Analysis Of A Sponge Bioherm From The Hermosa Group, Molas Lake Area, Colorado, Joanna Hamilton Jan 2014

Analysis Of A Sponge Bioherm From The Hermosa Group, Molas Lake Area, Colorado, Joanna Hamilton

Honors Projects

The Hermosa Group is a Pennsylvanian (~310 Ma) rock package found in the southwestern San Juan Mountains and the Paradox Basin. The Paradox Basin was an evaporite basin in which alternating carbonate, sandstone and siltstone layers were deposited at the margins. Within the carbonate layers, ancient phylloid algal mounds and sponge bioherms can be found. In this project I document fossil sponges and algae from a Hermosa Group locality in southwestern Colorado. I look at the environments in which the sponges lived, those being relatively deep water, above wave-base; as well as inter-sponge growth habits, where one is dominant and …

The Effects Of Anxiety On Sensory Gating, Jonathon Meier Jan 2014

The Effects Of Anxiety On Sensory Gating, Jonathon Meier

Honors Projects

Sensory gating is a proposed important physiological process of inhibiting neuronal responses of repetitious stimuli in the central nervous system to allocate more cognitive resources to additional salient information. Sensory gating is currently being studied to better understand psychiatric illnesses, especially those characterized by emotional changes and the inability to concentrate such as schizophrenia, ADHD, anxiety disorder, and Parkinson’s. Anxiety is a strong feeling of nervousness that occurs in all individuals at varying degrees and is associated with detrimental health effects as well as hindering concentration. Numerous brain regions are associated with anxiety levels such as the anterior limbic system, …

Water As A Trophic Currency In Dryland Food Webs, Daniel C. Allen, Kevin E. Mccluney, Stephen R. Elser, John L. Sabo Dec 2013

Water As A Trophic Currency In Dryland Food Webs, Daniel C. Allen, Kevin E. Mccluney, Stephen R. Elser, John L. Sabo

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Water is essential for life on Earth, yet little is known about how water acts as a trophic currency, a unit of value in determining species interactions in terrestrial food webs. We tested the relative importance of groundwater and surface water in riparian food webs by manipulating their availability in dryland floodplains. Primary consumers (crickets) increased in abundance in response to added surface water and groundwater (contained in moist leaves), and predators (spiders and lizards) increased in abundance in response to added surface water, in spite of the presence of a river, an abundant water source. Moreover, the relative magnitude …

Designing Critical Thinking Based Lesson In Social Studies Education, Kathleen Adelblue Dec 2013

Designing Critical Thinking Based Lesson In Social Studies Education, Kathleen Adelblue

Honors Projects

This paper explains the importance of integrating critical thinking and analysis skills into social studies curriculum. It is designed to show teachers how the process of planning and assessing are essential when considering how to implement the instruction of these skills. I start by explaining how to plan lessons so that they align with skills-based objectives and incorporates the state standards. Then, I outline ways to create lessons focused on developing critical thinking and analysis skills. Because assessment is such an important piece of lesson planning and implementation, the paper has a section dedicated strictly to this topic. It explains …

Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy Dec 2013

Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy

Honors Projects

Commercial manufacturing and widespread use of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in the United States has left lasting negative effects today. These persistent contaminants continue to bioaccumulate in the food web because of their stable structure, long half-life, and high lipophilicity. Adding PCB to the diet of Sprague-Dawley rats during pregnancy and lactation alters the thyroid status of offspring, and the behavior of the dams and pups. To determine a critical period or “window” of development with the greatest impact of PCB exposure of females on offspring fitness, female Sprague-Dawley rats were mated and fed PCB diet (25 ppm PCB 47 and …

Exercise Intensity And Wound Healing In Diabetic Mice, Amber Wolfe Dec 2013

Exercise Intensity And Wound Healing In Diabetic Mice, Amber Wolfe

Honors Projects

Along with the increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the United States comes an increase in the health consequences of elevated blood glucose levels, including delayed wound healing. Exercise has been demonstrated to advance wound healing; however in terms of wounds in diabetics, it is not known what intensity of exercise will have the most positive effects. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of low- and high-intensity exercise on patterns of wound healing in diabetic mice.

