Distributional Information On Birds From Egg Sets Collected By Henry Rogers Durkee In 1870 In Southwestern Wyoming, Douglas B. Mcnair, James P. Dean

Western North American Naturalist

Henry Rogers Durkee collected 74 egg sets of 27 avian species in 1870 at Gilmer, Uinta County, in southwestern Wyoming. Despite the paucity of documented breeding evidence from this region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his material at the Smithsonian Institution was generally overlooked and has never been critically examined. Durkee's egg sets included 5 species (Sandhill Crane, Grus candensis; Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Stelgidoteryx serripennis; Grasshopper Sparrow, Ammodramus savannarum; Fox Sparrow, Passerella iliaca; Cassin's Finch, Carpodacus cassinii) whose breeding distribution was then poorly known, 25 to more than 70 years before nests …

Breeding Populations Of Swainson's Hawks, Red-Tailed Hawks, And Golden Eagles In North Central Oregon: 1975–1982 And 1999, Stewart W. Janes Aug 2003

Breeding Populations Of Swainson's Hawks, Red-Tailed Hawks, And Golden Eagles In North Central Oregon: 1975–1982 And 1999, Stewart W. Janes

Western North American Naturalist

Populations of breeding Swainson's Hawks (Buteo swainsoni), Red-tailed Hawks (B. jamaicensis), and Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) present in 1999 were compared with populations present between 1975 and 1982 at a 129-km2 site in north central Oregon. Populations of Red-tailed Hawks and Golden Eagles remained unchanged, but the number of Swainson's Hawks pairs increased from 15 to 17. In 1999 Golden Eagles used nests occupied between 1975 and 1982, and 7 of 31 pairs of Red-tailed Hawks used nests occupied in earlier years. No Swainson's Hawks nested in trees occupied earlier. Few changes in …

Estimates Of The Incidence Of Mistletoes In Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Coconino National Forest, Arizona, Carolyn M. Daugherty, Robert L. Mathiasen Aug 2003

Estimates Of The Incidence Of Mistletoes In Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Coconino National Forest, Arizona, Carolyn M. Daugherty, Robert L. Mathiasen

Western North American Naturalist

The relative incidence of mistletoes found in pinyon-juniper woodlands is estimated for the Coconino National Forest, Arizona, using a roadside survey. Approximately 50% of the pinyon-juniper woodlands surveyed were infested with juniper mistletoes (Phoradendron juniperinum or P. capitellatum). In contrast, only about 12% of the areas surveyed were infested with pinyon dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium divaricatum). In these infested woodlands, 70% with juniper mistletoes and 44% with pinyon dwarf mistletoe were lightly infested. Most areas where pinyon dwarf mistletoe populations were observed (90%) also had juniper mistletoe (P. juniperinum) present, but many juniper mistletoe populations …

The Rise And Fall Of Programmed Instruction: Informing Instructional Technologists Through A Study Of The Past, Jason K. Mcdonald Aug 2003

The Rise And Fall Of Programmed Instruction: Informing Instructional Technologists Through A Study Of The Past, Jason K. Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

Instructional technologists have recently been called upon to examine the assumptions they hold about teaching and learning, and to consider how those assumptions can affect their practice of the discipline. This thesis is an examination of how the assumptions instructional technologists hold can result in instructional materials that do not accomplish the original goals the developers set out to achieve. I explored this issue by examining the case study of programmed instruction, an educational movement from the mid-20th century that promised to revolutionize education but never lived up to its potential. Programmed instruction was heavily influenced by the assumptions of …

Word Pairs And Distinctive Combinations In The Book Of Mormon, James T. Duke Jul 2003

Word Pairs And Distinctive Combinations In The Book Of Mormon, James T. Duke

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The literary richness of the Book of Mormon is attested by the appearance of word pairs, in both parallel and conjoined pairs. On occasion, combinations of three, four, or even more words appear together more than once. Possible reasons for the scriptural use of word pairs include literary functions, echoes of the law of Moses, theological terms, universals (or merisms), repetition, and mnemonic function. Duke builds on previous studies of word pairs in the Book of Mormon by Kevin Barney and John Tvedtnes. The frequency of word pairs and other combinations of words witnesses to the Hebrew roots of the …

A Conversation With Robert J. Matthews, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Robert J. Matthews was influenced by the Book of Mormon to pursue his studies of the Joseph Smith Translation. He was intrigued by what the Book of Mormon said about the Bible. To further one’s understanding of the Book of Mormon, Matthews recommends further study on the Near East and an analysis of the internal structure of the book. Royal Skousen’s work on the comparative text, Hugh Nibley’s Book of Mormon writings, and articles in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism on the Book of Mormon are sources for increasing one’s knowledge of that book.

