican Descent, Owen Williamson Dec 2008

Utilitizing And Moving Beyond A Constructionist Approach To Trace The Emergence Of Racial And Ethnic Identities Among Pre-Mexican, Mexican And Americans Of Mexican Descent, Owen Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

Cornell and Hartmann (2007) developed a constructionist framework that can describe the development of racial and ethnic identities. Yet this framework has greater utility than its authors have intended as it also provides the best rubric to date for comprehending the transitions between collective identity group types. This study engages in a thorough investigation of the development of racial and ethnic identities within the context of those that precede it via an ethnohistorical analysis. It also demonstrates that this framework is capable of describing pre-modern religious and national identity types in addition to racial and ethnic identity types. This permits …

Ontology Generation, Information Harvesting And Semantic Annotation For Machine-Generated Web Pages, Cui Tao Dec 2008

Ontology Generation, Information Harvesting And Semantic Annotation For Machine-Generated Web Pages, Cui Tao

Theses and Dissertations

The current World Wide Web is a web of pages. Users have to guess possible keywords that might lead through search engines to the pages that contain information of interest and browse hundreds or even thousands of the returned pages in order to obtain what they want. This frustrating problem motivates an approach to turn the web of pages into a web of knowledge, so that web users can query the information of interest directly. This dissertation provides a step in this direction and a way to partially overcome the challenges. Specifically, this dissertation shows how to turn machine-generated web …

A Population Genetic Study Of Middle Eastern Populations Using Dys 458 Microvariants And Cohen Modal Haplotypes, Enass Nabeel Tinah Dec 2008

A Population Genetic Study Of Middle Eastern Populations Using Dys 458 Microvariants And Cohen Modal Haplotypes, Enass Nabeel Tinah

Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive population study in the Middle East was conducted using different genetic markers in order to establish a wider genetic profile of the Middle Eastern populations. The main goal of this study was to analyze DNA from samples collected from different locations, and produce genetic motifs and patterns that could be used to identify and distinguish the target populations. This information will allow us to analyze the ancestry of these populations, their interactions through time and space, and the effects these interactions have on the populations' structure. We have collected around 1300 individual samples from different populations in the …

Using Geoscience Education Graduate Students To Help Faculty Transform Teaching Practice, Teagan L. Tomlin Dec 2008

Using Geoscience Education Graduate Students To Help Faculty Transform Teaching Practice, Teagan L. Tomlin

Theses and Dissertations

Universities make claims about student learning that graduates don't often achieve and are under pressure to show improvement in teaching and learning in their undergraduate programs. This has been the constant focus of university-level professional development programs, but most teachers are still not using the most effective teaching methods. Individual departments need to find ways to help their instructors overcome three main challenges associated with adopting more effective student-centered teaching methods. No matter what strategy is adopted, instructors need considerable support to 1) change their beliefs about what constitutes effective teaching and learning, 2) learn to effectively implement new strategies, …

Assessing Water Quality Modeling In Subtropical Regions Based On A Case Study Of The Aguamilpa Reservoir, Oliver Obregon Dec 2008

Assessing Water Quality Modeling In Subtropical Regions Based On A Case Study Of The Aguamilpa Reservoir, Oliver Obregon

Theses and Dissertations

The shortage of water in Mexico has made public and private institutions look at reservoirs as an alternative solution for present and future water supply. However, eighty percent of the existing reservoirs in Mexico are contaminated at some level, many severely. Water quality models are water-management tools used to diagnose water quality problems and the impact of various environmental conditions. They can be effective in assessing various measures of remediation leading to improved water quality. In most of the cases such water quality models have been successfully applied in reservoirs located in temperate climates. However, the use of water quality …

Resurrecting Speranza: Lady Jane Wilde As The Celtic Sovereignty, Heather Lorene Tolen Dec 2008

