Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Reconstructing A School District Owned Athletic Facility, James Price
Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Reconstructing A School District Owned Athletic Facility, James Price
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Frank “Buck” Weeber Gymnasium has been a pillar of the suburban Detroit city River Rouge, Michigan since the 1940’s when the emphasis of athletics became established within the community. The gym is the home of 14 state championship basketball teams (13 boys, 1 girls) and many great athletes. However, in 2000 the gym along with the conjoined high school were closed down due to asbestos and poor piping in favor of a new high school across the street (Price, 2016-1017). The new gym inside the high school lacks the same prestige and luster of the “The Buck.” The purpose of …
Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns
Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Academic clustering has become an epidemic across all intercollegiate levels. Academic clustering is present when at least twenty-five percent of an athletic team, or department, is specialized in one academic area (Case, Greer, & Brown, 1987). This concept has been often examined among collegiate athletes; however, most research has been centralized on top-tier football programs and other revenue generation sports. This ignores the collective intercollegiate landscape as a whole. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the idea of academic clustering, but with a more under representative demographic. Women’s Basketball and Softball student athletes’ academic interests within the …

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
This paper develops a guide for improving involvement of parents and other adult contributors’ in youth sport for children aged 6-12 years. The purpose of this guide is to provide practical and applied suggestions for parents grounded in research from the fields of sport psychology, developmental psychology, and parenting psychology. Monsaas (1985) and Wolfenden and Holt (2005) emphasized the importance of having a strong parental support network in youth sport. Knight & Holt (2013) noted that parents would benefit from more specific direction regarding how to show support for their children. To fill this need, the guide utilizes Self Determination …

Enhancing The Experience: An Analysis Of Collegiate Recreation’S Impact On Student Learning, Dorothy Stromdahl
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Collegiate recreation has the opportunity to impact student growth beyond physical activity. Serving as one of the university’s largest employers, collegiate recreation provides students with opportunities to achieve desired university learning outcomes. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to examine what on-the-job activities and experiences impact the five learning domains: career development, civic and community engagement, leadership, ethics and values, and responsible independence. BGSU undergraduate students who have been employed with BGSU Recreation and Wellness for a minimum of one semester were recruited to participate in this study. Respondents who agreed to participate in the study competed a …

Organizational Value Of Social Responsibility In Sport: Creating A Conceptual Framework, Joseph E. Durant
Organizational Value Of Social Responsibility In Sport: Creating A Conceptual Framework, Joseph E. Durant
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a growing phenomenon in the corporate world, and with its growth comes related research. One of the biggest questions surrounding CSR as a part of business plans is whether it has verifiable benefits to the firm. Businesses typically make decisions based on what is best for the firm, so to inquire about the benefits of CSR is natural. Existing literature supports the monetary benefits of CSR as well as identifies non-monetary outcomes that are beneficial to the firm. Amongst the corporate markets that CSR has inhabited, the sport market is unique in its inherent marketing …
Ncaa Compliance Officers’ Perceptions On Cost Of Attendance Legislation, Thomas R. Nisonger
Ncaa Compliance Officers’ Perceptions On Cost Of Attendance Legislation, Thomas R. Nisonger
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Over the past few years, the NCAA has been at the forefront of providing additional benefits to student-athletes and recently the NCAA passed the cost of attendance legislation. But with this legislation comes unintended consequences in the form of a recruiting advantage for many institutions and amendments would need to be made to combat the advantage (Katz, 2015). In order to examine the possibility of a recruiting advantage from the cost of attendance legislation, the senior members of each compliance office within the American Athletic Conference were surveyed (n=11). The survey was used to gain their opinions on various topics …
Being One Of The Gang: A Social Acceptance Approach To Establishing Productive Team Norms, Scott Graupensperger
Being One Of The Gang: A Social Acceptance Approach To Establishing Productive Team Norms, Scott Graupensperger
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Social acceptance into a sport group is a critical motivating factor for sport participation. Indeed, this drive for in-group acceptance is also a key reason why individuals adhere to normative group behavior, which is sometimes dysfunctional, but often productive. The current theory-to-practice article offers a series of suggestions for coaches and practitioners, based on a framework that synthesizes components of the social identity approach (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) with the Waldron and Krane (2005) model. These suggestions are designed to create a sport environment that facilitates social acceptance, and subsequently promote the establishment of, and adherence to, productive team norms.

Does Installing Artificial Turf Create A Honeymoon Effect For College Football Teams?, Ashley E. Birchmeier
Does Installing Artificial Turf Create A Honeymoon Effect For College Football Teams?, Ashley E. Birchmeier
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Most research conducted related to the honeymoon effect and attendance focused on Major League Baseball and stadium renovation. This study however, examined the connection between attendance and installation of artificial turf at the collegiate level. Seven Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Universities in Ohio have installed artificial turf and hosted home games for at least four full seasons. Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio) fit the honeymoon theory, reaching maximum attendance numbers in year two and leveling out by year four.
Student-Athlete Undergraduate Degree And Career Alignment, Courtney C. Cox
Student-Athlete Undergraduate Degree And Career Alignment, Courtney C. Cox
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Little research has been done on student-athletes after graduation. The question driving this study was do athletes use their degree after graduation in lieu of academic clustering, fraud, emphasis on winning and athletic identity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not student-athletes undergraduate degree and career alignment was greater, less, or similar to the average collegiate body. Data was collected from 65 former male student-athletes from a Midwest Division I Mid-Major University over the 2009 through 2015 athletic seasons. Two sports were evaluated, Football (n= 54) and Men’s Basketball (n= 14). Degree fields were determined by …

Jameson's Story: A Tale Of The Human Condition Through Fiction, Steven Kubitza
Honors Projects
A work of fiction focusing on two characters living in the same world, but under much different circumstances. One must try and find out who he is while the other is attempting to uphold his way of life in a society threatening to take it away. The story delves into the ideas of a somewhat dystopian world; one in which our society could ultimately mirror in the near future. The work is unfinished, which is explained in the reflection paper at the beginning of the document.
