Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen
Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen
The Bridge
Before emigrating in August 1965, I had already experienced America while a child living in Denmark. My first American memory is the smell of Wrigley's Doublement gum. I also remember the green gum package containing the thin, shiny silver paper with the jagged edge you had to remove in order to touch the delectable candy. For me, as a child, chewing gum was America. I was born in Vangede in 1940, the year the Germans invaded Denmark. During much of the five-year Nazi Occupation, our family lived in Sydhavnen, in Copenhagen, on Sjcel0r Boulevard number 3, in a onebedroom apartment. …
Redesigning The Teacher Education Technology Course To Emphasize Integration, Charles R. Graham, Richard Culatta, Mitchell Pratt, Richard West
Redesigning The Teacher Education Technology Course To Emphasize Integration, Charles R. Graham, Richard Culatta, Mitchell Pratt, Richard West
Faculty Publications
Teacher education programs in the United States are trying to equip tomorrow’s teachers with the technology skills needed to impact learning in the classroom. During the past decade there has been a realization that teaching technology skills alone is not adequate– pre-service teachers must also learn how to integrate the use of technology into their curriculum. This paper describes BYU’s instructional technology course and the design process that a team of instructors went through to redesign the course in order to put greater emphasis on technology integration. An iterative redesign approach was used. Several iterations of the course redesign will …
“So That The Nations May Become Genuine Indian”: Nativism And Leslie Marmon Silko’S Ceremony, Dennis Cutchins
“So That The Nations May Become Genuine Indian”: Nativism And Leslie Marmon Silko’S Ceremony, Dennis Cutchins
Faculty Publications
Leslie Marmon Silko’s (mixed-blood Laguna Pueblo) Ceremony is a powerful novel that tells the story of Tayo, a mixed-blood Pueblo war veteran who returns to Laguna mentally crippled by his wartime experiences. As Tayo struggles to overcome the alienation his military service has created, he must also face the shame of his own mixed heritage. His suffering eventually leads him off the pueblo to a Navajo healer, Betonie, who helps Tayo create a new historical paradigm based on Navajo and Laguna mythology. Betonie’s fictional re-vision of history is, perhaps, the novel’s most important accomplishment. Through Betonie, Silko creates an alternative …
Population Structure And Paternity In An American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus) Population Using Microsatellite Dna, Elizabeth A. Sinclair, Hal L. Black, Keith A. Crandall
Population Structure And Paternity In An American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus) Population Using Microsatellite Dna, Elizabeth A. Sinclair, Hal L. Black, Keith A. Crandall
Western North American Naturalist
We report genetic microsatellite data from analysis of 71 American black bears (Ursus americanus) from the East Tavaputs Plateau in eastern Utah. Heterozygosity was 52.9%, which is lower than other mainland North American populations and possibly reflects low recruitment into the study area. We used a combination of known pedigrees (mother/cubs), relatedness estimates, and paternity estimation using CERVUS to infer single and possible multiple paternity within litters, breeding by pairs over consecutive years, and the possibility of a single male successfully breeding with multiple females in a single year. Estimates of inbreeding effective population size indicate the East …
Beaver Herbivory Of Willow Under Two Flow Regimes: A Comparative Study On The Green And Yampa Rivers, Stewart W. Breck, Kenneth R. Wilson, Douglas C. Andersen
Beaver Herbivory Of Willow Under Two Flow Regimes: A Comparative Study On The Green And Yampa Rivers, Stewart W. Breck, Kenneth R. Wilson, Douglas C. Andersen
Western North American Naturalist
The effect of flow regulation on plant-herbivore ecology has received very little attention, despite the fact that flow regulation can alter both plant and animal abundance and environmental factors that mediate interactions between them. To determine how regulated flows have impacted beaver (Castor Canadensis) and sandbar willow (Salix exigua) ecology, we first quantified the abundance and mapped the spatial distribution of sandbar willow on alluvial sections of the flow-regulated Green River and free-flowing Yampa River in northwestern Colorado. We then established 16 and 15 plots (1 m x 2.7 m) in patches of willow on the …

