A Focus Group Study Of The Academic Success And Satisfaction Among Undergraduates With Undecided Majors, Tiffany Alexander Apr 2013

A Focus Group Study Of The Academic Success And Satisfaction Among Undergraduates With Undecided Majors, Tiffany Alexander

Honors Projects

This project interviewed 4 initially undecided major students who now have declared majors in a focus group setting to determine their feelings of satisfaction and success. The study has three major findings. First, students felt their initial undecided status allowed more flexible course selection and resulted in a more well-rounded education. Second, while students liked this greater flexibility, students felt after declaring a major, they constantly played “catch up” to graduate on time and to receive career internships. Lastly, students liked their pre-major advisors, but wanted advisors to give them more time, career direction and advice, and to have a …

The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman Apr 2013

The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman

Honors Projects

Because shell-shock is a term specific to World War I but describes a condition which remains today, this paper sets the context for studying the British experience of shell-shock by carefully explaining what modern psychology says regarding PTSD and examining a few select texts by Wilfred Owen to demonstrate the psychological concepts in historic pieces. A historical comparison is made between the modern understanding of PTSD and the historic understanding of shell-shock as set forth in the Freudian paradigm between 1914 and 1920. The final pages examine the effects of this paradigm on the conclusions drawn by the War Office …

A Comparison Of The Legal Analysis Of "The Market" In The United States And European Union, Facundo Bouzat Apr 2013

A Comparison Of The Legal Analysis Of "The Market" In The United States And European Union, Facundo Bouzat

Honors Projects

Words are often more of a stimulus for our imagination than a clear transfer of shared meaning. Their multiple possible meanings all signal different implications. A key concept used by court systems when they consider cases related to economic regulation is “the market.” Oftentimes, the concept is used as if it always means a particular form of the market. This paper addresses the question: How sensitive are U.S. and European courts to the negative social implications that flow from particular forms of “the market” in cases related to market regulation? To answer this question, first I explain the different economic …

The Effects Of Community Service On Middle School Students' Self-Esteem, Megan Leiss

Honors Projects

As an education major and a student leader at Bowling Green State University I have grown immensely in the past four years. I feel this growth has been as a result of my involvement with service as well as the positive impact my professors have left on me. Therefore my honors project was developed in hopes of me creating an organization for my future students to be a part of to help them grow, too. This project researches the effects of community service on middle school students’ self-esteem by surveying students involved with a community service organization known as K-Kids. …

Helping Disconnected College Students Find Their Niche: Implementing A Peer Ambassador Program On Co, David Denison

Honors Projects

For my Honors Project, I developed and implemented the Peer Ambassador Program for BGSU's Counseling Center. The Peer Ambassador Program was designed to help disconnected students heighten their involvement in the campus community. Generally, this program serves as a complement to students’ regular counseling. The Peer Ambassador meets individually with students in the Counseling Center after receiving a referral from a staff counselor. The Peer Ambassador Program not only serves Counseling Center clients; it also provides a valuable internship opportunity to undergraduate psychology students.

Career Services Usage: An Analysis Of Efficacy And Contextual Barriers' Influence, China Billotte Apr 2013

Career Services Usage: An Analysis Of Efficacy And Contextual Barriers' Influence, China Billotte

Honors Projects

Higher education institutions nationwide have begun providing their students with career services centers to assist them with professional development workshops, career consultations, and useful resources. Despite this, many college graduates leave without ever having utilized them. Previous research regarding career services has identified that social stigmas and lack of awareness negatively impact students’ usage of career service centers (Fouad et al., 2006). However, there is no existing research that examines the effects of contextual barriers or efficacy (e.g. self-efficacy, career search efficacy) in conjunction with subjective norms and awareness of services on the usage of career services. This study examined …

Honors Projects

This study examines what behaviors undergraduate, heterosexual female Bowling Green State University students age 18-24 classify as “Intimate Partner Violence” and as “Intimate Partner Abuse.” This research begins to explore how this population defines these terms through looking at what types of behaviors are seen as violence and what types of behaviors are seen as abuse. Participants were randomly selected to take one of two online surveys. One survey asked participants to decide if listed behaviors were “Intimate Partner Violence” when committed by a male partner against a female partner. The other survey asked the same but replaced “Intimate Partner …

Consumption And Dependency Of Social Network Sites As A News Medium: A Comparison Between College Students And General Population, Louisa Ha, Kisung Yoon, Xiaoqun Zhang

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

This exploratory study investigates social network sites (SNS) users’ time allocation behavior among various traditional and new media. Specifically, it examines the difference in degree of dependency on SNS between the young generation and the general population as a new form of news medium based on the media system dependency (MSD) and the microeconomic consumption (MEC) theories. The research results reveal that SNS, along with other online media, such as online audio/video news, are the preferred news sources for young people and they are more likely to be interested in soft news than hard news. SNS has become online users’ …

Father’S Contributions To Housework And Childcare And Parental Aggravation Among First-Time Parents, Alfred Demaris, Annette Mahoney, Kenneth A. Pargament Apr 2013

Father’S Contributions To Housework And Childcare And Parental Aggravation Among First-Time Parents, Alfred Demaris, Annette Mahoney, Kenneth A. Pargament

Sociology Faculty Publications

This study investigated the associations between fathers’ contributions to housework and childcare and both spouses’ parenting aggravation. It was hypothesized that greater father contributions to domestic labor would be associated with more paternal aggravation but less maternal aggravation. Data are from a four-wave study of 178 married couples undergoing the transition to first parenthood. Dyadic growth-curve models revealed gender differences in aggravation trajectories over the first year of the child’s life. Fathers were higher in initial aggravation but mothers’ aggravation grew at a faster rate over time. The primary hypothesis was only partially supported. Fathers’ contributions to childcare were associated …

Translating Mathematics Efficacy, Gabriel T. Matney, Yupadee Panarach, Jack Jackson Mar 2013

Translating Mathematics Efficacy, Gabriel T. Matney, Yupadee Panarach, Jack Jackson

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

This paper presents our work in translating the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (MTEBI) from English to Thai and our resulting initial investigation with 262 Thai pre-service teachers. The MTEBI underwent confirmatory factor analysis indicating two independent scales of Personal Mathematics Teaching Efficacy and Mathematics Teaching Outcome Expectancy (Enochs, Smith, Huinker, 2000). The translation process occurred over several meetings between two US educators and one Thai educator. To check for reliability the instrument was translated into Thai and back translated into English.

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith Mar 2013

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Conflict minerals are becoming a significant concern in the international community (as seen in the passage of legislature regulating and addressing them such as America’s Dodd Frank Act). Through the efforts of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and grassroots organizations (among others), Africa’s conflict minerals are receiving an ever increasing amount of attention. Though conflict minerals are mined in a variety of nations around the world, one nation that is endowed with all four minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold) discussed in this paper is the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Along with being a nation highly endowed with …
