Sensing Of Carboxylate Drugs In Urine By A Supramolecular Sensor Array, Yuanli Liu, Tsuyoshi Minami, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Zhuo Wang, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Chemistry Faculty Publications
A supramolecular sensor array consisting of eight chemosensors embedded in a hydrogel matrix was used to sense carboxylate drugs. The discriminatory power of the array has been evaluated using principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis. The eight-member sensor array has been shown to accurately identify 14 carboxylates in water with 100% classification accuracy. To demonstrate the potential for practical utility in the physiological environment, analysis of carboxylate drugs in human urine was also performed achieving 100% correct classification. In addition, the array performance in semiquantitative identification of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs has been investigated, and the results show that the …

Improving Pediatric Wellness: An Analysis Of How Schools Can Help, Carrie Buchert
Improving Pediatric Wellness: An Analysis Of How Schools Can Help, Carrie Buchert
Honors Projects
Childhood obesity is a growing concern due to limited physical activity and unhealthy diets. Low-cost, easy-to-implement solutions for encouraging students to make healthier choices in their nutrition and physical activity may result in life-long changes to their overall well-being. This project will assess the current programs in place for students and trends in their choices on nutrition and physical activity using administrations’ responses surveyed statewide. After collecting these initial data, a set of proposed, low-cost solutions for improving student wellness will be sent to the school personnel for further refinement. Finally, a comprehensive set of practical solutions will be distributed …

With over 300 student organizations on campus at Bowling Green State University, one would think that nearly everything has been covered. Last year, however, I was handed a project that had only been done sporadically in previous years on campus and in the community and could use some additional attention. The project was to hold a benefit performance to raise money in the support of the fight against HIV/AIDS. The initial plan was to just carry out the project as had previously been done, simply scheduling a benefit performance with a few friends. However, after thinking through the project and …
The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman
The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman
Honors Projects
Because shell-shock is a term specific to World War I but describes a condition which remains today, this paper sets the context for studying the British experience of shell-shock by carefully explaining what modern psychology says regarding PTSD and examining a few select texts by Wilfred Owen to demonstrate the psychological concepts in historic pieces. A historical comparison is made between the modern understanding of PTSD and the historic understanding of shell-shock as set forth in the Freudian paradigm between 1914 and 1920. The final pages examine the effects of this paradigm on the conclusions drawn by the War Office …

Female Scientists, The Military, And Informing Policy , Colleen Coyne
Honors Projects
The Manhattan Project, which was ultimately responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb, provided previously scarce opportunities for female scientists to contribute to a large government/military research project. Although women found positions in the Manhattan Project more easily than previous or other projects, the work conducted by those women was largely perceived as having reduced significance than similar work being conducted by male scientists. In the male dominated culture, women were once again subjugated to the sidelines despite the significant contributions made by female scientists. In general, the opportunities for scientists to inform political and public policy was limited …

A Comparison Of The Legal Analysis Of "The Market" In The United States And European Union, Facundo Bouzat
A Comparison Of The Legal Analysis Of "The Market" In The United States And European Union, Facundo Bouzat
Honors Projects
Words are often more of a stimulus for our imagination than a clear transfer of shared meaning. Their multiple possible meanings all signal different implications. A key concept used by court systems when they consider cases related to economic regulation is “the market.†Oftentimes, the concept is used as if it always means a particular form of the market. This paper addresses the question: How sensitive are U.S. and European courts to the negative social implications that flow from particular forms of “the market†in cases related to market regulation? To answer this question, first I explain the different economic …

Helping Disconnected College Students Find Their Niche: Implementing A Peer Ambassador Program On Co, David Denison
Honors Projects
For my Honors Project, I developed and implemented the Peer Ambassador Program for BGSU's Counseling Center. The Peer Ambassador Program was designed to help disconnected students heighten their involvement in the campus community. Generally, this program serves as a complement to students’ regular counseling. The Peer Ambassador meets individually with students in the Counseling Center after receiving a referral from a staff counselor. The Peer Ambassador Program not only serves Counseling Center clients; it also provides a valuable internship opportunity to undergraduate psychology students.
Career Services Usage: An Analysis Of Efficacy And Contextual Barriers' Influence, China Billotte
Career Services Usage: An Analysis Of Efficacy And Contextual Barriers' Influence, China Billotte
Honors Projects
Higher education institutions nationwide have begun providing their students with career services centers to assist them with professional development workshops, career consultations, and useful resources. Despite this, many college graduates leave without ever having utilized them. Previous research regarding career services has identified that social stigmas and lack of awareness negatively impact students’ usage of career service centers (Fouad et al., 2006). However, there is no existing research that examines the effects of contextual barriers or efficacy (e.g. self-efficacy, career search efficacy) in conjunction with subjective norms and awareness of services on the usage of career services. This study examined …

Consumption And Dependency Of Social Network Sites As A News Medium: A Comparison Between College Students And General Population, Louisa Ha, Kisung Yoon, Xiaoqun Zhang
School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications
This exploratory study investigates social network sites (SNS) users’ time allocation behavior among various traditional and new media. Specifically, it examines the difference in degree of dependency on SNS between the young generation and the general population as a new form of news medium based on the media system dependency (MSD) and the microeconomic consumption (MEC) theories. The research results reveal that SNS, along with other online media, such as online audio/video news, are the preferred news sources for young people and they are more likely to be interested in soft news than hard news. SNS has become online users’ …

Objective: Past research has identified increases in national income and urbanization as key drivers of the global obesity epidemic. That work further identified educational attainment and urban residence as important moderators of the effects of national income. However, such work has tended to assume that children and adults respond in the same way to these factors. In the present paper, we evaluate how the socio-economic and country-level factors associated with obesity differ between children and their mothers. Design: We modelled the associations between maternal education, country-level income and urban residence with mother's and children's weight status. Setting We analysed ninety-five …

Father’S Contributions To Housework And Childcare And Parental Aggravation Among First-Time Parents, Alfred Demaris, Annette Mahoney, Kenneth A. Pargament
Sociology Faculty Publications
This study investigated the associations between fathers’ contributions to housework and childcare and both spouses’ parenting aggravation. It was hypothesized that greater father contributions to domestic labor would be associated with more paternal aggravation but less maternal aggravation. Data are from a four-wave study of 178 married couples undergoing the transition to first parenthood. Dyadic growth-curve models revealed gender differences in aggravation trajectories over the first year of the child’s life. Fathers were higher in initial aggravation but mothers’ aggravation grew at a faster rate over time. The primary hypothesis was only partially supported. Fathers’ contributions to childcare were associated …
