Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Aging Population, Lori A. Sherlock, W. Guyton Hornsby, Jr., James Rye Aug 2013

Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Aging Population, Lori A. Sherlock, W. Guyton Hornsby, Jr., James Rye

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Neurocognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, is considered to be the world’s fastest growing disease (Alzheimer's Association, 2011). Due to this escalation, research focused on determining causes, accelerants, impeding factors, and preventative strategies has become a focus of interest within the field. One of the principal points of study is the role that exercise plays in the maintenance or fortification against neurocognitive decline. Though there is a robust library of research focused on the effects of land-based exercise on cognitive function, currently there is no research that discusses the impact of aquatic-based exercise on these parameters. …

Equine-Assisted Therapy And Mindfulness: A Potential Correlation, Erin Caskey Aug 2013

Equine-Assisted Therapy And Mindfulness: A Potential Correlation, Erin Caskey

Honors Projects

Equine-Assisted Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses horses to connect to people (Klontz, Bivens, Leinart, & Klontz, 2007). Clients of all ages with a variety of different reasons for seeking out this type of treatment have benefitted in many ways, including learning to trust and to be confident. A second therapeutic modality, mindfulness, is often a type of meditation based on focusing fully on the present moment (Niemiec, 2012). Researchers consider the term “mindfulness” to be synonymous with “awareness (Miller, Fletcher, & Kabat-Zinn, 1995).” It can also be a “state of being” and it has been found be …

Unobtrusive Observation Of Caregiver-Child Pairs At Public Pools And Playgrounds: Implications For Child Unintentional Injury Risk, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study aimed to determine and compare the nature of supervision children received in two settings that have different levels of environmental risk, an aquatic setting (public pools) and a non-aquatic setting (playground). An observational design was implemented to examine caregiver and child behaviors at six indoor public pools and four playgrounds. Chi-square tests of homogeneity were conducted to determine associations between caregiver and child variables. Pre-school children received significantly higher levels of supervision than school aged children in both settings. For school aged children the level of supervision varied between settings, with children significantly more likely to be unsupervised …

Scan Time Goals With Analysis Of Scan Times From Aquatic Facilities, John Hunsucker, Scott Davison Aug 2013

Scan Time Goals With Analysis Of Scan Times From Aquatic Facilities, John Hunsucker, Scott Davison

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This paper aims to understand the challenges associated with establishing a time goal for scanning a lifeguard’s area of responsibility and identifying critical incidents requiring a response. It analyzed the results of 289 lifeguard inspections from aquatic facilities with management emphasis on scanning. The scanning summaries from the inspections cover 15,737 lifeguard observations where lifeguards were trained using two different scanning goals: 1) scan their area of responsibility within 15 s with an emphasis on using visual recognition signals to identify an incident and 2) recognize victims within 10 seconds in their area of responsibility. Analysis showed an average scan …

Large-Scale Network Organization In The Avian Forebrain: A Connectivity Matrix And Theoretical Analysis, Verner Peter Bingman, Murray Shanahan, Toru Shimizu, Martin Wild, Onur Güntürkün Jun 2013

Large-Scale Network Organization In The Avian Forebrain: A Connectivity Matrix And Theoretical Analysis, Verner Peter Bingman, Murray Shanahan, Toru Shimizu, Martin Wild, Onur Güntürkün

Psychology Faculty Publications

Many species of birds, including pigeons, possess demonstrable cognitive capacities, and some are capable of cognitive feats matching those of apes. Since mammalian cortex is laminar while the avian telencephalon is nucleated, it is natural to ask whether the brains of these two cognitively capable taxa, despite their apparent anatomical dissimilarities, might exhibit common principles of organization on some level. Complementing recent investigations of macro-scale brain connectivity in mammals, including humans and macaques, we here present the first large-scale "wiring diagram" for the forebrain of a bird. Using graph theory, we show that the pigeon telencephalon is organized along similar …

Drink, Drive, Go To Jail? A Study Of Police Officers Arrested For Drunk Driving, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Steven L. Brewer, Natalie E. Todak

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The purpose of the current study is to provide empirical data on cases of police driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and/or drugs. It identifies events that may have influenced the decision to arrest, including associated traffic accidents, fatalities, officer resistance, the refusal of field sobriety tests, and the refusal of blood alcohol content (BAC) tests. The study is a quantitative content analysis of news articles identified through the Google News search engine using 48 automated Google Alerts queries. Data are analyzed on 782 DUI arrest cases of officers employed by 511 nonfederal law enforcement agencies throughout the United …

Comparison Of Personality Traits Among Estimators, Project Managers, And The Population, Alan Atalah May 2013

Comparison Of Personality Traits Among Estimators, Project Managers, And The Population, Alan Atalah

Construction Management Faculty Publications

The intuitive hypothesis that Construction Management Professionals (CMP) must have a high level of people skills implies that they should be different than the population at large in terms of people skills. In addition, estimators do not deal with as many people as project managers; therefore, they may not have/need as high of people skills as project managers. This paper tests these hypotheses through the analysis of 47 personality traits of 102 experienced applicants for construction management positions and compares this analysis to the traits of the overall population. The analysis suggested that (1) CMP were significantly different from the …

Designing Asynchronous Online Discussion Environments: Recent Progress And Possible Future Directions, Fei Gao, Tianyi Zhang, Teresa Franklin May 2013

Designing Asynchronous Online Discussion Environments: Recent Progress And Possible Future Directions, Fei Gao, Tianyi Zhang, Teresa Franklin

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Asynchronous online discussion environments are important platforms to support learning. Research suggests, however, threaded forums, one of the most popular asynchronous discussion environments, do not often foster productive online discussions naturally. This paper explores how certain properties of threaded forums have affected or constrained the quality of discussions, and argues that developing alternative discussion environments is highly needed to offer better support for asynchronous online communication. Using the Productive Discussion Model developed by Gao, Wang & Sun (2009), we analyzed current work on four types of asynchronous discussion environments that have been developed and researched: constrained environments, visualized environments, anchored …

Conceptual Distinction Between The Critical P Value And The Type I Error Rate In Permutation Testing, Richard B. Anderson May 2013

Conceptual Distinction Between The Critical P Value And The Type I Error Rate In Permutation Testing, Richard B. Anderson

Psychology Faculty Publications

To counter past assertions that permutation testing is not distribution-free, this article clarifies that the critical p value (alpha) in permutation testing is not a Type I error rate and that a test's validity is independent of the concept of Type I error.

Conditional Effects Of Interracial Interactions On College Student Outcomes, Nicholas A. Bowman May 2013

Conditional Effects Of Interracial Interactions On College Student Outcomes, Nicholas A. Bowman

Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

Given the increasing racial diversity among American college students and society, it is critical to promote meaningful interracial interactions during college. Although a burgeoning literature demonstrates the link between interracial interactions and an array of student outcomes, some important issues have been largely overlooked. Most research on interracial interactions does not examine how these effects might vary depending on the groups involved in the interaction. The outcomes for interracial interactions may differ not only between minority and majority students, but also for racial minorities interacting with Whites versus with other people of color. This study explores whether the link between …
