Heparin is a common anticoagulant used in hospitals that has been found to promote the interaction of human factor IXa with Anti-Thrombin III, creating a [IXa-ATIII] complex when put through electrophoresis. Protamine Sulfate has been found to inhibit such interactions. Therefore, this project will entail the use of four different human factors that are commonly found in the blood cascading system, Human Factors IXa, Xa, XIa, and IIa, to observe their interaction with Anti-Thrombin III. These human factors will be used in correspondence with two polyamines, Spermine and Spermidine, to see if these polyamines act more like Heparin and promote …

Helping Disconnected College Students Find Their Niche: Implementing A Peer Ambassador Program On Co, David Denison

For my Honors Project, I developed and implemented the Peer Ambassador Program for BGSU's Counseling Center. The Peer Ambassador Program was designed to help disconnected students heighten their involvement in the campus community. Generally, this program serves as a complement to students’ regular counseling. The Peer Ambassador meets individually with students in the Counseling Center after receiving a referral from a staff counselor. The Peer Ambassador Program not only serves Counseling Center clients; it also provides a valuable internship opportunity to undergraduate psychology students.

Grand Lake St. Marys in Northwest Ohio provides the towns of St. Marys and Celina with recreational uses, tourism dollars and most importantly serves as the main water supply for town of Celina. However lake eutrophication has resulted in numerous chronic blooms of a toxic cyanobacterium, Planktothrix sp. As a result, tests are being done to see whether conditions can be manipulated so that the toxic cyanobacterium can be replaced by a more benign algal community dominated by diatoms. Father’S Contributions To Housework And Childcare And Parental Aggravation Among First-Time Parents, Alfred Demaris, Annette Mahoney, Kenneth A. Pargament

This study investigated the associations between fathers’ contributions to housework and childcare and both spouses’ parenting aggravation. It was hypothesized that greater father contributions to domestic labor would be associated with more paternal aggravation but less maternal aggravation. Data are from a four-wave study of 178 married couples undergoing the transition to first parenthood. Dyadic growth-curve models revealed gender differences in aggravation trajectories over the first year of the child’s life. Fathers were higher in initial aggravation but mothers’ aggravation grew at a faster rate over time. The primary hypothesis was only partially supported. The study will focus on the ability of students to retain information over the course of a year. We will do this by surveying 8th grade students, on material they were to have learned the previous year in the Social Studies content area. In order to understand how this retention process works, we will investigate how certain demographics, which the students fit into, will affect the outcome for that student's ability to succeed in the classroom. Our hypothesis is that there are at least one to two of these demographic categories that will affect a student’s ability, either positively or …

Waikiki Public Bath Force Main Replacement Project consists of 1,037 m of 400 mm force main that carries the wastewater from the Public Bath pump station to a gravity sewer on the Kuhio Avenue. This force main transports wastewater underneath Kalakaua Ave, very close to some of the most expensive real state in the world. Many biological electron-transfer reactions involve short-lived tryptophan radicals as key reactive intermediates. While these species are difficult to investigate, the recent photogeneration of a long-lived neutral tryptophan radical in two Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin mutants (Az48W and ReAz108W) made it possible to characterize the electronic, vibrational, and magnetic properties of such species and their sensitivity to the molecular environment. Indeed, in Az48W the radical is embedded in the hydrophobic core while, in ReAz108W it is solvent-exposed. Here we use density functional theory and multiconfigurational perturbation theory to construct quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics models of Az48W* and ReAz108W* capable of reproducing specific features of their …

Oxidative damage to purine nucleic acid bases proceeds through quinoidal intermediates derived from their corresponding 8-oxo-7,8-dihydropurine bases. Oxidation studies of 8-oxo-7,8-dihyroadenosine and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroinosine indicate that these quinoidal species can produce stable cross links with a wide variety of nucleophiles in the 2-positions of the purines. An azide precursor for the adenosine iminoquinone has been synthesized and applied in ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopic studies. Thus, the adenosine iminoquinone can be observed directly, and its susceptibility to nudeophilic attack with various nucleophiles as well as the stability of the resulting cross linked species have been evaluated Finally, these observations indicate that this …

In 1971, W. David Slawson estimated that 99% of all contracts do not resemble the Platonic ideal of a document of jointly negotiated terms, but rather are lists of terms presented by one party to the other on a pre-printed form.2 Although this estimate is forty years old, it underestimates our cur-rent market exchange situation; the pervasiveness of form contracts stipulat-ed by one party has increased.3 Contract law generally provides for the enforcement of such contracts, allowing the powerful party to essentially govern over consumers and weaker parties.4 Classical contract theory allows for this enforcement of contracts based upon a …

Single-Cell Imaging And Spectroscopic Analyses Of Cr(Vi) Reduction On The Surface Of Bacterial Cells, Yuanmin Wang, Papatya C. Sevinc, Sara M. Belchik, Jim Fredrickson, Liang Shi, H. Peter Lu

We investigate the single-cell reduction of toxic Cr(VI) by the dissimilatory metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1), an important bioremediation process, using Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Our experiments indicate that the toxic, highly soluble Cr(VI) can be efficiently reduced to less toxic, nonsoluble Cr2O3 nanoparticles by MR-1. Cr2O3 is observed to emerge as nanoparticles adsorbed on the cell surface and its chemical nature is identified by EDX imaging and Raman spectroscopy. Co-localization of Cr2O3 and cytochromes by EDX imaging and Raman spectroscopy suggests a terminal reductase role for MR-1 surface-exposed cytochromes …

Genetics is a rapidly expanding field that encompasses a variety of disciplines, especially within the health care field. Since the advent of the Human Genome Project, the abilities of genetic research has greatly increased, allowing us to create genetic tests that can search many genes and find mutations indicating disease or risk for future diseases or disorders. The widespread use of genetic testing has necessitated more genetic counseling to assist in explaining and returning test results to patients and their families.