The Functionality Of The Tonb System Across The Transduction Pathway, Lindsey Marie Butterfield Dec 2013

The Functionality Of The Tonb System Across The Transduction Pathway, Lindsey Marie Butterfield

Honors Projects

The transport process at the outer membrane of gram negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, is influenced by the TonB protein. The TonB protein energizes transport trough specific outer membrane proteins that are involved in iron uptake. It does this by using the energy that is collected from the ion electrochemical gradient of the cytoplasmic membrane, by complexes of ExbB and ExbD proteins. The functions of this system involve a set of poorly understood interactions between TonB, ExbB, ExbD, and the outer membrane transporters. Modifying the amino terminus of ExbB produces a drastic effect that is seen during energy transduction for transport …

5-Azido-2-Aminopyridine, A New Nitrene/Nitrenium Ion Photoaffinity Labeling Agent That Exhibits Reversible Intersystem Crossing Between Singlet And Triplet Nitrenes, Maxim S. Panov, Valentyna D. Voskresenska, Mikhail N. Ryazantsev, Alexander N. Tarnovsky, R. Marshall Wilson

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The photochemistry of a new photoaffinity labeling (PAL) agent, 5-azido-2-(N,N-diethylamino)pyridine, was studied in aprotic and protic solvents using femtosecond-to-microsecond transient absorption and product analysis, in conjunction with ab initio multiconfigurational and multireference quantum chemical calculations. The excited singlet SI state is spectroscopically dark, whereas photoexcitation to higher-lying singlet excited S-2 and S-3 states drives the photochemical reaction toward a barrierless ultrafast relaxation path via two conical intersections to S-1, where N-2 elimination leads to the formation of the closed-shell singlet nitrene. The singlet nitrene undergoes intersystem crossing (ISC) to the triplet nitrene in aprotic and protic solvents as well as …

Probing Vibrationally Mediated Ultrafast Excited-State Reaction Dynamics With Multireference (Caspt2) Trajectories, Patrick Z. El-Khoury, Saju Joseph, Igor Schapiro, Samer Gozem, Massimo Olivucci, Alexander N. Tarnovsky Nov 2013

Probing Vibrationally Mediated Ultrafast Excited-State Reaction Dynamics With Multireference (Caspt2) Trajectories, Patrick Z. El-Khoury, Saju Joseph, Igor Schapiro, Samer Gozem, Massimo Olivucci, Alexander N. Tarnovsky

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Excited-state trajectories computed at the complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) reveal how vibrational excitation controls the molecular approach to the intersection space that drives the photodissociation of a prototypical halogenated methyl radical, namely CF2I. Translating the Franck-Condon structure along the ground-state CASPT2 vibrational modes in this system followed by propagating the displaced structures in the first excited doublet state simulates specific vibrational excitations and vibrationally mediated dynamics, respectively. Three distinct situations are encountered: the trajectories (i) converge to an energetically flat segment of the intersection space, (ii) locate a segment of the intersection space, and (iii) access a …

Filopodia As Sensors, Carol A. Heckman, H. K. Plummer Nov 2013

Filopodia As Sensors, Carol A. Heckman, H. K. Plummer

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Filopodia are sensors on both excitable and non-excitable cells. The sensing function is well documented in neurons and blood vessels of adult animals and is obvious during dorsal closure in embryonic development. Nerve cells extend neurites in a bidirectional fashion with growth cones at the tips where filopodia are concentrated. Their sensing of environmental cues underpins the axon's ability to "guide," bypassing non-target cells and moving toward the target to be innervated. This review focuses on the role of filopodia structure and dynamics in the detection of environmental cues, including both the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the surfaces of neighboring …

Suspended Lipid Bilayer For Optical And Electrical Measurements Of Single Ion Channel Proteins, Suneth P. Rajapaksha, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu Oct 2013

Suspended Lipid Bilayer For Optical And Electrical Measurements Of Single Ion Channel Proteins, Suneth P. Rajapaksha, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Making and holding an artificial lipid bilayer horizontally in an aqueous solution within the microscopic working distance of similar to 100 mu m are essential for simultaneous single molecule imaging and single ion-channel electrical current recording. However, preparation of such a lipid bilayer without a solid support is technically challenging. In a typical supported lipid bilayer, the asymmetric local environments and the strong perturbation of the underneath solid or dense surface can diverge the normal behavior of membrane proteins and lipids. On the other hand, the suspended lipid bilayers can provide a native local environment for the membrane proteins and …
