The Neon Gods We Made, Max Funk Apr 2017

The Neon Gods We Made, Max Funk

Honors Projects

The Neon Gods We Made is a collection of 3 plays and 21 poems. In this collection I explore the concept of religion as an ideology, or as a body of knowledge that has some specific function in society as a whole—while I focus primarily on culture of the United States, there are broader trends in the use of ideology that are applicable to other countries/cultures as well. With this project, I am primarily interested in the links between organized religion, personal spirituality, and the influence of culture on both the more formal and informal aspects of one’s spirituality. Primarily, …

Repeat After Me: Dance Program Evaluation For The Friendship Circle, Michelle Sire

Honors Projects

Approximately 1 in 6 children in the United States are diagnosed with one or more developmental disabilities or delays (Boyle et al., 2011). Although the number of therapeutic approaches for children with developmental disabilities has increased, no single treatment or combination of treatments is effective in relieving symptoms for all individuals (Scharoun, Reinders, Bryden & Fletcher, 2014). Therefore, there is a need to continue to explore alternative therapeutic methods. Research over the past twenty years has found dance/movement therapy (DMT) to be an effective form of treatment for children with special needs, specifically in terms of functioning and well-being. However, …

Identity Performance: African-Caribbean Artists As Creators Of Cultural Community, Jessica Allison Feb 2017

Identity Performance: African-Caribbean Artists As Creators Of Cultural Community, Jessica Allison

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Identity performance is an aspect of everyday life and can be seen in an individual's daily routines, or even the way they present themselves in specific social situations. These performances of identity can also be displayed in the actions one puts in to a piece of art. In African-Caribbean societies artists have become aware of the importance identity holds for their community and many of them put these ideas in to their artwork. The conscious decisions that these artists make in the creation and display of their artworks act as performances of an identity that they are attempting to convey. …

Dancing Through Life: Dance As Physical Therapy To Prevent Falls, Salon Gegel

Honors Projects

The basis of this project was to create a series of dance-based exercise activities to be used as part of an exercise class for elderly people who are classified as fall risks. The idea was to approach exercise through a medium that was convenient and versatile for the class leader, while being comfortable and fun for participants. Participants met four times to take part in a guided exercise class, and enjoy other activities. At these sessions, participants were …

Examining A First Grader’S Writing Through A Habermasian Lens: Implications For The Teaching And Learning Of Writing, Cheu-Jey Lee Jan 2017

Examining A First Grader’S Writing Through A Habermasian Lens: Implications For The Teaching And Learning Of Writing, Cheu-Jey Lee

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper investigates the relationship between Habermas’s theory of communicative action (TCA) and writing. It begins with a review of the features of Habermas’s TCA: validity claims, their corresponding criteria, and the ideal speech situation. Then TCA is applied in analyzing a first grader’s written notes. Finally, the implications for the teaching and learning of writing are discussed from a Habermasian perspective. This paper demonstrates the applicability of Habermas’s TCA in examining writing. It also shows how TCA informs the teaching and learning of writing.

"I Have Shakespeare In My Blood": Reading Intervention With Middle School Boys, Leah Guenther Jan 2017

"I Have Shakespeare In My Blood": Reading Intervention With Middle School Boys, Leah Guenther

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This research investigates the impact of teaching Shakespeare to below-grade-level readers in an English Language Arts classroom on Chicago’s South Side. The students studied are five middle school boys who were observed over a two-year course of study under the same teacher who, after finding success with this method, found herself asking, how is it that underperforming readers were able to make their way into such complicated text? In fact, by the end of the two years, all were reading at or far above grade level. The study argues that focusing on students’ strengths, teacher choice, and using the classics, …