Plant Invasions In Protected Areas At Multiple Scales: Linaria Vulgaris (Scrophulariaceae) In The West Yellowstone Area, Aníbal Pauchard, Paul B. Alaback, Eric G. Edlund
Western North American Naturalist
Invasive alien plants have long been recognized as a threat to low-elevation, disturbed environments, but the case of Linaria vulgaris Mill. in Yellowstone National Park and Gallatin National Forest shows that invasions can also spread to high-elevation natural reserves. Because invasions in protected areas are a product of complex processes occurring over a broad range of scales, we argue that a multi-scale research approach is needed to capture both patterns and potential mechanisms of the invasion process. Mapping L. vulgaris at the landscape scale, we found the species occupying a broad range of sites, apparently originating from just 2 historical …

Nesting And Brood-Rearing Characteristics Of Chukars In West Central Idaho, Andrew J. Lindbloom, Kerry P. Reese, Peter Zager
Western North American Naturalist
We analyzed attributes from 23 nests (10 renests) and 46 brood locations of radio-marked Chukars (Alectoris chukar) in the lower Salmon River canyon of west central Idaho in 1995 and 1996. Nesting effort was 100%, apparent nest success was 45%, and estimated time from destruction or abandonment of a nest to initiation of laying a subsequent nest averaged 13 ± 5 days sx. Average clutch size for 1st nests (14.5 ± 1.0) was greater (P = 0.017) than renests (10.4 ± 1.1). Cover types used by nesting Chukars included grass/forb (48% of nests), rock (43%), …

Habitat Features And Predictive Habitat Modeling For The Colorado Chipmunk In Southern New Mexico, Marina Rivieccio, Bruce C. Thompson, William R. Gould, Kenneth G. Boykin
Western North American Naturalist
Two subspecies of Colorado chipmunk (state threatened and federal species of concern) occur in southern New MeXico: Tamias quadrivittatus australis in the Organ Mountains and T. q. oscuraensis in the Oscura Mountains. We developed a GIS model of potentially suitable habitat based on vegetation and elevation features, evaluated site classifications of the GIS model, and determined vegetation and terrain features associated with chipmunk occurrence. We compared GIS model classifications with actual vegetation and elevation features measured at 37 sites. At 60 sites we measured 18 habitat variables regarding slope, aspect, tree species, shrub species, and ground cover. We used logistic …

Identifying those seniors most likely to adopt a healthy diet, the relative importance they place on certain perceived benefits associated with a healthy diet, and whether these perceived benefits are associated with selected demographic, lifestyle, and health history variables is important for directing effective dietary health promotion programs. Methods: Analyses are based on a cross-sectional convenience sample of 670 seniors aged 50 years and older at the 2002 World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. Data are assessed using frequencies, bivariate analysis, analysis of variance, and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results Fruit and vegetable consumption was significantly higher in individuals …
Review Essay: Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs, Editor And Translator, Swiss Sisters Separated. Pioneer Life In Kansas, Oklahoma, And Washington 1889-1914. From The Letters Of Louise Guillermin Dupertuis To Her Sister Elise Guillermin, The Painter, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This work of nearly 500 pages presents a rich harvest of documents, data, and insights, derived from Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs' painstaking and expert effort as editor, translator, and interpreter. He first offers a concise introduction concerning the letters which had been exchanged mainly between Louise Guillermin Dupertuis (1848-1914), an 1889 immigrant to Kansas, and also some of her children, with Elise ( 1851-1931) and Isa line (b. 1841) Guillermin, the sisters of the book's title. Despite Louise's frequent entreaties, Elise stayed in Crettaz-Tavex sur Ollon in the Swiss canton of Vaud in whose studio the editor discovered their copious correspondence …

