Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young Feb 2015

Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Knowing the psychosocial themes in a specific sport context allows us to understand athletes’ experiences and informs approaches of coaches (Côté et al., 1995) and sport programmers (Danish et al., 2005). Few qualitative studies focus on psychosocial conditions of adult athletes in coached sport settings. The purpose of this study was to capture important psychosocial themes from the perspective of Masters swimmers involved in day-to-day coached swimming environments. Data were collected using semi-structured open-ended interviews with 10 competitive swimmers (5 male, 5 female; M age = 53 years; range: 45-65 years). Analyses revealed four over-arching themes that represented athletes’ a) …

Coaches’ Perceptions Of Video Analysis In College Hockey, Nicholas Czurylo Jan 2015

Coaches’ Perceptions Of Video Analysis In College Hockey, Nicholas Czurylo

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Recent scholarly research has identified performance analysis as a significant part of the coaching process. With technology advancing every day, it has never been easier for coaches to analyze performance anytime or anywhere, no matter the skill level. While the what of performance analysis has been researched in-depth, the how and the why of the use of video-based performance analysis within this coaching process has been ignored. Therefore, with recent scholarly writing in mind, most notably Groom (2012), this study looks to further develop his empirically-based understanding of some of the realities of the use of video-based performance analysis feedback …

Where Are All The Women? The Decline Of Female Coaches Post Title Ix, Madeline Amon Jan 2015

Where Are All The Women? The Decline Of Female Coaches Post Title Ix, Madeline Amon

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

This paper helps illustrate the decline of female coaches in the NCAA post Title IX. Before Title IX was passed female coaches coached over 90% of female athletes and currently, while female sport participation is at an all-time high, female’s coaching female athletes is not. This drop in females coaching is a serious issue that demands change. This paper calls for change within the current NCAA administrative structure. This paper looks at recent literature surrounding the issue and replicates a study conducted by Dr. Nicole LaVoi from the University of Minnesota that illustrates the issue at the Division I level. …

Differentiation Of Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives In Small Market And Large Market Nfl Franchises, C. J. O'Leary

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Using the framework established in Lough & Pharr (2012), as well as Lough & Pharr (2010), this study differentiated the CSR initiatives of specific NFL franchises as cause-related (CRM) or social marketing based on five variables: 1) locus of benefit; 2) outcomes/objectives sought; 3) target market; 4) voluntary exchange; and 5) marketing perspective. The NFL franchises investigated were the New York Giants whom inhabit the NFL’s largest television market, and the Green Bay Packers whom inhabit the NFL’s smallest television market (NFL, 2012). A content analysis was conducted on the “Community” section of each team’s respective website which described their …

Injured Athletes' Preferences Regarding Source Of Emotional Support, Kristin Kutz Jan 2014

Injured Athletes' Preferences Regarding Source Of Emotional Support, Kristin Kutz

Honors Projects

Athletes often experience emotional distress as a result of an injury. Feelings of loss, decreased self-esteem, frustration, and anger are not uncommon. Athletic trainers (ATs) who work with injured athletes are focused on helping the progression of athletes' physical healing, but their role in helping athletes emotionally and psychologically is often unclear. There are twelve Athletic Training Education Competencies that the National Athletic Training Association requires to be taught to undergraduate AT students, one of them being psychosocial intervention and referral. However, little research has been done to define the exact role of ATs in this area, as well as …

Creating An Instrument To Examine Athlete Alumni Philanthropy, Megan Gormley Jan 2014

Creating An Instrument To Examine Athlete Alumni Philanthropy, Megan Gormley

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

For many years, Bowling Green State University has had trouble getting athlete alumni to financially give back to their former program. While developing an instrument to survey the athlete alumni their reasons for giving or not giving, it was determined that no instrument was available to solicit responses. Each school has a unique culture and most surveys that have been used in previous research were very specific to that institution. This project developed a survey that can be easily adapted to any situation and culture so any university can use it as a template. When properly administered, this survey will …
