Do Lifeguards Monitor The Events They Should?, Lyndsey K. Lanagan-Leitzel, Cathleen M. Moore Aug 2010

Do Lifeguards Monitor The Events They Should?, Lyndsey K. Lanagan-Leitzel, Cathleen M. Moore

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Lifeguard training texts suggest that a lifeguard should continually scan their zone of coverage, carefully examining patrons whose behavior is consistent with drowning or distress. The current study examined whether lifeguard performance is consistent with these specifications, and whether these behaviors have enough visual interest to attract the gaze of non-lifeguards looking for drowning behaviors (“trained”) or those who were given no specified target (“naïve”). Participants viewed video clips of natural swimming taken from three aquatic locations while an eye-tracker recorded their eye position. Lifeguard performance was to some extent consistent with the specifications above, although on many measures it …

Development Of An Aquatic Exercise Training Protocol For The Asthmatic Population, Kasee Hildenbrand, Sara Nordio, Timothy S. Freson, Bruce E. Becker Aug 2010

Development Of An Aquatic Exercise Training Protocol For The Asthmatic Population, Kasee Hildenbrand, Sara Nordio, Timothy S. Freson, Bruce E. Becker

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this article is to propose creation of a consistent, measureable 12-week aquatic exercise progression for individuals diagnosed with asthma. An aquatic exercise option not requiring swim skills may offer real value, but no previous literature explicitly describes a standardized non-swimming aquatic exercise progression. Participants were diagnosed, medically managed asthmatics in a rural community. Guidelines set forth by AEA and ACSM were used in the development of the exercise program and progression. By the end of the 12 weeks, instructors were challenging participants with multi-level travel sets and complex timed sequences meeting programmatic goals for exercise intensity progression. …

Lifeguard Legislation In Greece, Stathis Avramidis Aug 2010

Lifeguard Legislation In Greece, Stathis Avramidis

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Legislation dealing with lifeguards can have a major impact on all aspects of aquatic safety, including employers and employees, certifying organizations, local authorities and swimmers. The purpose of the present study was to critically evaluate legislation in Greece related to lifeguarding. Results show that although lifeguarding is by law mandatory, changes need to be made to focus on training and examination standards, the name and meaning of the lifeguard qualification, and the establishment and operation of lifeguard agencies and aquatic facilities.

Balance Specific Training In Water And On Land In Older Adults: A Pilot Study, Robyn Lin Anderson, Elizabeth Fishback Aug 2010

Balance Specific Training In Water And On Land In Older Adults: A Pilot Study, Robyn Lin Anderson, Elizabeth Fishback

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study compared the effectiveness of water and land based balance specific exercise in older adults. Twelve participants engaged in either water (W) or land (L) exercise consisting of a standard class and balance training. Both classes exercised for 60 minutes, 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Balance tests were administered pre- and postintervention. A 2x2 factorial ANOVA with repeated measures on the second factor (p < .05) demonstrated that participants of both groups improved significantly in functional reach, times “up & go,” step test right and left leg, and 6-min walk. No changes were found in tandem gait, one-leg stance or between the exercise conditions. These results suggest that when both water and land-based programs focus on balance specific training the mode of exercise is less important than the specificity of the intervention. I conclude that water exercise is an important mode to consider for improving balance in older adults due to the supporting nature and the safe exercise environment of the water.

Watching Parents, Watching Kids: Water Safety Supervision Of Young Children At The Beach, Kevin Moran Aug 2010

Watching Parents, Watching Kids: Water Safety Supervision Of Young Children At The Beach, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The number of children who drown at open-water locations such as surf beaches increases with age. In New Zealand, from 1980-2002, 70% of 5-9-year-olds (n = 71) drowned in open water locations. Little is known about parental supervision of young children at beaches. The purpose of this paper is to report on exploratory observations of caregiver supervision of children at the beach. Two experienced lifeguards were trained to observe caregiver water safety supervisory behaviors at 18 popular beaches in the summer of 2006/7. Of the 544 observations made, one quarter (24%) of children in the water were not considered to …
