Bombing The Sister Republic: The United States And Switzerland During World War Ii, James H. Hutson

Swiss American Historical Society Review

At 11:10 A.M., April 1, 1944, American military authorities in London received the following "strike message" from aircraft attacking a target in Europe: "392 Group bombed Last Resort with poor results at 10:50 hours. " This terse communication described the "gravest violation " of Swiss neutrality during the Second World War--in fact, during the entire twentieth century: the bombing of the city of Schafthausen by planes of the 2nd Division of the American 8th Army Air Force.

Otter: A Testbed Submersible For Robotics Research, Tim Mclain, H H. Wang, R L. Marks, S D. Fleischer, D W. Miles, G A. Sapilewski, S M. Rock, M J. Lee, R C. Burton Feb 1995

Otter: A Testbed Submersible For Robotics Research, Tim Mclain, H H. Wang, R L. Marks, S D. Fleischer, D W. Miles, G A. Sapilewski, S M. Rock, M J. Lee, R C. Burton

Faculty Publications

Untethered, unmanned submersibles (UUSs) have the potential of becoming useful tools in nuclear reactor inspection and repair and waste-site cleanup and survey, in addition to subsea exploration. Classical "hand-in-glove" control methods used currently by tethered, remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) are unsuitable for UUS systems which have, at best, limited communications. The Stanford Aerospace Robotics Laboratory (ARL) has joined with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in a program to develop new methods of controlling UUS systems.

As a part of this effort, a submersible testbed has been built to test and develop new technologies that will make UUSs useful tools …

Whipworm (Trichuris Dipodomys) Infection In Kangaroo Rats (Dipodomys Spp.): Effects On Digestive Efficiency, James C. Munger, Todd A. Slichter Jan 1995

Whipworm (Trichuris Dipodomys) Infection In Kangaroo Rats (Dipodomys Spp.): Effects On Digestive Efficiency, James C. Munger, Todd A. Slichter

Great Basin Naturalist

To determine whether infections by whipworms (Trichuris dipodomys [Nematoda: Trichurata: Trichuridae]) might affect digestive efficiency and therefore energy budgets of two species of kangaroo rats (Dipodomys microps and Dipodomys ordii [Rodentia: Heteromyidae]), we compared the apparent dry matter digestibility of tree groups of hosts: those naturally infected with whipworms, those naturally uninfected with whipworm, and those originally naturally infected but later deinfected by treatment with the anthelminthic Ivermectin. Prevalence of T. dipodomys was higher in D. microps (53%) than in D. ordii (14%). Apparent dry matter digestibility was reduced by whipworm infection in D. microps but not in …

Effects Of Salinity On Establishment Of Populus Fremontii (Cottonwood) And Tamarix Ramosissima (Saltcedar) In Southwestern United States, Patrick B. Shafroth, Jonathan M. Friedman, Lee S. Ischinger Jan 1995

Effects Of Salinity On Establishment Of Populus Fremontii (Cottonwood) And Tamarix Ramosissima (Saltcedar) In Southwestern United States, Patrick B. Shafroth, Jonathan M. Friedman, Lee S. Ischinger

Great Basin Naturalist

The exotic shrub Tamarix ramosissima (saltcedar) has replaced the native Populus fremontii (cottonwood) along many streams in southwestern United States. We used a controlled outdoor experiment to examine the influence of river salinity on germination and first year survival of P. fremontii var. wislizenii (Rio Grande cottonwood) and T. ramosissima on freshly deposited alluvial bars. We grew both species from seed in planters of sand subjected to a declining water table and solutions containing 0, 1, 3, and 5 times the concentrations of major ions in the Rio Grande at San Marcia, NM (1.2, 10.0, 25.7 and 37.4 meq 1 …

Local Distribution And Foraging Behavior Of The Spotted Bat (Euderma Maculatum) In Worthwestern Colorado And Adjacent Utah, Jay F. Storz Jan 1995

Local Distribution And Foraging Behavior Of The Spotted Bat (Euderma Maculatum) In Worthwestern Colorado And Adjacent Utah, Jay F. Storz

Great Basin Naturalist

This study investigated local distribution and foraging behavior of the spotted bat (Euderma maculatum) in Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado-Utah, by monitoring audible echolocation calls. The occurrence of this species was verified in a variety of habitat types in canyon bottoms and other relatively low elevation sites, indicating that the animals were widely distributed and locally common in the area. Foraging spotted bats concentrated flight activity in the open-air space above meadows occasionally exploited near-canopy habitat (within 8 m of foliage). Bats began to forage shortly after dark, and activity levels were relatively constant throughout the night. Foraging spotted …

The Development And Validation Of The Missionary Language Performance Test, Blair E. Bateman Jan 1995

The Development And Validation Of The Missionary Language Performance Test, Blair E. Bateman

Theses and Dissertations

Performance tests are an effective way of assessing examinees' ability to perform specific job-related tasks. This thesis details the development and validation of a performance test designed to measure LDS missionaries' ability to perform missionary tasks in a foreign language, the Missionary Language Performance Test (MLPT).

The development of the test involved identifying a set of relevant missionary tasks, specifying the criteria to be evaluated, designing test items, devising a procedure for sampling tasks and for administering and rating the test, and training raters to administer the test. Three separate studies were conducted to validate the test: (a) both the …

The Pentagon Papers, Mike Gartner Jan 1995

The Pentagon Papers, Mike Gartner

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The case New York Times Co. v. United States was a landmark case that involved the right of a free press and the fundamental First Amendment rights of the American People. What follows is an exploration into this case and how it reached the Supreme Court. First we will examine a brief history of what became to be known as the "Pentagon Papers" and finally look into each decision reached in the federal courts, and of course the decision of the Supreme Court.
