Utah Botanical Explorer Charles Christopher Parry (28 August 1823–20 February 1890), Stanley L. Welsh

Great Basin Naturalist

The Utah botanical contributions of Charles Christopher Parry are discussed. Especial emphasis is on his trips to Utah in 1874 and 1875. Plants taken during those years, which were subsequently listed as type-specimens, are listed. Insight is gained into this window in Utah botanical history through his letters to Dr. George Engelmann and limited correspondence from Engelmann and Joseph Ellis Johnson.

Influence Of Ponderosa Pine Overstory On Forage Quality In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Kieth E. Severson, Daniel W. Uresk Jan 1988

Influence Of Ponderosa Pine Overstory On Forage Quality In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Kieth E. Severson, Daniel W. Uresk

Great Basin Naturalist

Forage quality was assessed in pole and sapling ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) stands growing at five stocking levels—0, 5, 14, 23, and unthinned (which approximated 40 m2/ha basal area)—in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Crude protein, acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, ash, calcium, and phosphorus were evaluated for cream peavine (Lathyrus ochroleucus), bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), and timber oatgrass (Danthonia intermedia). Acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, and ash showed some significant differences among growing stock levels for cream peavine growing in sapling stands. Crude protein content of timber …

Comparison Of Regression Methods For Predicting Singleleaf Pinyon Phytomass, Robin J. Tausch, Paul T. Tueller Jan 1988

Comparison Of Regression Methods For Predicting Singleleaf Pinyon Phytomass, Robin J. Tausch, Paul T. Tueller

Great Basin Naturalist

Succession, nutrient cycling, production, and competition studies in plant communities require estimation of plant biomass. This is often accomplished by relating weight to easily measured plant dimensions via allometric equations. Dimensions of basal area and crown volume were used to predict phytomass of singleleaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla Torr. & Frem.). Two regression methods for fitting the allometric equation to data for phytomass prediction were tested. These methods were the more commonly used logarithmic transformation of both data variables followed by linear regression analysis and an iterative nonlinear analysis without data transformation. The first was consistently less effective for predicting …

Since Cumorah, Hugh Nibley Jan 1988

Since Cumorah, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

A hundred years ago, the Book of Mormon was regarded by the scholarly world as an odd text that simply did not fit their understanding of the ancient world. Since that time, however, numerous ancient records have come to light, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts.

These discoveries have forced scholars to change their views of history, and they place the Book of Mormon in a new light as well.

That is why respected Latter-day Saint scholar Hugh Nibley wrote Since Cumorah, a brilliant literary, theological, and historical evaluation of the Book of Mormon as an …

Shakespeare's Romance Of Knowing, Maurice Hunt Jan 1988

Shakespeare's Romance Of Knowing, Maurice Hunt

Quidditas

From time to time literary critics have claimed that Shakespeare's undisputed last plays—Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale, and The Tempest—are, to varying degrees, concerned with the main characters' learning experiences. These claim range, for example, from Stephen Orgel's aargument that adversity schools Alonso and Prospero in humility to Northrop Frye's assertion that education provides the means for the protagonists of the last plays to recover some sort of paradise. In other words, critics over the years have claimed in different ways that the last plays are either educational or epistemological romances. And yet no one, to my …

The Convert As A Social Type: A Critical Assessment Of The Snow-Machalek Conversion Typology As Applied To British Mormon Converts, Joy A. O'Banion Jan 1988

The Convert As A Social Type: A Critical Assessment Of The Snow-Machalek Conversion Typology As Applied To British Mormon Converts, Joy A. O'Banion

Theses and Dissertations

The study was designed to be a critical assessment of the Snow-Machalek Conversion Typology. Data were collected from Mormon converts in the British Isles, and an attempt was made to apply the typology to these converts. It was assumed that if the typology could be effectively applied to Mormon converts, strong correlations would be found between its dimensions and quantitative measures of conversion. It was also assumed that social integration of converts would play an important part in the conversion process.

The application of the typology proved to be very difficult; however, some dimensions seemed to be more useful than …

A History Of The Men's Intramural Program At Brigham Young University, David A. Brown Jan 1988

A History Of The Men's Intramural Program At Brigham Young University, David A. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compile and present an organized and complete history of the Men's Intramural Program at Brigham Young University.

The Brigham Young University Intramural Program had its beginning early in Brigham Young Academy history. The intramural program originated as an outgrowth of the physical education instructional program. Prior to 1954 the intramural program was part of the Physical Education Department and the Chairman of that department gave leadership to the intramural program by assigning part-time directors and student managers to organize sporting events. Since 1954 a full-time director has been employed as Intramural Director. The …

Natural Law And Chaucer's Physician's Tale, Jay Ruud Jan 1988

Natural Law And Chaucer's Physician's Tale, Jay Ruud

Quidditas

Of all the Canterbury Tales, the Physician's Tale may well be the least appreciated. Its subject matter is distasteful in itself–a despicable judge abuses his position of public trust and authority by deliberately setting out to obtain an innocent young virgin as an object of lust, while too frustrate the even the victim's father beheads her after cold-blooded premeditation. But if that were not enough, the tale contains at least two apparently incongruous digressions, and the storyteller appends a moral that must make the reader suspect the Narrator has not been listening to his own story. Perhaps a modern …

Mary Bardenfleth - "I Remember", Caroline Olsen, Translator

The Bridge

These are some memories of a woman whose life spanned a whole century, from 1886 to 1986. As a Danish immigrant in Minneapolis, she saw the changes in the Danish community from the time when the newcomers clung to their heritage, until today, two or three generations later when almost no one speaks in the mother tongue. Her special gift for story telling, her acting ability, and her amazing memory of poetry made her a very unusual, lovable person. Her outgoing personality and friendliness touched the lives of countless people.