T-Splines And T-Nurccs, Thomas W. Sederberg, Jianmin Zheng, Almaz Bakenov, Ahmad Nasri

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a generalization of non-uniform B-spline surfaces called T-splines. T-spline control grids permit T-junctions, so lines of control points need not traverse the entire control grid. T-splines support many valuable operations within a consistent framework, such as local refinement, and the merging of several B-spline surfaces that have different knot vectors into a single gap-free model. The paper focuses on T-splines of degree three, which are C2 (in the absence of multiple knots). T-NURCCs (Non-Uniform Rational Catmull-Clark Surfaces with T-junctions) are a superset of both T-splines and Catmull-Clark surfaces. Thus, a modeling program for T-NURCCs can handle any …

"How, Kemosabe": Rowland Rider's Symbol For All Seasons, Deirdre M. Paulsen

BYU Studies

"How, Kemosabe," Rowland Rider would say, raising his right arm. Unlike a schoolboy raising his hand to ask a question, Rowland would lift his arm up from the elbow. This gesture was Rowland's trademark of sorts, a declaration to the world of his knowledge of Indian ways. (Rowland said "Indian." The politically correct term Native American had not yet been advanced.) After all, Rowland, my grandfather, was the only white man in Kanab, Utah, who could skin a deer the way the Navajos liked it done. I can't remember if it was with or without the ears. But it mattered …

Polar Sea Ice Mapping For Seawinds, Hyrum Spencer Anderson May 2003

Polar Sea Ice Mapping For Seawinds, Hyrum Spencer Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the scientific community has expressed interest in the ability to observe global climate indicators such as polar sea ice. Advances in microwave remote sensing technology have allowed a large-scale and detailed study of sea ice characteristics. This thesis provides the analysis and development of sea ice mapping algorithms for the SeaWinds scatterometer. First, an in-depth analysis of the Remund Long (RL) algorithm for SeaWinds is performed. From this study, several improvements are made to the RL algorithm which enhance its performance. In addition, a new method for automated polar sea ice mapping is developed for the SeaWinds …

Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands In Zion National Park, Utah, Kimball T. Harper, Stewart C. Sanderson, E. Durant Mcarthur Apr 2003

Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands In Zion National Park, Utah, Kimball T. Harper, Stewart C. Sanderson, E. Durant Mcarthur

Western North American Naturalist

Juniperus osteosperma–Pinus monophylla or P. edulis (P-J) woodlands are the most widespread plant community in Zion National Park (ZNP), southwestern Utah. These woodlands dominate nearly half of the park's land area. Our study of this vegetational complex is based on a sample consisting of 115 macroplots (each 0.01 ha in area) objectively distributed across the entire area of ZNP. We recognize 3 subtypes within the P-J complex: Juniperus osteosperma(Utah juniper) alone, juniper with P. monophylla (single-leaf pinyon), and juniper with P. edulis (two-leaf pinyon). The 2 pinyon pines rarely occur together, and thus the foregoing subtypes do not overlap …

Changes In The Distribution And Status Of Sage-Grouse In Utah, Jeffrey L. Beck, Dean L. Mitchell, Brian D. Maxfield

Western North American Naturalist

Sage-grouse (Centrocercus spp.) were abundant in all of Utah's 29 counties at the time of European settlement wherever sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) occurred. Greater Sage-Grouse (C. urophasianus) inhabited areas north and west of the Colorado River, and Gunnison Sage-Grouse (C. minimus) occupied suitable habitat south and east of the Colorado River. The largest Greater Sage-Grouse populations in Utah are currently restricted to suitable habitats in Box Elder, Garfield, Rich, Uintah, and Wayne Counties. A remnant breeding population of Gunnison Sage-Grouse occurs in eastern San Juan County. We stratified Greater Sage-Grouse populations (1971–2000) by counties where …

Genetically Effective And Adult Population Sizes In The Apache Silverspot Butterfly, Speyeria Nokomis Apacheana (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), Hugh B. Britten, Erica Fleishman, George T. Austin, Dennis D. Murphy

Western North American Naturalist

Genetically effective and adult population sizes of the Apache silverspot butterfly (Speyeria nokomiis apacheana) from the Great Basin of North America were tracked from 1991 to 1997. Speyeria nokomis inhabits mesic habitats in the Great Basin, and its recent declines in abundance have raised concerns about its future persistence. Adult population size estimates determined from mark-recapture methods ranged from 100 to 1900 individuals from 1993 through 1997. Genetically effective population sizes based on temporal changes in allozyme frequencies ranged from less tha 1 individual to 20 individuals between 1991 and 1995. Despite these small annual estimates, it is …

Burrowing Owl Nest Success And Burrow Longevity In North Central Oregon, Aaron L. Holmes, Gregory A. Green, Russell L. Morgan, Kent B. Livezey Apr 2003

Burrowing Owl Nest Success And Burrow Longevity In North Central Oregon, Aaron L. Holmes, Gregory A. Green, Russell L. Morgan, Kent B. Livezey

Western North American Naturalist

We studied nest success, burrow longevity, and rates of burrow reuse for a migratory population of Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) in north central Oregon from 1995 to 1997. Nest success varied annually from 50% to 67%. Principal causes of nest failure were desertion (26%) and depredation by badgers (Taxidea taxus; 13%). Reuse of available nest and satellite burrows in subsequent years was 87% in 1996 and 57% in 1997. Reuse was highest at burrows in sandy soils, which may indicate that nest-site availability is a limiting factor in sandier soil types. Trampling by livestock resulted in …

