Recently, a rhodopsin protein mimic was constructed by combining mutants of the cellular retinoic acid binding protein II (CRABPII) with an all-trans retinal chromophore. Here, we present a combine computational quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) and experimental ultrafast kinetic study of CRABPII. We employ the QM/MM models to study the absorption (lambda(a)(max)), fluorescence (lambda(f)(max)), and reactivity of a CRABPII triple mutant incorporating the all-trans protonated chromophore (PSB-KLE-CRABPII). We also study the spectroscopy of the same mutant incorporating the unprotonated chromophore and of another double mutant incorporating the neutral unbound retinal molecule held inside the pocket. Colleges and Universities across America are integrating “green†initiatives and environmentally focused programs into campus policy. Community gardens provide an example of one method that institutions are utilizing in an effort to showcase their commitment towards sustainability. This report focuses on establishing a framework that may be utilized in order to create a successful community gardening program at Bowling Green State University (located in Bowling Green, Ohio). Past community gardening programs at Bowling Green State University are analyzed in this study to determine how prior community gardening programs at the University disbanded. Approaches For Beach Safety And Education In Ghana: A Case Study For Developing Countries With A Surf Coast, Cara E. Hammerton, Robert W. Brander, Nicholas Dawe, Craig Riddington, Roger Engel

Beach drowning in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC’S) like the west African nation of Ghana, is a poorly understood problem. A physical site assessment of the Ghana coast was undertaken to determine beach types, hazards, and the potential for implementing community surf education and lifeguarding services. A questionnaire survey was administered to 346 participants in coastal regions providing information related to beach drowning. Results demonstrated that a significant number of drownings occur on this wave-dominated coastline, particularly on public holidays, with 82% of participants knowing someone who had drowned. Neurocognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, is considered to be the world’s fastest growing disease (Alzheimer's Association, 2011). Due to this escalation, research focused on determining causes, accelerants, impeding factors, and preventative strategies has become a focus of interest within the field. One of the principal points of study is the role that exercise plays in the maintenance or fortification against neurocognitive decline. Though there is a robust library of research focused on the effects of land-based exercise on cognitive function, currently there is no research that discusses the impact of aquatic-based exercise on these parameters. …

Controlled Formation Of Emissive Silver Nanoclusters Using Rationally Designed Metal-Binding Proteins, Vasily A. Morozov, Michael Y. Ogawa

The metal-binding properties of rationally designed, synthetic proteins were used to prepare a series of emissive silver nanoclusters having predictable sizes and emission energies. Metal-binding a-helical coiled coils were designed to exist as peptide trimers, tetramers, and hexamers and found to uniquely bind 6, 8, and 12 Ag+ ions, respectively. Subsequent treatment with a chemical reducing agent produced a series of peptide-bound Ag-0 nanoclusters that display a strong visible fluorescence whose emission energies depend on the number of bound metal ions in excellent agreement with theory.

Lake Vostok, the 7th largest (by volume) and 4th deepest lake on Earth, is covered by more than 3,700 m of ice, making it the largest subglacial lake known. The combination of cold, heat (from possible hydrothermal activity), pressure (from the overriding glacier), limited nutrients and complete darkness presents extreme challenges to life. Here, we report metagenomic/metatranscriptomic sequence analyses from four accretion ice sections from the Vostok 5G ice core. Two sections accreted in the vicinity of an embayment on the southwestern end of the lake, and the other two represented part of the southern main basin. We obtained 3,507 …

The intuitive hypothesis that Construction Management Professionals (CMP) must have a high level of people skills implies that they should be different than the population at large in terms of people skills. In addition, estimators do not deal with as many people as project managers; therefore, they may not have/need as high of people skills as project managers. This paper tests these hypotheses through the analysis of 47 personality traits of 102 experienced applicants for construction management positions and compares this analysis to the traits of the overall population. A supramolecular sensor array consisting of eight chemosensors embedded in a hydrogel matrix was used to sense carboxylate drugs. The discriminatory power of the array has been evaluated using principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis. The eight-member sensor array has been shown to accurately identify 14 carboxylates in water with 100% classification accuracy. To demonstrate the potential for practical utility in the physiological environment, analysis of carboxylate drugs in human urine was also performed achieving 100% correct classification. In addition, the array performance in semiquantitative identification of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs has been investigated, and the results show that the …

The connection between mathematics skills and chemistry course success was examined by analyzing data from Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) software initial assessment for CHEM 1250, General Chemistry I, and final course grades from fall of 2009 and 2011. These years were chosen to evaluate the effect of a mathematics prerequisite of MATH 1220, College Algebra II. In 2011, after the prerequisite was in place, students had mastered significantly more of the mathematics topics on the initial ALEKS assessment, but there was not a significant change in final course grade.

Invasive aquatic species of plants have caused great harm to Great Lakes ecosystems by limiting habitat availability and altering community structure. Flowering Rush (Butomus umbellatus L.) is an invasive currently threatening Lake Erie wetlands. The aim of this study is to understand the response of B. umbellatus to an experiment designed to simulate the management techniques of flooding and clipping. Plants collected from Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge were subjected to six combinations of clipping and flooding treatments in controlled mesocosms in a greenhouse. Because shell-shock is a term specific to World War I but describes a condition which remains today, this paper sets the context for studying the British experience of shell-shock by carefully explaining what modern psychology says regarding PTSD and examining a few select texts by Wilfred Owen to demonstrate the psychological concepts in historic pieces. A historical comparison is made between the modern understanding of PTSD and the historic understanding of shell-shock as set forth in the Freudian paradigm between 1914 and 1920. This project interviewed 4 initially undecided major students who now have declared majors in a focus group setting to determine their feelings of satisfaction and success. The study has three major findings. First, students felt their initial undecided status allowed more flexible course selection and resulted in a more well-rounded education. Second, while students liked this greater flexibility, students felt after declaring a major, they constantly played “catch up†to graduate on time and to receive career internships.
