Water Availability Directly Determines Per Capita Consumption At Two Trophic Levels, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo Jan 2009

Water Availability Directly Determines Per Capita Consumption At Two Trophic Levels, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Community ecology has long focused on energy and nutrients as currencies of species interactions. Evidence from physiological ecology and recent studies suggest that in terrestrial systems, water may influence animal behavior and global patterns of species richness. Despite these observations, water has received little attention as a currency directly influencing animal species interactions. Here, we show that the per capita interaction strength between predatory wolf spiders and their primary prey, field crickets, is strong (0.266) when predators and prey are maintained in ambient dry conditions, but is near zero (0.001) when water is provided ad libitum. Moreover, crickets consume 31-fold …

Isolation Of Fungi From Lake Vostok Accretion Ice, Scott O. Rogers, Tom D'Elia, Ram Veerapaneni, Vincent Theraisnathan Jan 2009

Isolation Of Fungi From Lake Vostok Accretion Ice, Scott O. Rogers, Tom D'Elia, Ram Veerapaneni, Vincent Theraisnathan

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Here we report the characterization of fungi from 10 accretion ice sections (3300-5100 y old) as well as two deep glacial ice sections that are close to the bottom of the glacier (1 000 000-2 000 000 y old) from the Vostok, Antarctica, 5G ice core. Fungi were characterized by fluorescence microscopy culturing and sequence analyses of ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacers. A total of 270 fungal colonies were cultured from the accretion ice of subglacial Lake Vostok and an additional 14 from the glacial ice immediately above the accretion ice. Mean concentrations were 0-4.42 cells mL-1 ice meltwater of …

Anion Binding Modes In Meso-Substituted Hexapyrrolic Calix[4]Pyrrole Isomers, Kai-Chi Chang, Tsuyoshi Minami, Petr Koutnik, Pavel Y. Savechenkov, Yuanli Liu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Jan 2009

Anion Binding Modes In Meso-Substituted Hexapyrrolic Calix[4]Pyrrole Isomers, Kai-Chi Chang, Tsuyoshi Minami, Petr Koutnik, Pavel Y. Savechenkov, Yuanli Liu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We report on the synthesis of a new receptor for anions, meso-substituted hexapyrrolic calix[4]pyrrole 1. The calix[4]pyrrole's core features two additional pyrrole side-arms suspended above or below the calix[4]pyrrole core. This hexapyrrolic calix[4]pyrrole 1 is formed as cis- and trans-configurational isomers, the structures of which have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The anion binding experiments revealed interesting difference in the binding mode: The cis-1 isomer binds anions in a mixed binding mode featuring a combination of hydrogen bonding and anion-pi interactions resulting in an unexpected strong binding. On the other hand, the trans-1 isomer displays only hydrogen bonding …

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú Jan 2009

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú

History Faculty Publications

The article examines how adverse climatic conditions and high food prices influenced the opportunities of peasants in pre-industrial Mexico between 1730 and 1835. Particular attention is paid to data of soldier heights, global climate events, warm-season tree growth, and real food prices to determine how these factors may have affected urban and rural populations. Declines were seen in the general standard of living and average height, while the cost of food increased. It is argued that distribution and acquisition of food has an equal influence on biological well-being as the availability of food at any specific given time.

Diving Into An Issue And Dragonflying On The Surface: Two Contrastive Discursive Patterns Of Class Discussions, Wen Ma Jan 2009

Diving Into An Issue And Dragonflying On The Surface: Two Contrastive Discursive Patterns Of Class Discussions, Wen Ma

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

While a discussion-based instructional approach is often employed by classroom teachers and university professors for teaching English, literature and varied content areas, there are few studies that have focused on how intellectually sophisticated doctoral students participate in class discussions to acquire discipline-specific content and what their discussions look like. This case study examined the discursive features of discussions in a doctoral seminar on qualitative research methods for education. Two types of dialogic engagement were identified: diving into an issue and dragonflying on the surface. These findings may help professors and advanced learners tap the potential of whole class and small …

Drowning Survival In Icy Water: A Review, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly Nov 2008

Drowning Survival In Icy Water: A Review, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

We conducted an extensive literature review using the search terms of “drowning” and “hypothermia” to discover the major factors related to differences in survival rate especially associated with hypothermic effects. Studies indicated that some differences in drowning survival could be identified associated with age, sex, length of submersion, reduced core body temperature, and quality of cardiopulmonary respiratory care. The variability of results associated with the large number of studies prevented us from making any recommendations about whether hypothermia can improve survival among either children or adults.

2d Regional Correlation Analysis Of Single-Molecule Time Trajectories, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu Nov 2008

2d Regional Correlation Analysis Of Single-Molecule Time Trajectories, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We report a new approach of 2D regional correlation analysis capable of analyzing fluctuation dynamics of complex multiple correlated and anticorrelated fluctuations under a noncorrelated noise background. Using this new method, by changing and scanning the start time and end time along a pair of fluctuation trajectories, we are able to map out any defined segments along the fluctuation trajectories and determine whether they are correlated, anticorrelated, or noncorrelated; after which, a cross-correlation analysis can be applied for each specific segment to obtain a detailed fluctuation dynamics analysis. We specifically discuss an application of this approach to analyze single-molecule fluorescence …
