The Relationship Between Non-Native English Speakers' English Proficiency And Their Callings In The Lds Church In The United States, Dena Marie Wright Erickson Aug 1995

The Relationship Between Non-Native English Speakers' English Proficiency And Their Callings In The Lds Church In The United States, Dena Marie Wright Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

As part of BYU's Distance Learning Project to teach English for gospel purposes, a committee created a survey to assess the English needs of LDS non-native English speakers in native-language units in the United States. This thesis uses several sections of the survey to correlate proficiency, callings in the Church, and demographic information. In addition to survey data, this thesis uses qualitative information from focus groups, and interviews to illustrate the statistical findings. The theory underlying this research is that learning precedes involvement in a community. Although learning in the LDS Church community is multi-faceted, this study examines the learning …

An Integrated Framework For Learning And Reasoning, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez Aug 1995

An Integrated Framework For Learning And Reasoning, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

Learning and reasoning are both aspects of what is considered to be intelligence. Their studies within AI have been separated historically, learning being the topic of machine learning and neural networks, and reasoning falling under classical (or symbolic) AI. However, learning and reasoning are in many ways interdependent. This paper discusses the nature of some of these interdependencies and proposes a general framework called FLARE, that combines inductive learning using prior knowledge together with reasoning in a propositional setting. Several examples that test the framework are presented, including classical induction, many important reasoning protocols and two simple expert systems.

Poetic Diction And Parallel Word Pairs In The Book Of Mormon, Kevin L. Barney Jul 1995

Poetic Diction And Parallel Word Pairs In The Book Of Mormon, Kevin L. Barney

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Hebrew poetry is based on various patterns of parallelism. Parallel lines are in turn created by the use of parallel words, that is, pairs of words bearing generally synonymous or antithetic meanings. Since the 1930s, scholars have come to realize that many of these “word pairs” were used repeatedly in a formulaic fashion as the basic building blocks of different parallel lines. The Book of Mormon reflects numerous parallel structures, including synonymous parallelism, antithetic parallelism, and chiasmus. As word pairs are a function of parallelism, the presence of such parallel structures in the Book of Mormon suggests the possible presence …

Criteria For Identifying And Evaluating The Presence Of Chiasmus, John W. Welch Jul 1995

Criteria For Identifying And Evaluating The Presence Of Chiasmus, John W. Welch

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This article defines fifteen criteria one can use to measure the strength or weakness of a proposed chiastic pattern in a given text. The need for rigor in such studies depends primarily on how the results of the proposed structural analyses will be used. Ultimately, analysts may not know with certainty whether an author created inverted parallel structures intentionally or not; but by examining a text from various angles, one may assess the likelihood that an author consciously employed chiasmus to achieve specific literary purposes.

Ecology Of Celtis Reticulata In Idaho, Ann Marie Debolt, Bruce Mccune Jul 1995

Ecology Of Celtis Reticulata In Idaho, Ann Marie Debolt, Bruce Mccune

Great Basin Naturalist

The small deciduous tree Celtis reticulata (neatleaf hackberry) reaches its northern limit in Idaho, where, contrary to most of its western range, it often occurs as an overstory dominant. Two hundred fifty stands of this tree were sampled throughout Idaho. Celtis is slow-growing, averaging 4 m tall at 50 yr, and long-lived (to 300–400 yr). It occurs in a variety of habitats, from riparian to rocky uplands. Trees grow best where topographically sheltered, such as in draws and narrow canyons, and were soils are loamy. Although plants grow more slowly as surface rock cover increases, stands are often associated with …

Journal of East Asian Libraries

At present the on-line public access catalog (OPAC) still remains the primary tool for patrons searching for materials in the academic and research libraries in North America. The performance of an OPAC has a direct impact on how effectively a library provides information and services to its users. The increasing demand for information access to a wide spectrum of resources in various formats constantly challenges library professionals, library automation scientists, and library system vendors to deliver more powerful and sophisticated OPAC systems with higher performance levels at lower costs. The OPAC systems in East Asian libraries have to meet even …

Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth (Orgyia Pseudotsugata Mcdunnough) On Subalpine Fir In Northern Utah, E. Matthew Hansen Apr 1995

Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth (Orgyia Pseudotsugata Mcdunnough) On Subalpine Fir In Northern Utah, E. Matthew Hansen

Great Basin Naturalist

Douglas-fir tussock moth (Orgyia pseudotsugata McDunnough) defoliation was detected by aerial survey on three areas of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in 1990 and 1991. These are the first documented tussock moth outbreaks in Utah. Ground surveys revealed that subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa [Hook.] Nutt.) was heavily defoliated during the outbreak. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco), though minor component in the affected areas, had noticeably less defoliation and mortality. Adjacent stands of Douglas-fir had little or no visible tussock moth activity. Defoliation on subalpine fir was typically found evenly distributed throughout the crown rather than concentrated at the …

Lahontan Sagebrush (Artemisia Arbuscula Ssp. Longicaulis): A New Taxon, Alma H. Winward, E. Durant Mcarthur

Great Basin Naturalist

A new subspecies of Artemisia arbuscula is described, A. arbuscula ssp. longicaulis Winward & McArthur, ssp. nov. This taxon is a landscape dominant in portions of northwestern Nevada and adjacent California and Oregon at elevations from 1050 to 2000 m on shallow or argillic (clayey) soils. It differs from A. arbuscula ssp. arbuscula in its long floral stalks and large leaves. Morphological, chemical, ecological, and cytological data suggest that it is of hybrid origin. It is hexaploid (6x). We hypothesize that 2x A. arbusucla ssp. arbusucla and 4x A. tridentata ssp. wyomingensis are its parents.

Youth Gang Violence: Community Interventions, Dale F. Pearson Apr 1995

Youth Gang Violence: Community Interventions, Dale F. Pearson

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The rise of gang activity and crime--such as homicides, drive-by shootings, drug trafficking, burglary, and graffiti--poses a serious threat to many communities, including Utah. While juvenile homicides are relativety rare and constitute a fraction of all juvenile crime, its prevalence at all is a serious concern to parents, schools, and families in general. Some core problems which have given rise to the increase in violent gangs in society are discussed. Strategies and community interventions are recommended for this escalating social concern.
