A Content Analysis Of Criminal Justice Policy Review, 1986-2008, Philip M. Stinson, Jennifer L. Huck, Jason D. Spraitz Jun 2010

A Content Analysis Of Criminal Justice Policy Review, 1986-2008, Philip M. Stinson, Jennifer L. Huck, Jason D. Spraitz

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Academic disciplines have been characterized as static institutions that do not change or conform to outside forces. Abbott (1999) and Silbey (2000) have discussed this issue in relation to how the history of refereed journals in the social sciences can provide information on department, institution, and disciplinary changes that often wear a false guise of continuity. This paper analyzes the content of Criminal Justice Policy Review by replicating the methodology Silbey (2000) used to study the content of Law & Society Review in terms of editorship, authorship, article contents, method and mode of research, and article topics. The results indicate …

Risk Of Drowning: The "Iceberg Phenomenon" Re-Visited, Kevin Moran May 2010

Risk Of Drowning: The "Iceberg Phenomenon" Re-Visited, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Three decades ago, Schuman and colleagues (1977) used the visual metaphor of an iceberg whose underwater base contained a substantial layer of self-reported incidents that posed a serious threat to life so as to illustrate the true extent of the risk of drowning. This present study uses the iceberg metaphor to explore the magnitude of that risk among youth. In addition to describing the fatal and non-fatal drowning incidents at the visual tip of the iceberg, the study presents data from surf rescue records and survey data on exposure to risk and incidence of a life-threatening submersion experience. Most youth …

The Effects Of Strength Training In Hydrogymnastics For Middle-Age Women, Anelise Bueno Ambrosini, Michel Arias Brentano, Marcelo Coertjens, Luiz Fernando Martins Kruel May 2010

The Effects Of Strength Training In Hydrogymnastics For Middle-Age Women, Anelise Bueno Ambrosini, Michel Arias Brentano, Marcelo Coertjens, Luiz Fernando Martins Kruel

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study analyzed the effects of different strength training protocols carried out in hydrogymnastics workouts on the maximal strength of the shoulder horizontal flexors (SHF), shoulder horizontal extensors (SHE), and hip extensors (HE) muscles. Fifty-two women (ages 50.4 ± 14.15 years) were divided into two groups: hydrogymnastics with strength training without resistive equipment (HS) and hydrogymnastics with strength training using resistive equipment (HSE). The training lasted 12 weeks (2x a week) and the intensity was selected using Borg’s rating of perceived exertion scale for both groups. After 12 weeks of training, both groups showed an increase in maximal strength of …

The Recreational Skippers Ticket And Its Influence On Boater Behavior, Amanpreet Virk, Terri Pikora May 2010

The Recreational Skippers Ticket And Its Influence On Boater Behavior, Amanpreet Virk, Terri Pikora

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Recreational boating is a popular leisure activity and possibly the least regulated of all forms of transport. To reduce the number of recreational boating injuries and incidents, educational measures are important and mandatory boating education and training is recommended. The Recreational Skippers Ticket (RST) was introduced in Western Australia (WA) in 2006 so that people in charge of a recreational vessel have a minimum level of skill and knowledge needed to protect themselves and their passenger and to share the water safely with others. This objective of this study was to monitor the uptake of the RST, to assess its …

Age-Dependent Autonomic Changes Following Immersion In Cool, Neutral, And Warm Water Temperatures, Kasee Hildenbrand, Bruce E. Becker, Rebekah Whitcomb, James P. Sanders May 2010

Age-Dependent Autonomic Changes Following Immersion In Cool, Neutral, And Warm Water Temperatures, Kasee Hildenbrand, Bruce E. Becker, Rebekah Whitcomb, James P. Sanders

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Aquatic immersion has been reported to produce a significant number of physiological changes in blood pressure, heart rate variability (HRV), autonomic nervous system (ANS), and core temperature in young healthy subjects. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of water immersion in younger and older populations, determining whether there are age related differences for ANS regulation measures in cool, neutral and warm water. Vitals and ANS measures were collected from two samples representing different age-groups in the general population. It was found that water immersion produced a significant number of important physiologic responses such as decreased blood …

Development Of In-Water-Intervention (Iwi) In A Lifeguard Protocol With Analysis Of Rescue History, John Hunsucker, Scott Davison May 2010

Development Of In-Water-Intervention (Iwi) In A Lifeguard Protocol With Analysis Of Rescue History, John Hunsucker, Scott Davison

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This paper discusses the development and effectiveness of a protocol for lifeguards in enclosed aquatic facilities with special emphasis on scanning, rapid rescue, and applying a resuscitation procedure in the water immediately after contacting a drowning victim. We call this set of procedures In-The-Water-Intervention (IWI). Testing showed abdominal thrusts (ATs) adapted for the protocol were the most effective IWI that could reliably be performed in deep water by 16-18 year-old lifeguards. Data analysis was done on a waterpark attendance of 63,800,000 with 56,000 rescues and 32 respiratory failures including four deaths. This paper concludes that this lifeguard protocol is effective …

Water Freedom For All: The Halliwick Method, Susan J. Grosse May 2010

Water Freedom For All: The Halliwick Method, Susan J. Grosse

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This article details the foundations and implementation principles of the Halliwick Method of swim instruction. This method is particularly notable for the success it generates in independent mobility by individuals with disabilities. The Halliwick Method can be very useful to facilitate aquatic participation for individuals who have had limited success in more traditional learn-to-swim programs. Discussion of the Halliwick Method includes hydrodynamic principles, skill progressions, and program implementation. Critical concepts are explained with examples. Application of Halliwick instruction to a variety of population groups is discussed. Implementation of Halliwick activities can broaden the population of individuals who, heretofore, might not …

Hollywood Stars’ Involvement In Aquatics And Water Safety, Stathis Avramidis May 2010

Hollywood Stars’ Involvement In Aquatics And Water Safety, Stathis Avramidis

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of this educational review article was to identify cases of Hollywood stars who have been involved in aquatics. A literature search was conducted using the terms ‘drowning’, ‘Hollywood’, ‘actor’, rescue’, ‘aquatics’, ‘swimming’ and ‘lifeguard’. It was found that several Hollywood film stars (n = 33; males = 20, females = 13) have worked as lifeguards (n = 12), performed lifeguard rescues (n = 2), or lifesaving rescues (n = 4), were aquatics athletes (n = 6), or suffered drown-related incidents (n = 9). A brief overview of those actors and their involvement in aquatics is presented.
