A Psychological Skills Handbook For Competitive Anxiety In Gymnasts, Kayla Bates Jan 2023

A Psychological Skills Handbook For Competitive Anxiety In Gymnasts, Kayla Bates

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

The relationship between competitive anxiety and performance has been explained by many authors and researchers. Competitive anxiety can have either a negative or positive effect on performance depending on the athlete’s interpretation of their symptoms. Specifically, the Cusp Catastrophe Model aimed to explain the relationship between physiological arousal and cognitive anxiety, and how these two factors affect performance. Psychological skills training may be used to help train the mind of athletes to decrease competitive anxiety levels and/or reinterpret anxiety symptoms to enhance performance. Gymnastics is a high-skill sport that puts a great amount of stress on the mind and body …

Fostering Reading: Supporting Foster Children Through Virtual Learning, Evette Harrell, Leah Washburn-Moses Jan 2023

Fostering Reading: Supporting Foster Children Through Virtual Learning, Evette Harrell, Leah Washburn-Moses

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Professional literature presents evidence that foster care agencies, foster parents, and educators are unprepared to meet the distinctive educational needs of foster youth. Although there is a general lack of evidence on specific interventions developed for foster youth, some studies have addressed the impact of tutoring. This paper studies the impact of a pilot program that paired 15 teacher candidates with 15 foster youth for virtual reading tutoring as part of a college course. Data were collected from youth, parents, and teacher candidates through surveys and focus groups. The results of this study suggested that the tutoring relationship produced several …

Publishing In A Peer-Reviewed Journal, Sherri Lyn Horner, Christy Galletta Horner Jan 2023

Publishing In A Peer-Reviewed Journal, Sherri Lyn Horner, Christy Galletta Horner

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In our first installment of a series of short articles, we focus on demystifying the publishing process. We first review terminology that is important for authors to understand yet is not clearly defined in easily accessible ways. Then, we describe the publishing process, beginning with preparing and submitting a manuscript, and ending with either publication or a recommendation to submit to another outlet. We provide a visual flowchart to illustrate the steps and multiple pathways in this process. Finally, we present the advice we collected from eight individuals involved in the publication process at MWER: the two current editors and …

All Means All … Maybe: Mtss Policy And Practice Across States In The United States, Aimee Howley, Darcey M. Allan, Nora L. Howley, Tanis Furst

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Across the United States, State Education Agencies (SEAs) are using tiered strategies, such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) frameworks, to ensure that all students, including diverse learners, receive equal, high-quality education. However, little is known about the extent to which SEAs are encouraging use of MTSS to address the needs of students with moderate-to-severe cognitive disabilities. The present study aimed to examine how SEAs conceptualize and support the implementation of MTSS as an approach to inclusionary education. Data were collected through interviews with key informants in SEAs across 19 states. Members of the research team identified and coded portions …

Household Food Insecurity And Student Behavior: The Impact Of One School's Second Breakfast Program, Bradley S. Witzel, Elizabeth Wall-Bassett

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Household Food Insecurity (HFI) is a frequent challenge for children living in poverty that impacts social, emotional, and behavioral development. Federally assisted meal programs, such as the National School Breakfast Program, address HFI for students living in poverty through free or reduced-price breakfast. However, there are challenges for students to take advantage of this opportunity, and it is underutilized. In this research, all middle school students at a high poverty school were offered a free of charge meal alternative called Second Chance Breakfast. Since this program was started, student participation in school breakfast increased and behavior incidences in school dropped …

Tinder Usage On Bgsu Campus: A Collection Of Interviews, Autumn Zeller

Honors Projects

The purpose of the study is to explore the mental effects Tinder has on Bowling Green State University students. My project explores in-depth interviews of 8 BGSU students, and their usage of the popular dating app Tinder. Dating apps have become very popular since the creation of Tinder in 2012, and research explores the negative self-esteem effects it can cause. My research found that many people use the app simply because they are bored, and stray away from trying for something serious because of the stereotypes attached to the app. I also found that women tend to become more critical …

The Symbolic Politics Of Same-Sex Marriage Legalization, Kaden Sinning Dec 2022

The Symbolic Politics Of Same-Sex Marriage Legalization, Kaden Sinning

Honors Projects

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, many commentators highlighted increasing resistance to the ruling. Some observed typical public backlash, but others noted targeted LGBTQ rights bills from state legislators. While much of the scholarly literature suggests that public backlash is short-lived and tends to resolve toward Supreme Court doctrine, less clear is the impact of state legislative efforts following judicial decisions. To help clarify this discrepancy, this research examines the effect of Obergefell on state bill proposals. I argue that Obergefell acts as a trigger for state legislators to …

Practice Habits Among Collegiate Music Majors: Relationships With Everyday Self-Regulatory Behaviors, Lydia Stricker Dec 2022

Practice Habits Among Collegiate Music Majors: Relationships With Everyday Self-Regulatory Behaviors, Lydia Stricker

Honors Projects

This study examined self-regulatory behaviors among collegiate musicians. In the fall of 2022, a total of 73 participants from a large midwestern university responded to an online questionnaire soliciting information regarding self-regulatory behaviors both in and outside of the classroom. Items were adapted from the Carey, Neal and Collins Short Self-Regulation Questionnaire (2004). Findings support previous research suggesting a strong, positive relationship between everyday self-regulatory behaviors and those demonstrated in the practice room. Implications include a discussion on the possibility of transferring self-regulation strategies from one domain to the other.

