Human Trafficking And Local Law Enforcement, Elizabeth Chesbrough
Human Trafficking And Local Law Enforcement, Elizabeth Chesbrough
Honors Projects
“To protect our kids, we’ve given law enforcement new tools to fight human trafficking (Brett Guthrie).” Though Brett’s hopeful sentiment portrays a police force that is ready to battle the epidemic of modern day slavery, research has shown that local officers are sorely uneducated on the subject. The main focus of this paper is the link between the prevalence of human trafficking in the U.S. and the lack of local law enforcement training on the issue. The first section will be a brief overview of human trafficking, defining and discussing a few relevant details about it first. Next, I will …

How did Christ's death save us? The Atonement is a Christian doctrine which has been heavily debated in how it should be understood since the beginnings of Christianity. This analysis covers the theological theories of the Atonement, narrates a Catholic layman's personal understanding that is based on scholarly research and is kept within the bounds of Catholic doctrine, and summarizes the thoughts and feelings of surveyed college-age Christians on the subject.

Counseling The Media: Bridging Pop Cultural Borders With The Mental Health Profession, Stephanie J. Durham, Michael A. Desposito
Counseling The Media: Bridging Pop Cultural Borders With The Mental Health Profession, Stephanie J. Durham, Michael A. Desposito
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Professional counseling is often defined as a professional relationship meant to empower diverse people towards their mental health and wellness goals (Kaplan, Tarvydas, & Gladding, 2014). While counselors continue to provide professional services in many settings, counseling is not always portrayed in a positive light within television and film. Shows such as 13 Reasons Why and How I Met Your Mother both portray an inaccurate perception of counseling characters who disregard their ethical duties despite the American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics (2014) mandates for safe-guarding the wellbeing of those seeking counseling, honoring multicultural diversity, and advocating for social justice. …

Studies demonstrate that first-year university students are at high risk for weight gain. These reports typically rely on self-selected participants. The purpose of this study was to explore if students who chose to participate in a health-based research study had more desirable health measures and behaviors than students who completed health assessments as part of a first-year seminar course. Health measures included blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), and percent body fat. Health behaviors included dietary patterns (Starting the Conversation questionnaire) and alcohol use (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption). A total of 191 (77% female) participants completed testing in …

Enriching Classroom Learning Through A Microblogging-Supported Activity, K. Li, Kent Darr, Fei Gao
Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications
Researchers have recognized the role that microblogging tools play in enhancing the effectiveness of communication and interaction in the classroom. However, few studies have specifically examined how to use microblogging tools to bring educational resources into the classroom to enrich the student learning experience. The exploratory case study examined an instructional activity designed to expand and deepen student learning experience by having undergraduate students subscribe to, read and share tweets from high-quality Twitter accounts in the field. The findings suggested that students believed that the activity broadened their knowledge on the topics to be learned, helped them see the connections …

Predicting College Completion Among Students With Learning Disabilities, Meifang Yu, Jeanne A. Novak, Matthew Ryan Lavery, Brooks R. Vostal, Julia M. Matuga
School of Counseling and Special Education Faculty Publications
The authors analyzed National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) data to examine the role of high school academic preparation and receipt of postsecondary academic support services (PASS) in predicting college completion among students with learning disabilities. Logistic regression analyses revealed that students who earned a 3.0 GPA in a college prep curriculum were more than twice as likely to complete college than those with a similar GPA who did not complete a college prep curriculum. Furthermore, among students who completed a college prep curriculum, earning a higher GPA and accessing PASS both dramatically increased the likelihood that they would complete college. …

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) provides great beneficial opportunities for individuals within the prison population. Many research studies display the effectiveness of AAT programs in prison settings through their results. The results showed improved moods, decreased stress levels, and increased sense of self-worth. I studied this topic for about a year, and in depth for a semester. This honors project was designed to implement what I had learned from previous research studies into a local correctional facility: Northwest Community Corrections Center. I designed an intervention where residents from the correctional facility spent quality time with the dogs of the Wood County Dog …

The ongoing LGBTQ rights movement saw one of its biggest victories in the landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which recognized same-sex marriages in the United States. This decision was affected by not just scientific understanding of homosexual persons, but by artistic portrayal, demonstrations, and previous judicial decisions regarding homosexuality. The course of the American LGBTQ rights movement seems to run parallel to that of the German gay rights movement of the early 20th century, with a coming together of science, law, and art leading to change, both public and political. This paper highlights the work of Magnus Hirschfeld, a …

Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is designed to provide immediate goods and services to homeless individuals and those nearing homelessness. PHC provides basic needs and critical services in one day at one location. Along with providing valuable and necessary services to help alleviate homelessness, an additional positive outcome for service providers is the opportunity to network with different agency members, and reinforce relationships, collaborations, and partnerships. On October 19, 2016, Wood County, Ohio held its fourth Project Connect (PC) event at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bowling Green, Ohio. This report presents a compilation of data collected at the event, as …

Community Connectedness Within The Lgbt* Community, Vivian Carney
Community Connectedness Within The Lgbt* Community, Vivian Carney
Honors Projects
The purpose of the literature review is to understand community connectedness in regards to LGBT* community resilience, and the interdependence that community connectedness may have with other, similar concepts. The literature review revealed strong ties between the concepts of community interaction, community involvement, and community connectedness including a process of development for community connectedness. In general, the LGBT* community is largely understudied, especially in terms of examining subgroups of the LGBT* community (e.g. transgender) or intersecting identities. Secondly, the purpose of the applied research was to carry out an educational event that would adequately inform attendees the information learned in …

The Effect Of Self-Esteem On Perceptions Of Abuse, Tabitha Dibacco
The Effect Of Self-Esteem On Perceptions Of Abuse, Tabitha Dibacco
Honors Projects
Intimate partner violence has been shown to have serious mental, physical, and emotional consequences for both men and women. Past research has considered low self-esteem as a risk factor, outcome, and moderator of abuse; however, less is known about whether self-esteem influences abuse perception. This study sought to examine the relationships between self-esteem, gender, and type of abuse in college students’ perceptions of abuse. The sample consisted of 207 undergraduate students (140 female, 64 male, and 3 preferred not to answer) between the age of 18-23 years (M= 19.7, SD= 2.4). The procedure included an Abusive Scenarios Survey, the Rosenberg …