Resurrecting Speranza: Lady Jane Wilde As The Celtic Sovereignty, Heather Lorene Tolen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the ways in which Lady Jane Wilde, writing under the pen name of Speranza, established ethos among a poor, uneducated, Catholic populace from whom she was socially and religiously disconnected. Additionally, it raises questions as to Lady Wilde's exclusion from the roster of Irish literary voices who are commonly associated with the Irish Literary Revival, inasmuch as Lady Wilde played a critical, inceptive role in that movement. Lady Jane Wilde, mother of Oscar Wilde, was an ardent nationalist who lived in Victorian Ireland. She contributed thirty-nine poems and several essays to the Nation newspaper—a nationalist publication—under the …

Picornaviruses are responsible for some of the most common and debilitating diseases affecting humans and animals worldwide. The objectives of this dissertation research were (1) estimate phylogenetic relationships among 11 picornavirus genera and within three species: foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV: Aphthovirus) which afflicts cloven-hoofed animals and human rhinovirus A and B (HRV: Enterovirus) which cause the common cold; (2) better understand the impact recombination has on genomic organization and evolution; (3) characterize where positive and purifying selection has occurred in proteins and how selection has influenced phenotype. The dissertation includes four studies. The first chapter provides an overview of the …

Rethinking The Historical Lens: A Case For Relational Identity In Sandra Cisneros's The House On Mango Street, Annalisa Wiggins Nov 2008

Rethinking The Historical Lens: A Case For Relational Identity In Sandra Cisneros's The House On Mango Street, Annalisa Wiggins

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis proposes a theory of relational identity development in Chicana literature. Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands/La Frontera offers an interpretation of Chicana identity that is largely based on historical models and mythology, which many scholars have found useful in interpreting Chicana literature. However, I contend that another text, Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street, not only illustrates the need for an alternative paradigm for considering identity development, but in fact offers such an alternative. I argue that Cisneros shows a model for relational identity development, wherein the individual develops in the context of her community and is not determined solely …

Into The Imagined Forest: A 2000-Year Retrospective Of The German Woods, Richard Hacken Oct 2008

Into The Imagined Forest: A 2000-Year Retrospective Of The German Woods, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

In a "House of Learning" lecture in the Harold B. Lee Library in October, 2008, Richard Hacken gave this presentation, a combination of text and images. Coming from the history of ideas, this retrospective of the German woods looked at historical, linguistic, artistic, philosophical, political, literary, cultural, and of course botanical aspects of the German forest. In summary, five major forest themes arise from Germans imagining their own German woods: (1) taming the external and internal wilderness; (2) establishing social justice; (3) advocating national unity; (4) maintaining a sense of the sacred; and (5) encouraging ecological awareness.

Effects Of A Spring Prescribed Burn On The Soil Seed Bank In Sagebrush Steppe Exhibiting Pinyon-Juniper Expansion, Elizabeth A. Allen, Jeanne C. Chambers, Robert S. Nowak Sep 2008

Effects Of A Spring Prescribed Burn On The Soil Seed Bank In Sagebrush Steppe Exhibiting Pinyon-Juniper Expansion, Elizabeth A. Allen, Jeanne C. Chambers, Robert S. Nowak

Western North American Naturalist

Pinyon-juniper (Pinus monophylla–Juniperus osteosperma) woodlands are expanding into shrubsteppe ecosystems in western portions of the Great Basin. Often, highly competitive trees displace the understory, and prescribed fire is increasingly used as a restoration tool. To inform management decisions about post-fire recovery, we examined immediate and long-term (i.e., 2 growing seasons) responses of the germinable seed bank to a spring prescribed fire. One week before and 1 week after a May 2002 prescribed burn, soil samples were taken under P. monophylla trees, under Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana shrubs, and from interspace microsites. Two growing seasons after the prescribed burn, …

Seed Germination Of The Invasive Plant Brassica Tournefortii (Sahara Mustard) In The Mojave Desert, Dianne N. Bangle, Lawrence R. Walker, Elizabeth Ann Powell Sep 2008

Seed Germination Of The Invasive Plant Brassica Tournefortii (Sahara Mustard) In The Mojave Desert, Dianne N. Bangle, Lawrence R. Walker, Elizabeth Ann Powell