Evidence For Survival Of Pleistocene Climatic Changes In Northern Refugia By The Land Snail Trochoidea Geyeri, David Posada, Markus Pfenninger, Frederic Magnin Apr 2003

Evidence For Survival Of Pleistocene Climatic Changes In Northern Refugia By The Land Snail Trochoidea Geyeri, David Posada, Markus Pfenninger, Frederic Magnin

Faculty Publications

The study of organisms with restricted dispersal abilities and presence in the fossil record is particularly adequate to understand the impact of climate changes on the distribution and genetic structure of species. Trochoidea geyeri (Soos 1926) is a land snail restricted to a patchy, insular distribution in Germany and France. Fossil evidence suggests that current populations of T. geyeri are relicts of a much more widespread distribution during more favourable climatic periods in the Pleistocene. Results: Phylogeographic analysis of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA and nuclear ITS-1 sequence variation was used to infer the history of the remnant populations of T. …

Freedom Of Choice And Hypnotic Communication In Psychotherapy And Public Address, Richard German Ellsworth Apr 2003

Freedom Of Choice And Hypnotic Communication In Psychotherapy And Public Address, Richard German Ellsworth

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Historical, theoretical and methodological aspects of clinical hypnosis relevant to free agency are reviewed, including therapeutic hypnotic communication techniques used by effective public speakers. Hypnosis is defined as specific techniques to capture and hold someone's attention, and is herein considered as simply a more sophisticated method of communication " which some effective public speakers and therapists do naturally, but which with study of these effective communication forms, therapists and speakers may learn to do with greater facility. Methods of applying specific hynotic techniques to enhance the efficacy of psychotherapy and public address are demonstrated, including indirect suggestion, rapport, presupposition, embedded …

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls Apr 2003

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses a current debate over the universality of ideophones, a class of expressions that are used to simulate, through performative foregrounding, the salient processes and perceptions of everyday life experience. Using data from Quechua-speaking Runa in Amazonian Ecuador, I argue for a view of ideophones as a type of cultural discourse through which speakers align themselves with nonhuman life forms and forces of nature. This alignment is suggested by the special performative properties of ideophones, which collapse the distinction between a speech event and a narrated event, thus compelling a speaker to become an action, event, or process, …

When I picked up David's paper to read it, I had a pencil in my hand. Years of reading my students' and my own papers made it natural to edit as I read. However, I heard in my mind the voice of my mother advising me to put the pencil down. This wasn't time to edit but to hear and understand. Still, I kept the pencil in my hand for the first few pages and made a few notes before I put it down and just read. I could hear David's voice speaking the words I read. It was good …

The Word Of God, Leslie A. Taylor Jan 2003

The Word Of God, Leslie A. Taylor

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The term word of God is used in rich and varied ways in the Book of Mormon. The word of God is of great worth and is clearly identified with Christ, or the Logos. The word of God is often portrayed as a two-edged sword, is associated with creation and power, provides both comfort and discomfort, is nourishing and enlightening, and plays a role in the last days. The fundamental characteristics of the word of God are constant throughout scripture.

Fire Effects On Small Mammal Communities In Dinosaur National Monument, Richard A. Olson, Barry L. Perryman, Stephen Petersburg, Tamara Naumann Jan 2003

Fire Effects On Small Mammal Communities In Dinosaur National Monument, Richard A. Olson, Barry L. Perryman, Stephen Petersburg, Tamara Naumann

Western North American Naturalist

Resource specialists at Dinosaur National Monument utilize both planned and unplanned wildland ignitions in big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata)–dominated plant communities to restore successional processes, maintain vegetation vigor, and promote diversified landscapes. Short- and long-term effects of prescribed burning on small mammal populations are not well understood. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare small mammal species richness, similarity, and diversity between paired burned and unburned treatment plots, and (2) assess long-term trends of small mammal community responses to burning. Five paired burned/unburned sites having similar vegetation, soils, elevation, and annual precipitation were selected. Prescribed or natural …

Laboratory Fattening And Dietary-Fat Effects On Meadow Voles (Microtus Pennsylvanicus), Edward T. Unangst Jr., Bruce A. Wunder Jan 2003

Laboratory Fattening And Dietary-Fat Effects On Meadow Voles (Microtus Pennsylvanicus), Edward T. Unangst Jr., Bruce A. Wunder

Western North American Naturalist

When removed from the field and maintained under laboratory conditions, meadow voles exhibited significant change in body composition. Voles increased body mass due primarily to large gains in lipid mass combined with small losses in fat-free mass. Lipid deposition amounts increased as dietary fat was increased, and animals demonstrated a leveling of body mass instead of continuous unregulated obesity. When dietary fat content was changed, lipid deposition or utilization responded directly. Thus, meadow voles regulate overall body mass and body composition (lipid and fat-free mass) at levels that correspond to dietary quality (fat) and abundance in the laboratory, and they …
