The Effect Of Visual Wulst Lesions And Trigeminal Nerve Sectioning On The Discrimination Of Magnetic Inclination In The Homing Pigeon (Columba Livia), Merissa Acerbi

Honors Projects

The ability of homing pigeons to return to their loft from unknown places has fascinated scientists for centuries. It is well established that homing pigeons, like migratory birds, posses an innate magnetic inclination compass to determine direction by measuring the angle between the magnetic field vector and the Earth's surface. Recent work has indicated that the avian magnetic compass is light mediated and appears to mediate magnetic information to the brain. This occurs via a visual pathway with processing in the visual Wulst area of the forebrain. There is, however, also evidence from other avian species that magnetic direction may …

On Membership, Humility, And Pedagogical Responsibilities: A Correspondence On The Work Of Wendell Berry, Rebecca A. Martusewicz, Jeff Edmundson, Richard Kahn

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Wendell Berry is a novelist, essayist, conservation activist and farmer who has had a lot to say over the last half century about the impact of modern industrial society on small farm communities and the land especially since WWII. In this three-way conversation, the authors take up central aspects of Berry’s work to think about how it has influenced their thinking as teacher educators focused on the intersections between social and ecological crises challenging our world. Themes of responsibility, leadership, community membership, friendship, “settler colonialism,” racism, land use, and ecological sustainability are brought to bear on education for just and …

Conical Intersection And Potential Energy Surface Features Of A Model Retinal Chromophore: Comparison Of Eom-Cc And Multireference Methods, Samer Gozem, Anna I. Krylov, Massimo Olivucci

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This work investigates the performance of equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (EOM-CC) methods for describing the changes in the potential energy surfaces of the penta-2,4-dieniminium cation, a reduced model of the retinal chromophore of visual pigments, due to dynamical electron correlation effects. The ground-state wave function of this model includes charge-transfer and diradical configurations whose weights vary along different displacements and are rapidly changing at the conical intersection between the ground and the first excited states, making the shape of the potential energy surface sensitive to a balanced description of nondynamical and dynamical correlation. Recently, variational (MRCISD) and perturbative (MRPT2) approaches for including …

A New Method For Identifying Stem-Like Cells In Esophageal Cancer Cell Lines, Michael Eric Geusz, Taghreed N. Almanaa, Roudabeh J. Jamasbi

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) appear to resist chemo-radiotherapy and initiate tumor recurrence in patients. Isolation and further characterization of this subpopulation is important for targeting CSCs. Flow cytometry using Aldefluor, a fluorescent substrate of aldehyde dehydrogenase, has been used to isolate CSCs from various cancer cell lines. However, newtechniques are needed to locate and identify CSCs in culture for live-cell analyses such as fluorescence microscopy without introducing artifacts during cell sorting and to observe CSC and non-CSC interactions. Previously, we characterized a distinct CSC subpopulation within human esophageal cancer cell lines (ESCC). In this study we introduce the attached-cell Aldefluor …

Dynamic Diatom Response To Changing Climate 0-1.2 Ma At Lake El'gygytgyn, Far East Russian Arctic, Jeffrey Allan Snyder, M. V. Cheraponova, A. Bryan

School of Earth, Environment and Society Faculty Publications

The Lake El' gygytgyn sediment record contains an abundant diatom flora through most intervals of the lake's history, providing a means to create and test hypotheses concerning the lake's response to changing climates. The 0 1.2 Ma core interval is characterized by shifts in the dominant planktonic genera and events of exceptional concentration and diversity. Warm interglacial intervals have enhanced concentration and diversity of the plankton. This response is most extreme during exceptional events corresponding to marine isotope stages (MIS) 11 and 31. Diatom concentration and diversity also increase during some cold intervals (e.g., MIS 2), suggesting conditions of lake …

Inequity Aversion: Do Rats Get Jealous?, Hannah Douglas

Honors Projects

It is well known that humans have the capacity to prefer certain rewards over others. This idea has been studied in animals and is considered the relative reward processing theory. Research conducted on primates and rodents have found that they form an opinion on, and behave according to the relative magnitude of a reward compared to others (Cromwell, Hasani, & Schultz, 2005; Onge, Chiu, & Floresco, 2010). It is also accepted experience the emotion of jealousy in response to many different situations including uneven reward payoff. It has been theorized that some nonhuman animals including primates and domestic dogs are …

Different Immersion Temperature's Impact Upon Blood Pressure Of Individuals With Varied Sex And Age, Kasee Hildenbrand, Celestina Barbosa-Leiker, Daniel Melchior

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Warm water immersion is known to have an effect on human cardiovascular function. This study examines how age (young = 18-30 years and older = 31-65 years) and sex influence changes in blood pressure due to submersion in different water temperatures. Fifty-eight individuals sat immersed to the neck in three different water temperature tanks. Blood pressure measurements (systolic/diastolic blood pressure [SBP/DBP], pulse pressure [PP] and heart rate [HR]) were collected every 6 minutes throughout the duration of the test. We observed significant between-group, within-group, and interaction effects for SBP, DBP, and HR. For PP, significant between-group, within-in group and interaction …

Liposome Encapsulation Of A Photochemical No Precursor For Controlled Nitric Oxide Release And Simultaneous Fluorescence Imaging, Alexis D. Ostrowski, Brian F. Lin, Matthew V. Tirrell, Peter C. Ford Oct 2012

Liposome Encapsulation Of A Photochemical No Precursor For Controlled Nitric Oxide Release And Simultaneous Fluorescence Imaging, Alexis D. Ostrowski, Brian F. Lin, Matthew V. Tirrell, Peter C. Ford

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Described are photochemical studies of the nitric oxide precursors, trans-Cr(L)(ONO)(2)(+) (L = cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, CrONO, or L = mac = 5,7-dimethyl-6-anthracenylcyclam, mac-CrONO) encapsulated in phosphatidylcholine liposomes. The liposomes provide a means to maintain a localized high concentration of NO releasing complexes and are easily modified for in vivo targeting through self-assembly. Steady, controlled release of NO is seen after photolysis of the liposome-encapsulated CrONO as compared to the burst of NO release seen by the unencapsulated complex in oxygenated solutions. The quantum yields for photochemical NO release from liposome-encapsulated CrONO and mac-CrONO were determined in both oxygenated and anoxic …