Western North American Naturalist

In the southwestern United States, Brassica tournefortii (Gouan) is a highly invasive plant that threatens native annuals. We conducted 5 experiments to help define the environmental limits for B. tournefortii germination. We found that this species germinates at a wide range of temperatures (16°C to 32°C), under moderate salt concentrations (up to 3.20 dS · m−1), in 24 hours of light or darkness, and after 10 weeks of submergence in water. These germination characteristics make B. tournefortii a potentially vigorous competitor of native annuals in the Mojave Desert. The fact that B. tournefortii can take advantage of and …

Observations Of Shoaling And Feeding Behavior Of June Sucker, Chasmistes Liorus, In A Refuge Population, Eric J. Billman Sep 2008

Observations Of Shoaling And Feeding Behavior Of June Sucker, Chasmistes Liorus, In A Refuge Population, Eric J. Billman

Western North American Naturalist

Observations of shoaling and feeding behavior of the zooplanktivorous June sucker, Chasmistes liorus, were made during summer 2003 in Red Butte Reservoir, Utah. Water clarity limited observations to 0.5–1.5 m below the water surface. Schools of adult suckers, ranging from a few to >200 fish, were observed on 20 days from May to September. I classified them as schools rather than shoals because the groups moved synchronously rather than appearing simply as an aggregation of fish. These schools were near the water surface, generally in areas of the reservoir with a water depth of >3 m, and presumably fed …

Memoirs Of The Persecuted: Persecution, Memory, And The West As A Mormon Refuge, David W. Grua Aug 2008

Memoirs Of The Persecuted: Persecution, Memory, And The West As A Mormon Refuge, David W. Grua

Theses and Dissertations

The memory of past violence in Missouri and Illinois during the 1830s and 1840s shaped how members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Latter-day Saints or Mormons) saw themselves, their persecutors, and the states and the nation where the violence occurred. This thesis explores the role of collective memory of violence in forming Mormon identities and images of place from 1838, when governor Lilburn W. Boggs expelled the Latter-day Saints from Missouri, to 1858, with the conclusion of the Utah War. I argue that Latter-day Saint authors during these two decades used the memory of persecution to …

Music And The Modern Maya: A Reception Study Of Rock-Maya Music In Guatemala, Malcolm Miguel Botto Jul 2008

Music And The Modern Maya: A Reception Study Of Rock-Maya Music In Guatemala, Malcolm Miguel Botto

Theses and Dissertations

The current global flows of people, capital, technology, images and ideas--a phenomenon described as "mediascapes" by Arjun Appadurai (1996), traverse the most isolated Maya communities in Guatemala. These flows have recently influenced the creation of hybrid media products among the Maya. Among them we find an emerging indigenous musical genre called "Rock-Maya." I use reception analysis methods to document the encoding and decoding of this new indigenous medium of communication. Through qualitative interviews I attempt to show how K'iche'-Maya youth appropriate, what Motti Regev (1997) calls, the rock aesthetic to promote a sense of K'iche'-Maya youth identity in a modern …

Religious Networks As A Sociolinguistic Factor: The Case Of Cardston, Benjamin Joseph Chatterton Jul 2008

Religious Networks As A Sociolinguistic Factor: The Case Of Cardston, Benjamin Joseph Chatterton

Theses and Dissertations

Religious affiliation and its inherent membership in an associated social network as a sociolinguistic factor is examined in the community of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in Cardston, Alberta. Building on Meechan's 1998 findings that the LDS community in the area used Canadian Raising in a different set of phonotactic environments than the surrounding non-LDS English speakers, the study aims to determine if the LDS community uses other Canadian speech features differently or less frequently and if any Utah features (defined as Utah English in the literature, being the language of LDS English speakers in Utah) have continued from the settling of …

Developments In Urban Environmental Information Perception And Communication, Kostas Karatzas, J. Lee Jul 2008

Developments In Urban Environmental Information Perception And Communication, Kostas Karatzas, J. Lee

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Urban environmental information (EI) is related to knowledge concerning the status, the pressures and the consequences of environmental quality parameters to human life and the urban surroundings. One of the most important aspects in the life cycle of EI is knowledge generation and flow, data management and information dissemination between ICT systems and environmental actors, players, or interested parties. In the present paper, urban air quality serves as the application domain, for which the following issues are discussed, • Analysis of the way that environmental information is related to urban structures (roads, buildings, etc) • Investigation of the spatial and …