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll
Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll
Theses and Dissertations
Excavations at a high altitude archaeological site (3350 m) in the eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, uncovered at least three ephemeral brush structures. These temporary timberline dwellings are the highest structures excavated in Utah to date. The periods of occupation range from the early Fremont period to the post-contact era. It is believed that the Fremont occupations are logistical in nature, possibly representing male hunting parties. Logistical camps imply a departure from, and return to, a residential camp. Ethnographic studies show that most residential camps are located within proximity to culinary plants to facilitate collection by women. In the Uinta Mountains, …

Dispersal Of Sagebrush-Steppe Seeds By The Western Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis), John F. Mull
Dispersal Of Sagebrush-Steppe Seeds By The Western Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis), John F. Mull
Western North American Naturalist
Like many seed-harvesting ants, the western harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis) can act as both a predator and a seed disperser. Dispersal results when seeds are dropped en route to the nest, are left in nest granaries when colonies die or are abandoned, or are removed from granaries and discarded in nest middens. This study examined the density and species identity of seeds discarded in harvester ant nest middens and compared them with those found in nearby soils. Nineteen species of seeds were recovered from middens, compared with 13 species in 5-m reference areas and 9 species in adjacent …
Geobotany Of The Niobrara Chalk Barrens In Colorado: A Study Of Edaphic Endemism, Sylvia Kelso, Nathan W. Bower, Kirsten E. Heckmann, Paul M. Beardsley, Darren G. Greve
Geobotany Of The Niobrara Chalk Barrens In Colorado: A Study Of Edaphic Endemism, Sylvia Kelso, Nathan W. Bower, Kirsten E. Heckmann, Paul M. Beardsley, Darren G. Greve
Western North American Naturalist
The chalk barrens of the Niobrara Formation in the Arkansas River valley of Colorado exhibit a high degree of plant endemism and rarity. We examined their geochemistry and structure as well as the reproductive ecology of their signature species Mirabilis rotundifolius to assess factors influencing endemism. While no single component consistently identified the barren soils, the natural locations that support Mirablilis can be identified using elemental profiles from a cluster analysis of soil extracts. Because seeds germinate and plants proliferate in transplant gardens with non-calcic soils, bedrock and soil chemistry do not appear to be determinant components of endemism. Mirabilis …

Insect-Mediated Pollination In Slickspot Peppergrass, Lepidium Papilliferum L. (Brassicaceae), And Its Implications For Population Viability, Ian C. Robertson, Danielle Klemash
Western North American Naturalist
Field experiments on the pollination biology of slickspot peppergrass, Lepidium papilliferum L. (Brassicaceae), a rare species endemic to microsites in sagebrush-steppe habitat in southwestern Idaho, were conducted at 2 sites from May to July 2001. Site KB contained over 10,000 plants, whereas site WG contained less than 150 plants. Insect exclusion experiments revealed that seed production in L. papilliferum is dependent on insect-mediated pollination; median percent seed set dropped from 70% to 2% when insects were excluded from flowers. A total of 25 insect families from 5 orders visited L. papilliferum flowers: 24 families at KB and 11 families at …
Assortative Mating In Insects: Sexual Selection Vs. Sampling Artifact, Ruth Bernstein, Stephen Bernstein
Assortative Mating In Insects: Sexual Selection Vs. Sampling Artifact, Ruth Bernstein, Stephen Bernstein
Western North American Naturalist
In this report we analyze patterns of size-assortative mating in an insect genus by (1) describing the consistency and strength of assortative mating among populations of a species and among species of a genus, and (2) determining the role of sampling artifacts in generating this nonrandom pattern of mating. Our data consist of 18 samples of soldier beetles (8 species of the genus Chauliognathus) from 17 sites within the southwestern United States. Of the 18 samples, just 6 exhibited significant correlations between elytron lengths of mating pairs. We show how these and other significant correlations are generated by 3 …