The Economics Of Altruism: An Exploration Of Self And Collective Identity, Catherine Krempasky Dec 2022

The Economics Of Altruism: An Exploration Of Self And Collective Identity, Catherine Krempasky

Honors Projects

There is a belief that students in college often pursue an undergraduate business degree due to the money that comes with the industry. Whereas students pursuing an undergraduate degree in health and human services are believed to be more altruistic, pursuing jobs such as social work, nursing, criminal justice, and other careers that give back to communities despite their often lower-than-average salaries. While this difference in altruism is a common belief, it has rarely been a proven one. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the difference in altruism between students from the Schmidthorst College of Business and the College of …

Conceptual Framework, Derrick Manns, Bob D. Lee, David L. Groves

Visions in Leisure and Business

Resilience is an elusive concept and has many definitions. Most definitions are based upon position regarding achieving normalcy, advancement beyond normalcy, or anticipation of future positions. The definition that was used for this study includes the following elements: (The initial research was conducted by Mallak (1998). Goal Directed, Avoidance, Critical Understanding, Role Dependence, Information Sources, and Resource Access. This represents a transitional position and provides an ability to analyze problems and prescribe solutions for both the individual as well as the organization. It provides a framework for in depth understanding for future action, if such a pandemic happens again. It …

Covid Segmentation: Important Variables And Their Relationship To Resilience, Derrick Manns, Bob D. Lee, David L. Groves Dec 2022

Covid Segmentation: Important Variables And Their Relationship To Resilience, Derrick Manns, Bob D. Lee, David L. Groves

Visions in Leisure and Business

Most of the data about the virus views it from a holistic perspective. It must be realized that the data must be segmented. In review of content on the internet and publications, a four COVID category system was developed: Impaired Illness to Death, Bad, Mild to Little or No Effect, No problem. Once these categories were identified the important variables in each of these categories were investigated. These variables were then related to the various dimensions of resilience. This type of information is needed in strategic planning and the development of programs for future crises.

A Ruff Day On The Road: How Relocation Affects Children Pre-K Through Third Grade And How A Picture Book Can Help, Bryant Miller Nov 2022

A Ruff Day On The Road: How Relocation Affects Children Pre-K Through Third Grade And How A Picture Book Can Help, Bryant Miller

Honors Projects

Moving their home from across town, a couple of states away, or overseas is something most will experience at least once in their lifetime. For all, moving is a big change, but for children, it can have lasting effects. Presumably, social skills, academic development, and family dynamics are all impacted when children move. But how and to what length are these factors influenced? This led to the original research question, how does relocation affect children and how can this transition during relocation be eased? After the first portion of the research was done to answer these questions, the research then …

Policing For Peace: Training For A 21st Century Police Force, Kate M. Den Houter, Margaret E. Brooks Nov 2022

Policing For Peace: Training For A 21st Century Police Force, Kate M. Den Houter, Margaret E. Brooks

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

We review the present state of research on police training in the United States, highlighting gaps in the literature, and limitations of trainings in use by local policing agencies. We focus on training content relevant to the volatile situations that are at the center of controversy, we evaluate content areas that focus on successfully navigating real-time, unpredictable, and potentially dangerous interactions, and discuss training needs in these areas. We suggest that one common response to the issue of bias—implicit bias training—lacks evidence of efficacy. Accordingly, we recommend alternative training content to address bias and discrimination. Finally, we call attention to …

What Can Go Wrong When Everything Is Right? Using Organizational Justice To Understand Police Misconduct And Improve Personnel Systems, Antoine D. Busby, Meghan A. Thornton-Lugo, Laura Parker, Nicole Strah Nov 2022

What Can Go Wrong When Everything Is Right? Using Organizational Justice To Understand Police Misconduct And Improve Personnel Systems, Antoine D. Busby, Meghan A. Thornton-Lugo, Laura Parker, Nicole Strah

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Despite decades of attention paid to police reform, cases of office misconduct still continue to plague policing organizations. Assuming that organizations may still experience such officer malfeasance even when attempting to pursue best practices, we aim to explore how things can go wrong when everything else seems right. Specifically, we rely on trickle-down models of organizational justice, group engagement, and social identity to articulate how otherwise desirable organizational outcomes may produce detrimental outgroup biases. Based on our theoretical premise, we articulate specific changes that may be made to personnel systems that can avoid such officer misconduct in policing contexts.