The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn Jan 1988

The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn

Theses and Dissertations

Relative performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Sample Test (TOEFL-ST) was explored in sixty native English speaking high school students. Subjects also were administered the Fullerton Language Test for Adolescents and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test Revised. The TOEFL-ST was not difficult for this population, indicating that TOEFL tests taken by foreign speaking college students probably assess a level of native English competency well below the high school level. The three tests, including subtests, appear to measure a wide array of subdomains of language competency. The data do not support the conclusion that any of these …

Pronouns Of Address In The Book Of Mormon, Lyle L. Fletcher Jan 1988

Pronouns Of Address In The Book Of Mormon, Lyle L. Fletcher

Theses and Dissertations

The first section of this thesis is a diachronic examination of second person pronouns in English with special focus on variations in usage such as pronominal shifting between thou (and related forms) and ye (and related forms), as well as an examination of the second person pronoun usage in the English Bible (especially the King James Version) with a similar focus. From the thirteenth century on variations in usage have been common.

The second section is a synchronic examination of second person pronouns as used by Joseph Smith and some of his contemporaries, followed by an analysis of these pronouns …

"Hevest Up The Dore": Overcoming Obstacles To Meaning In Chaucer's Miller's Tale, David Fuller Jan 1988

"Hevest Up The Dore": Overcoming Obstacles To Meaning In Chaucer's Miller's Tale, David Fuller

Quidditas

The tantalizing obliquity E. M. W. Tillyard observes in the Miller's Tale cannot be avoided if we look beyond the popular humor and artistry of the structured plot. It is difficult to accept the Miller's joke as merely Chaucer's joke, especially when Chaucer includes frequent and indeed ambiguous references to "Goddes pryvetee" and repeated remarks that seriousness and harm have been turned into a joke.

A Document Of Humanist Education: Erasmus's Commentary On The Disticha Catonis, Louis A. Perraud Jan 1988

A Document Of Humanist Education: Erasmus's Commentary On The Disticha Catonis, Louis A. Perraud

Quidditas

The part the Disticha (or Dicta) Catonis played in Erasmus's caareer is only one event in the work's long and honorable history. The Cato was composed by an anonymous author during the later Roman principate. As presented in the oldest manuscripts, the work consists of prose sententiae followed by fouor books of hexameter couplets. The whole is ornamented with a prose preface, and the second, third, and fourth books of hexameters have verse prologues of ten, four, and four lines respectively. The "Cato" to whom the work is attributed is probably either that redoubtable critic of Roman morals, Cato …

Quantum Electrodynamics Based On Self-Fields, Without Second Quantization: A Nonrelativisitc Calculation Of G – 2, A. O. Barut, Jonathan P. Dowling, Jean F. Van Huele

Faculty Publications

Using a formulation of quantum electrodynamics that is not second quantized, but rather based on self-fields, we compute the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron to first order in the fine structure constant α. In the nonrelativistic (NR) case and in the dipole approximation, our result is ae≡(g—2)/2=(4Λ/3m)(α/2π), where Λ is a positive photon energy cutoff and m the electron mass. A reasonable choice of cutoff, Λ/m=¾, yields the correct sign and magnitude for g—2 namely, ae=+α/2π. . In our formulation the sign of a3 is correctly positive, …

Digital Neural Networks, Tony R. Martinez Jan 1988

Digital Neural Networks, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

Demands for applications requiring massive parallelism in symbolic environments have given rebirth to research in models labeled as neural networks. These models are made up of many simple nodes which are highly interconnected such that computation takes place as data flows amongst the nodes of the network. To present, most models have proposed nodes based on simple analog functions, where inputs are multiplied by weights and summed, the total then optionally being transformed by an arbitrary function at the node. Learning in these systems is accomplished by adjusting the weights on the input lines. This paper discusses the use of …

Comparison Of Effective Medium Procedures For Optical Modeling Of Laminar Structures, David D. Allred, Robert F. Edgerton Jan 1988

Comparison Of Effective Medium Procedures For Optical Modeling Of Laminar Structures, David D. Allred, Robert F. Edgerton

Faculty Publications

This study addresses the question, "How can the optical properties of matter in ultrathin amorphous nonmetallic films in multilayers best be determined from reflectance (R) and transmission (T) measurements?" A blue shift in the band gap of plasma CVD a-Si:H/a-SiNx:H multilayers was reported several years ago. It was suggested that the shift in the band gap, Eg, Relative to bulk a-Si:H as given by the Tauç plot was due to quantum confinement effects. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of various effective media theories (EMT) for determining the optical constants of materials in a multilayer and …

On The Use Of A Modified Square-Well Model For Prediction And Correlation Of Thermal Diffusion Factors In Binary Liquid Mixtures, Richard L. Rowley, S. C. Yi Dec 1987

On The Use Of A Modified Square-Well Model For Prediction And Correlation Of Thermal Diffusion Factors In Binary Liquid Mixtures, Richard L. Rowley, S. C. Yi

Faculty Publications

Recently reported thermal diffusion factors obtained from heats of transport have been used to test the ability of existing theories to predict thermal diffusivities using model parameters regressed from pure component transport data. None of the theories tested were able to provide even qualitative agreement with experiment. However, predictions using a square-well Enskog theory, modified here for consistency with normal experimental definitions, were found to be approximately correct using pure-component square-well parameters regressed from viscosity and thermal conductivity and an assumed mixing rule for cross terms. Predicted values are very sensitive to the energy mixing rule, and correlation of experimental …
