The Story Of Delray: A Case Study On Environmental And Restorative Justice In Detroit, Danielle Trauth-Jurman
Honors Projects
An in-depth case study on environmental and restorative justice in Delray, Michigan. Delray was a vibrant, immigrant community with rich history and cultural significance that was slowly transformed into an industrial dumping ground. This evolution drove many middle class families out of Delray and into nicer parts of the city, leaving behind only the elderly and the individuals too poor to move away. Exploring the ideas of environmental justice and examining the current research on environmental inequality.

A recent report from the American Association of Community Colleges indicates that about half of first-year students do not return for a second year, and 35% of students withdraw despite having an A or B average. These students may have particularly challenging circumstances, such as juggling family and work obligations along with school. The authors suggest that students’ sense of “hopefulness” forecasts their academic success and persistence, and offer an account of their ongoing campus-wide efforts to create more hopeful classrooms and experiences for their students.

Recent Illinois legislation requires school principals in the state to be qualified to provide school leadership for children from preschool to grade twelve instead of kindergarten to grade twelve. Illinois is the first state to make such a change and may well serve as a model for change in school leadership preparation on a national level. The inclusion of the requirement for school leaders to provide leadership to preschool children is a welcome one. However, this legislation leaves open how such leadership should be conducted and how it should be developed in principal preparation programs. The silence of the legislation …

Response To Intervention In Illinois: An Exploration Of School Professionals’ Attitudes And Beliefs, Amy Feiker Hollenbeck, Eva Patrikakou
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The present study examines school professionals’ self-reported perceptions of readiness in relation to the implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) following a mandated deadline across the state of Illinois, as well their beliefs about the framework. A survey was developed to measure variables in the model related to school professionals’ training and levels of confidence about various aspects of RTI. Results indicate that the model applied differently to school psychologists and other school professionals, explaining 64% and 66%, respectively, of the variance in perceiving RTI as a beneficial change. While there were differences in the number and type of variables …

Designing Critical Thinking Based Lesson In Social Studies Education, Kathleen Adelblue
Designing Critical Thinking Based Lesson In Social Studies Education, Kathleen Adelblue
Honors Projects
This paper explains the importance of integrating critical thinking and analysis skills into social studies curriculum. It is designed to show teachers how the process of planning and assessing are essential when considering how to implement the instruction of these skills. I start by explaining how to plan lessons so that they align with skills-based objectives and incorporates the state standards. Then, I outline ways to create lessons focused on developing critical thinking and analysis skills. Because assessment is such an important piece of lesson planning and implementation, the paper has a section dedicated strictly to this topic. It explains …

Honors Projects
In completion of my Honors Project, I created Brighter Connections Theatre (BCT). This program was designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) ages 8 to 14 years old. BCT ran for six weeks this past summer in Dayton, OH and had a total of seven participants. Four of these children and their parents agreed to be research participants. My team of volunteers and I documented the progress made by these research participants in certain social and behavioral areas through the process of drama therapy. This document consists of a literature review of drama therapy, a detailed overview of the …
Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy
Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy
Honors Projects
Commercial manufacturing and widespread use of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in the United States has left lasting negative effects today. These persistent contaminants continue to bioaccumulate in the food web because of their stable structure, long half-life, and high lipophilicity. Adding PCB to the diet of Sprague-Dawley rats during pregnancy and lactation alters the thyroid status of offspring, and the behavior of the dams and pups. To determine a critical period or “window†of development with the greatest impact of PCB exposure of females on offspring fitness, female Sprague-Dawley rats were mated and fed PCB diet (25 ppm PCB 47 and …

Gendered Power: Looking At Mad Men, Power, And Its Limits, Ashley N. Cox
Honors Projects
This project examines the ways in which power circulates and moves in AMC's show, Mad Men, using Michel Foucault's definitions of power. In this paper, I examine the ways in which the movements of power are different in terms of gender and look at what the show reveals, through its visual narrative and its plot, regarding gender and power in America's late-stage capitalist setting.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Little is known about the transfer of swimming skills from indoor, flat, calm conditions to outdoor, wavy, unsteady conditions. The aim of the current study was to examine the differences in swimming, floating and entry skills in children between calm and simulated open water conditions. Sixty-six children, 11 years of age, were tested on two occasions, once in calm water and once in simulated open water conditions. Testing consisted of a 200 m time trial, a 3 min back floating test, a diving entry, and a rolling entry. The results show an 8% decrement in performance on the 200 m …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this pilot exploratory study was to determine any immediate effects of a session of aquatic exercise (AE) compared to contrast therapy shallow water treadmill running (CSWR). Twenty-nine elite footballers were allocated randomly to AE or CSWR, 48 hours after a practice match. Outcome measures included maximum vertical jump height; visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain; the squeeze test for adductor strength, sit and reach test, plus ankle and hip range of movement. A significant difference between groups was found for maximum vertical jump height with the AE group being able to jump higher after the intervention (95% …

Readiness To Rescue: Bystander Perceptions Of Their Capacity To Respond In A Drowning Emergency, Kevin Moran, Teresa Stanley
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
From 1980-2012, 81 persons drowned in New Zealand while attempting to rescue others. Of these, most (80%) were male, and all rescue fatalities occurred in open waters. Festivalgoers (N = 415) attending a cultural event in Auckland, New Zealand took part in a water safety survey that included information on their readiness to respond in a drowning emergency. Many indicated they would jump in and rescue a victim (47%), less than one third (30%) would get flotation to the victim. Significantly more males responded that they would jump in and rescue (males 55%, females 40%). Most (62%) estimated that they …
An Exploration Of Crime By Policewomen, Philip M. Stinson, Natalie E. Todak, Mary Dodge
An Exploration Of Crime By Policewomen, Philip M. Stinson, Natalie E. Todak, Mary Dodge
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The current study explores criminal conduct by policewomen. This information is increasingly relevant as police departments hire more women, especially if the crimes committed by policewomen differ from those of policemen. News searches identified 105 cases depicting arrests of policewomen. A content analysis was performed. Findings indicate differences exist between crimes committed by policemen and policewomen, as well as by policewomen and women in general. Crime by policewomen is most often profit-motivated. Policewomen had fewer years of service and lower ranks, committed less violent crimes, and were more likely to receive suspensions for off-duty crimes compared to their male peers.
