Communicative Behaviors Elicited By Leisure Activities In Memory Care Units, Tarynn Clune

Honors Projects

A wide variety of leisure activities used in reminiscence care have been studied for their merits in terms of preventing cognitive decline, and increasing quality of life; however, little is known about what different types have to offer in terms of communicative opportunities. Digitized And Decoupled? Teacher Sensemaking Around Educational Technology In A Model 1:1 Program, Stacy Gherardi Jan 2017

Digitized And Decoupled? Teacher Sensemaking Around Educational Technology In A Model 1:1 Program, Stacy Gherardi

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This mixed-methods study utilized surveys and interviews to analyze teacher sensemaking in a widely acclaimed 1:1 laptop program in a predominantly low-income, predominantly Latino school district. Quantitative and qualitative measures found that teachers across the district used technology in similar ways and that technology strongly increased differentiated instruction, changed how students accessed knowledge, and had a positive impact on assessment practices; a negative relationship between technology and parent engagement was found. Teacher perceptions of the 1:1 program varied widely and were dependent on both personal and organizational factors. Findings suggested a sensemaking process in which teacher beliefs were often decoupled …

The Relationship Between Teacher Perception And African American Male Students’ Iep Referral Rates, Christina Steward May 2016

The Relationship Between Teacher Perception And African American Male Students’ Iep Referral Rates, Christina Steward

Honors Projects

African American male students are overrepresented in special education services. This study was conducted under the framework of Bandura's social cognitive theory, and it used surveys and teacher case studies to evaluate the relationship between teacher perception and African American male students' IEP referral rates. A demographic survey, Ronsanna Bakari's Teaching African American Students Survey (TAASS), and an open ended questionnaire were completed by 24 Ohio teachers. The study's hypothesis was that teachers' negative perceptions of African American students were related to and a predictor of African American male students' high IEP referral rates. The study did not have enough …

Peers Helping Peers: A Model For Planning A Support Group For Women Struggling With Eating Disorders, Jennifer Sims May 2015

Peers Helping Peers: A Model For Planning A Support Group For Women Struggling With Eating Disorders, Jennifer Sims

Honors Projects

Women are constantly bombarded with images that advertise unrealistic beauty standards. These negative portrayals of women often lead to negative self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, unhealthy dieting, extreme exercising and—in more extreme cases—the development of eating disorders (ED). When treating EDs, practitioners often turn to Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT) as the first choice of intervention, but this treatment option lacks the key element of social support. This paper looks to create a model for planning a support group that balances CBT techniques with social support elements. Elements such as self-monitoring, progressive relaxation, homework, goal setting, and psychoeducation will be pulled from CBT models …
