From Newspaper Row To Times Square: The Dispersal And Contested Identity Of An Imagined Journalistic Community, Dale L. Cressman Phd

Until the early twentieth century, Park Row was synonymous with New York newspapers. Of the newspapers that left Park Row, The New York Times was notable for having established a geographic landmark that was identified with the newspaper. In fact, by 1906, Times Square had replaced Park Row as a place for New Yorkers to get election night news or to celebrate New Year's Eve. Nevertheless, Times Square did not remain associated with its newspaper namesake, and today a successor to the "zipper" is the last physical reminder of the paper's presence in this area of New York City. Erratic Monsoon, Growing Water Demand, And Declining Water Table
Erratic Monsoon, Growing Water Demand, And Declining Water Table
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
In India, water resources are governed by the southwest monsoon. The water demand is increasing day by day due to population growth, rapid urbanisation, and multiple cropping practices. Due to changing climatic conditions monsoon, the chief controller of rainfall is found to be very irregular. Erratic monsoon with insufficient rainfall in combination with high heat-flow and over-exploitation of ground water imparts stress on the water resources, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Time-series analysis of water-table fluctuations provides idea about temporal variation of aquifer-recharge and availability of ground-water resources. In the present study, an attempt has been made to assess …

Evaluation Of Total Runoff For The Rio San Pedro Sub-Basin (Nayarit, Mexico) Assessing Their Hydrologic Response Units
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
The Rio San Pedro sub-basin runoff was estimated using the curve number method (NRCS-CN) applied to hydrologic response units (HRU’s), derived from remote sensing and GIS analysis. The sub-basin (around 2900 km2) was delineated from digital elevation models (DEM), that also were used to obtain the slopes in the study area. A landscape characterization (overall accuracy > 80%), based on Landsat ETM+ imagery, was obtained using standard classification methods, and together with a rainfall data series, were the input information for the sub-basin discretization in HRU’s and the runoff calculation. Seventeen HRU’s were obtained, that can be arranged in …

Assessment Of Spatial Patterns Of Sediment Transport And Delivery For Soil And Water Conservation Programs
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Soil erosion has tremendous impacts on most river systems throughout the United States. Such non-point pollution results from land-use and agricultural practices and leads to sedimentation downstream, a decrease in the transport capacity of streams, an increase in the risk of flooding, filling of reservoirs, and eutrophication. This paper uses a spatially-explicit model to identify the sediment sources and delivery paths to channels and link these sediment supply processes to in- channel sediment transport and storage. The paper analyzes hillslope erosion and deposition rates using the Unit Stream Power Erosion and Deposition model in a GIS to estimate patterns of …
“The Whole Is An Idle Dream:” The Early Modern And Post-Modern Quest For Cathay, Adele Lee
“The Whole Is An Idle Dream:” The Early Modern And Post-Modern Quest For Cathay, Adele Lee
Quidditas
This article examines how the Renaissance English understood and responded to the land of Cathay. It argues that although Cathay is technically just another name for China it represented a separate conceptual realm in this period. In other words, Cathay must be considered as being, in many ways, a distinct discursive construct. Viewed as the ‘glittering prize’ of the East India Company, Cathay, which fuelled countless (doomed) attempts at discovery, possessed characteristics both Chinese and Tartar. Descriptions of it converged and diverged simultaneously with descriptions of China and Tartary. As well as being a culturally liminal entity, Cathay was also …
The Convent As Cultural Conduit: Irish Matronage In Early Modern Spain, Andrea Knox
The Convent As Cultural Conduit: Irish Matronage In Early Modern Spain, Andrea Knox
Quidditas
Irish catholic women religious who migrated to Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries established a strong tradition of schools, hospitals and charitable institutions. Education and learning were important to Irish communities, and were recognised within Spain. Irish nuns and their convents were not part of an enclosed tradition and outreach work was a central aim. Sponsorship links between women were part of a collective plan, and cultural matronage by and for women appears to have been very effective. Censorship by the Inquisition and tridentine orthodoxy was contested by women’s religious houses which resisted censorship of book collections and art …

Thomas Farrar Whitley's Mission Photos Of Tonga, 1935–1938, Colleen Whitley
BYU Studies
Thomas Farrar Whitley served an LDS Church mission to Tonga in the late 1930s and documented his experiences there through journaling, correspondence, and photography. The author shares photographs and quotes from Whitley's journal, capturing the Tongan way of life in the 1930s. The article documents the small group of faithful Latter-day Saints and missionaries who established a foothold for the faltering Church in Tonga and created a foundation upon which today's thriving Tongan LDS population could build.

The Patterns Of Missionary Work And Emigration In Early Victorian Buckinghamshire, England, 1849–1878, Ronald E. Bartholomew
BYU Studies
Latter-day Saint missionaries from America began proselyting in Buckinhamshire, England, in the 1840s and established the first branches of the Church here in 1849, but they did not experience the same dramatic successes their colleagues encountered in other regions of the British Isles.

Abstract
This paper on the flowering plants of the Society Islands, French Polynesia, treats 114 families of dicots and 27 families of monocots. Included within them are at least 1166 species in 681 genera. Many additional species are highlighted and discussed where relevant information is available about them, but are not included in keys to genera, and generic descriptions are not provided; neither are they included in the above total figures. About two-thirds of the species have been introduced since the arrival in the Islands of the ship Endeavour commanded by Captain James Cook in 1769. His botanists, Joseph Banks …

Karlsgrab: The Site And Significance Of Charlemagne’S Sepulcher In Aachen, John F. Moffitt
Quidditas
The intention of what follows is to clear up one of the mysteries still surrounding the Charles the Great, now most commonly known by his later appellation “Charlemagne.” Born in 742, the son of King Pepin the Short (ca. 714-768), Charlemagne ruled as king of the Franks after 768; he additionally ruled as Emperor of the West, from 800 until his death in 814. Sources in his time presented him as an emulator and successor of Constantine the Great, and successive Western Emperors presented their own personae as successors of Charlemagne. In 1165, 350 years after Charlemagne’s death, Emperor Frederick …
Mormon Cinema On The Web, Randy Astle
Mormon Cinema On The Web, Randy Astle
BYU Studies
Mormon cinema on the Internet is a moving target. Because change in this medium occurs so rapidly, the information presented in this review will necessarily become dated in a few months and much more so in the years to come. What I hope to provide, therefore, is a snapshot of online resources related to LDS or Mormon cinema near the beginning of their evolution. I believe that the Internet will become the next great force in both Mormon cinema and world cinema in general, if it has not already done so. Hence, while the current article may prove useful for …

Defaults often have a large influence on consumer decisions. We identify an overlooked but practical alternative to defaults: requiring individuals to make an explicit choice for themselves. We study such “active decisions” in the context of 401(k) saving. We and that compelling new hires to make active decisions about 401(k) enrollment raises the initial fraction that enroll by 28 percentage points relative to a standard opt-in enrollment procedure, producing a savings distribution three months after hire that would take 30 months to achieve under standard enrollment. We also present a model of 401(k) enrollment and derive conditions under which the …
Biblical Naming Reports With, Dana M. Pike
Biblical Naming Reports With, Dana M. Pike
Faculty Publications
This study reviews the naming reports in the MT r that contain the phrase [Hebrew text] () in order to analyze the current practice of regularly rendering the subjects of these reports as indefinite. Though this is understandable in some cases, I contend that many of these subjects can just as well be understood as definite. Whereas the difference may seem insignificant in some passages, rendering the subject as definite is productive in others. A complete examination of all biblical naming reports is a large and complex undertaking, well beyond the limitations of the present study. This review of the …
