A New Genus, Ileopeltus, Related To Chlorotettix (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), Paul S. Cwikla
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
On the basis of their unique genitalic characters, the Neotropical leafhopper species previously treated in the genus Doleranus Ball are placed in a new genus, Ileopeltus. Twelve species are treated, including six described as new. A key to the species and a cladistic hypothesis using Chlorotettix Van Duzee as the outgroup are presented. The new species of Ileopeltus include: nanocanthus (Panama), dorsalus and clavatus (Brazil and Venezuela), ventriculus and haplus (Brazil), and blockeri (Venezuela).

The Bureau of Reclamation recently announced that its prime mission since 1902-building dams to make the desert bloom in the American West-is pretty much complete. While never really admitting that its newer projects have been economically infeasible, Bureau management has at last recognized that the days of the big public water project are gone. The Bureau now plans to turn its attention and resources to other more pressing problems, such as helping other agencies with construction projects needed to cope with hazardous waste.

Checklist Of The Mosses Of The Intermountain West, Usa, John R. Spence
Great Basin Naturalist
A revised list of the mosses of the Intermountain West, including all of Utah and Nevada and parts of surrounding states, is presented. Recorded are 342 species in 122 genera and 39 families in this region. Nomenclatural and taxonomic changes as well as floristic additions since the publication of Seville Flowers's book are included.

Studies Of A Uniparental Form Of Aphytis Vandenboschi (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), A Parasite Of The San Jose Scale In Northern Utah, Manas Titayavan, Donald W. Davis
Great Basin Naturalist
The only San Jose scale parasite found at two sites in northern Utah was a uniparental form of Aphytis vandenboschi DeBach & Rosen. Parasites overwintered as pupae and were attracted to San Jose scale pheromone traps. Mature female scales were most heavily parasitized, although some prepupal males and instar II female scales were attacked. Only partial development occurred between 11.7 and 18.3 C, and fecundity was reduced between 28 and 31 C. Based on 11.7 C, 460 degree days were required in the field and 410 degree days at 26 C in the laboratory per generation. By the end of …

Rozella Pearl Beverly Blood Smith, 1911–1987, Hobart M. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
The life, activities, and contributions of an energetic, catholic woman scholar, Rozella B. Smith, are reviewed. A list of her publications is included.
Selection Of Microhabitat By The Red-Backed Vole, Clethrionomys Gapperi, Alice P. Wywialowski, Graham W. Smith
Selection Of Microhabitat By The Red-Backed Vole, Clethrionomys Gapperi, Alice P. Wywialowski, Graham W. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
Clethrionomys gapperi were captured in microhabitats with greater densities of overall cover than at noncapture or random sites within the study area. Variables describing cover density and distance from free water were selected in a discriminant function analysis to differentiate between vole capture and noncapture sites. Vole capture sites had greater amounts of cover within 4 dm above ground surface and were further from standing water than noncapture sites. The preferential use by C. gapperi of microhabitats with greater densities of cover is in agreement with laboratory and field assessments of habitat use reported in the literature.

The relationship between doctors and patients in the medical and health field is a topic of recurrent discussion today. The topic is of immense interest because of the questions raised about value received for services purchased and because of the large amount of economic resource consumed. The size of the stakes are such that the debate will grow in the near future until some solution is found to remedy the value and cost for service dilemma.

Fred Anderegg: Of Course He's On Edge, He's A Second-Story Man, Suzanne Ramljak
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Fred Anderegg's conversation is full of colorful anecdotes, which is to be expected from a gregarious archeological photographer whose job has been to take the ideal picture, in less than ideal circumstances, all over the globe.
