Protecting Consumers From Themselves: Consumer Law And The Vulnerable Consumer, Neil M. Browne, Kerin B. Clapp, Nancy K. Kubasek, Lauren Biksacky Jan 2015

Protecting Consumers From Themselves: Consumer Law And The Vulnerable Consumer, Neil M. Browne, Kerin B. Clapp, Nancy K. Kubasek, Lauren Biksacky

Economics Faculty Publications

Attitudes toward consumer protection are shaped primarily by complex assumptions about human nature and its interaction with modern marketing. The dominant perspective governing American consumer law is individualism, a descriptive and frequently normative assumption that places watchdog responsibilities on the individual consumer. This perspective is described and analyzed through an examination of public policy arguments about (1) advertising that targets children, (2) restrictions on consumption of sugared beverages, and (3) creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Board. Individualism is then contrasted with the portrayal of consumers as vulnerable. Specifically, insights from behavioral economics and neuropsychology are used to gain a …

The Time For Design-Based Research Is Right And Right Now, Jennifer K. Shah, David C. Ensminger, Kimberly Their Jan 2015

The Time For Design-Based Research Is Right And Right Now, Jennifer K. Shah, David C. Ensminger, Kimberly Their

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The science-to-service problem continues to taunt the field of education (Fixsen, Blasé, Naoom, & Wallace, 2009). As an academic discipline, the field requires knowledge generation that adds to or deepens theoretical understandings. As a profession, knowledge generation that solves local problems and supports continuous improvement is necessary. Using design-based research (DBR) provides a means of serving theoretical and practical needs in education, addressing the complexity of education by informing immediate practice while simultaneously contributing to theoretical understandings in the field of education. Using Stokes’ (1977) model of scientific research and knowledge generation, we situate DBR within Pasteur’s quadrant, describe how …

The Impact Of Educational Policy On English Learners In A Rural Indiana School Corporation, April M. Burke Jan 2015

The Impact Of Educational Policy On English Learners In A Rural Indiana School Corporation, April M. Burke

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Indiana English learners (ELs) constitute a rapidly growing portion of the state’s school-aged population, and those classified as limited English proficient are low performers on the state test. The purpose of this embedded mixed methods study was to understand how school personnel respond to accountability mandates, interpret test scores, and make decisions on behalf of ELs. Interviews were conducted with four administrators and three EL teachers from a rural Indiana school corporation (i.e., school district) with one of the state’s largest EL populations. In addition, four years of student test scores from the corporation were analyzed. Findings indicate that in …

“The Cane Of Love:” Social And Cultural Reform Of Corporal Punishment In South Korea, Seney Higginbotham Feb 2014

“The Cane Of Love:” Social And Cultural Reform Of Corporal Punishment In South Korea, Seney Higginbotham

International ResearchScape Journal

With the public release of a very controversial video of a middle school teacher beating a student, much attention has been put on South Korea domestically as well as internationally to establish and reform policies regarding corporal punishment in schools. Since corporal punishment has been practiced in the classroom for centuries, it has been a hard fought battle of rapid social change and conservation of culture between those who wish to protect established cultural norms that accept corporal punishment in the classroom versus progressive ideas that strive to protect the integrity and human rights of school children.

Teacher Professionalism: What Educators Can Learn From Social Workers, Mary Antony Bair Jan 2014

Teacher Professionalism: What Educators Can Learn From Social Workers, Mary Antony Bair

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Although there are numerous calls to enhance the professionalism of teachers, there is little empirical research in the United States that examines educators’ understanding of the concept. This exploratory case study compared the conceptualization of professionalism by faculty and students in a college of education vis-à-vis the conceptualization of the construct by faculty and students in a school of social work. Findings revealed that participants in the education program expressed individualistic and somewhat restricted views of professionalism. Social work faculty and some social work students, on the other hand, expressed a collective and extended view of the concept. These findings …