Electing Law Enforcement Leadership: Examining The Effects Of Politics And Job-Related Qualifications On Personnel Assessment And Decisions For Sheriff, Kareem Panton, Kevin P. Nolan, Jess Rigos Nov 2022

Electing Law Enforcement Leadership: Examining The Effects Of Politics And Job-Related Qualifications On Personnel Assessment And Decisions For Sheriff, Kareem Panton, Kevin P. Nolan, Jess Rigos

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Calls for police reform have become frequent in the United States. Efforts to enact meaningful organizational change will require support from senior law enforcement leadership. Personnel selection for several of these positions (e.g., Sheriff) occurs via local election. Little is known, however, about the factors that influence voters’ assessment of candidates for these positions and the extent to which decision-making for personnel selection via election is influenced by the same beliefs (e.g., person-job and person-organization fit) as more traditional approaches to hiring. This study explores the extent to which voters’ perceptions of two candidates for the position of Sheriff are …

Enhancing The Representation Of Women: How Gender Diversity Signals And Acknowledgement Affect Attraction To Men-Dominated Professions, Thomas P. Depatie, Anmol Sachdeva, Comila Shahani-Denning, Rebecca Grossman, Kevin P. Nolan Nov 2022

Enhancing The Representation Of Women: How Gender Diversity Signals And Acknowledgement Affect Attraction To Men-Dominated Professions, Thomas P. Depatie, Anmol Sachdeva, Comila Shahani-Denning, Rebecca Grossman, Kevin P. Nolan

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

While organizations around the world recognize the importance of gender diversity and inclusion, many struggle to reach gender parity (Sneader & Yee, 2020). Particularly, women account for less than 15% of all sworn police officers (Donohue Jr, 2020). Considering signaling theory and novel research in organizational impression management, we examined the utility of various recruitment messaging techniques for attracting women job seekers to professions dominated by men, at both a consulting firm and law enforcement agency. Women evaluating consulting firm materials perceived greater behavioral integrity and were subsequently more attracted to the organization if recruitment messages included both high gender …

Exploring The Feasibility Of Assessing Cultural Competence In Police Officers, Sydney L. Reichin, Alexander T. Jackson, Mark C. Frame, Michael Hein Nov 2022

Exploring The Feasibility Of Assessing Cultural Competence In Police Officers, Sydney L. Reichin, Alexander T. Jackson, Mark C. Frame, Michael Hein

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Pathology, personality, and integrity-related construct assessments have been widely used in the selection of police officers. However, the incidence of police brutality and misconduct is still concerning. The present study explored the feasibility of the assessment of cultural competence in police officers. We explored the extent to which the change to the agency’s first ever Black CEO would affect cultural competence of the officers as well as incidence of misconduct. Results showed that scores on a cultural competence factor of an in-basket simulation used for promotional assessments at a state highway patrol agency were not predictive of either supervisor-rated performance …

Using Workplace Personality To Guide Improvement Of Law Enforcement Selection, Chase A. Winterberg, Michael A. Tapia, Bradley J. Brummel Nov 2022

Using Workplace Personality To Guide Improvement Of Law Enforcement Selection, Chase A. Winterberg, Michael A. Tapia, Bradley J. Brummel

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Recurrent police-public conflict suggests misalignment in desired police behavior between police and the public. We explored differences in desired police characteristics between police and members of the American public. Although racial minorities endorsed more negative attitudes of police overall, we found no meaningful differences in desired police characteristics between police and the public or between racial minority and majority participants. Second, we combined multiple criterion-related validation studies in similar jobs via meta-analyses and synthetic validity analyses to identify personality predictors of police performance dimensions. Third, we assessed base rates and adverse impact of these personality characteristics in police. Incumbent officers …

Introduction To The Special Issue On Policing: Examining The Role Of Testing And Assessment, Dennis Doverspike, Alexandra Petruzzelli, Marc Cubrich

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Prepared in response to the weight and seriousness of social concerns with regard to the state and future of policing, this special issue was developed in order to feature research that examined a wide range of personnel and assessment decisions relating to policing. The focus was broad in scope, welcoming conceptual/theoretical papers, quantitative or qualitative reviews, empirical papers, and think pieces. To address the questions and areas identified in the initial call for papers, six articles are presented covering the themes of individual differences in personnel selection group composition and macro-level influences on policing, and practical recommendations and the future …

Children’S Views On Playtime In Schools: A Systematic Literature Review, Thomas Clements, Emma L. Harding Dr Nov 2022

Children’S Views On Playtime In Schools: A Systematic Literature Review, Thomas Clements, Emma L. Harding Dr

International Journal of Playwork Practice

Background and aim(s)

Playtime in schools has been shown to have wide-ranging benefits to children and young people. However, opportunities for playtime in schools have declined over time. It is important children’s voices are heard on matters that are important to them, yet playtime is often driven by adult policy. The aim of this systematic literature review (SLR) was to explore children’s views on playtime to further our understanding of what is important to them, and what affects their access to playtime.

Methodology

This SLR employed thematic synthesis to aggregate the views of children on playtime. This review includes 8 …