Eururalis, A Discussion Support Tool For Rural Europe, W. A. Rienks, S. B. Hoek, P. J. F. M. Verweij, R. M. Lokers, B. Vanmeulebrouk

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

European rural areas have changed considerably in the past decades. Agriculture intensified whilst in other areas it marginalized. The rural landscape changed and it will continue to change in future. The forces driving that change are increasingly global by nature: demography, economic growth, climate change and international trade policies. The Eururalis 2.0 project assesses the combined impact of these driving forces. The results are published on a computer based tool to support discussions and to raise awareness of future changes in rural areas. The tool was made suitable for a wide audience, with policy makers as the main target group.

Radar-Based Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval Over Agricultural Used Sites – A Multi-Sensor Approach, M. Pause, Martin Volk, K. Schulz Jul 2008

Radar-Based Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval Over Agricultural Used Sites – A Multi-Sensor Approach, M. Pause, Martin Volk, K. Schulz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Spatial distributed information of isochronal surface soil moisture is very important to compensate the inaccuracy of initial conditions and the uncertainty of parameters in hydrological models at the landscape scale. In this paper the conceptual procedure to derive spatial distributed surface soil moisture values from synthetic aperture radar data by using ancillary optical remote sensing data is presented. Different biophysical vegetation parameters like vegetation water content and leaf area index overlay the soil moisture information on the microwave signal and hamper the application of many existing models. Therefore the objective of the proposed study is to test the performance of …

Addressing Cultural And Institutional Barriers To Data And Model Interoperability, P. Dibner, David Arctur Jul 2008

Addressing Cultural And Institutional Barriers To Data And Model Interoperability, P. Dibner, David Arctur

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Despite recent technological advances, proliferation of online databases and community data collection and modeling efforts, the environmental observatory and modeling communities remain fragmented due to the lack of summaries of available observations data, differences in information models and metadata, lack of common data discovery and access protocols tuned to model requirements, and significant semantic differences in data description. However, purely technical solutions for interoperability are insufficient for establishing a shared interoperable infrastructure. The establishment of any technology in a population of potential adopters takes place within a context of social and economic processes. A community cannot become instantaneously aware of …

Identifying State Variables In Multivariate Hydrological Time Series Using Time Series Knowledge Mining, O. Gronz, M. C. Casper, P. Gemmar Jul 2008

Identifying State Variables In Multivariate Hydrological Time Series Using Time Series Knowledge Mining, O. Gronz, M. C. Casper, P. Gemmar

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The challenge of modeling rainfall-runoff processes is to define a suitable functional relationship between input variables representing precipitation measurements and the output runoff. Depending on the system’s state, the amount of precipitation resulting in direct flow varies strongly. Thus, state variables indicating the system’s actual state can enhance the accuracy of rainfall-runoff models significantly. Fuzzy models of Takagi-Sugeno-type are one of the effective approaches to simulate rainfall-runoff processes regarding the different system states. The design of a fuzzy rainfall-runoff model consists of two essential steps: the definition of the structure (input quantities, state variables, rules) and the identification of parameters …

Integrated Modeling Of Agricultural Land Use Change In Romania: From Retrospective Causal Analysis To Future Developments, Tobia Lakes, Daniel Müller Jul 2008

Integrated Modeling Of Agricultural Land Use Change In Romania: From Retrospective Causal Analysis To Future Developments, Tobia Lakes, Daniel Müller

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Agricultural land use changed rapidly in Central and Eastern Europe following the collapse of socialism. Cropland is arguably the most dynamic land use class, with cropland abandonment typically exceeding cropland expansion. Yet to date there has been little empirical evidence on the rates, patterns, and processes of cropland change for Central and Eastern Europe. To remedy this, we integrated socioeconomic and environmental data and employed exploratory statistics with predictive simulations to study the causes of past changes, as well as to forecast future cropland development in Arges County, Romania. In a first step, we used spatially explicit logistic regressions to …
