Approaches For Beach Safety And Education In Ghana: A Case Study For Developing Countries With A Surf Coast, Cara E. Hammerton, Robert W. Brander, Nicholas Dawe, Craig Riddington, Roger Engel Aug 2013

Approaches For Beach Safety And Education In Ghana: A Case Study For Developing Countries With A Surf Coast, Cara E. Hammerton, Robert W. Brander, Nicholas Dawe, Craig Riddington, Roger Engel

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Beach drowning in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC’S) like the west African nation of Ghana, is a poorly understood problem. A physical site assessment of the Ghana coast was undertaken to determine beach types, hazards, and the potential for implementing community surf education and lifeguarding services. A questionnaire survey was administered to 346 participants in coastal regions providing information related to beach drowning. Results demonstrated that a significant number of drownings occur on this wave-dominated coastline, particularly on public holidays, with 82% of participants knowing someone who had drowned. Ignorance of the rip current hazard was evident with 37% of …

Vertical Head Velocity During Worst-Case Scenario Swim Starts, Joel M. Stager, Andrew C. Cornett, Hiroki Naganobori Aug 2013

Vertical Head Velocity During Worst-Case Scenario Swim Starts, Joel M. Stager, Andrew C. Cornett, Hiroki Naganobori

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The potential for injury exists during the execution of a competitive swim start if an athlete contacts the pool bottom. The aim of the study was to provide vertical head velocities (VHV) at predetermined water depths when competitive swimmers perform worst-case scenario swim starts. A total of 22 swimmers performed starts from a standard starting block into a diving well with a water depth of 3.66 m. The starts were considered worst-case because the swimmers were asked to modify their typical start trajectory by traveling directly towards the pool bottom. VHV was 3.67 ± 0.66 m⋅s-1 at a water …

Indoor Waterpark: An Examination Of Physical Activity Levels And Use Patterns Of Youth Participants, William D. Ramos, Craig M. Ross

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study examined patterns and levels of physical activity of youth participants at an indoor waterpark in rural southern Indiana. The System for Observing Play and Recreation (SOPARC) was the instrument used to guide data collection for the study to determine youth physical activity postures coded as sedentary, walking, or vigorous. Subjects consisted of youths, ages 4 to18, who attended the park during the period of data collection. Results converged into seven main target areas representing data for age groupings, gender and physical activity postures. Frequencies were calculated for variables involving counts and moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). A series of …

Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Aging Population, Lori A. Sherlock, W. Guyton Hornsby, Jr., James Rye Aug 2013

Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Aging Population, Lori A. Sherlock, W. Guyton Hornsby, Jr., James Rye

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Neurocognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, is considered to be the world’s fastest growing disease (Alzheimer's Association, 2011). Due to this escalation, research focused on determining causes, accelerants, impeding factors, and preventative strategies has become a focus of interest within the field. One of the principal points of study is the role that exercise plays in the maintenance or fortification against neurocognitive decline. Though there is a robust library of research focused on the effects of land-based exercise on cognitive function, currently there is no research that discusses the impact of aquatic-based exercise on these parameters. …

Equine-Assisted Therapy And Mindfulness: A Potential Correlation, Erin Caskey Aug 2013

Equine-Assisted Therapy And Mindfulness: A Potential Correlation, Erin Caskey

Honors Projects

Equine-Assisted Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses horses to connect to people (Klontz, Bivens, Leinart, & Klontz, 2007). Clients of all ages with a variety of different reasons for seeking out this type of treatment have benefitted in many ways, including learning to trust and to be confident. A second therapeutic modality, mindfulness, is often a type of meditation based on focusing fully on the present moment (Niemiec, 2012). Researchers consider the term “mindfulness” to be synonymous with “awareness (Miller, Fletcher, & Kabat-Zinn, 1995).” It can also be a “state of being” and it has been found be …

Surfing Injuries Requiring First Aid In New Zealand, 2007-2012, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber Aug 2013

Surfing Injuries Requiring First Aid In New Zealand, 2007-2012, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In an island nation such as New Zealand with easy access to surf beaches, surfing activities are very popular and, while generally perceived as a healthy form of outdoor recreation, they do have attendant risks. This study reports on nondrowning, surfing-related incidents that required medical first aid on beaches during five summer seasons from 2007-2012. Retrospective descriptive analysis of data from lifeguard first aid reports found that 16% (n = 1,327) of injuries were the consequence of surfing activity. More males than females were treated for surfing injuries (68% male, 31% female). Lacerations (59%) and bruising (15%) accounted for most …

Unobtrusive Observation Of Caregiver-Child Pairs At Public Pools And Playgrounds: Implications For Child Unintentional Injury Risk, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich Aug 2013

Unobtrusive Observation Of Caregiver-Child Pairs At Public Pools And Playgrounds: Implications For Child Unintentional Injury Risk, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study aimed to determine and compare the nature of supervision children received in two settings that have different levels of environmental risk, an aquatic setting (public pools) and a non-aquatic setting (playground). An observational design was implemented to examine caregiver and child behaviors at six indoor public pools and four playgrounds. Chi-square tests of homogeneity were conducted to determine associations between caregiver and child variables. Pre-school children received significantly higher levels of supervision than school aged children in both settings. For school aged children the level of supervision varied between settings, with children significantly more likely to be unsupervised …

Large-Scale Network Organization In The Avian Forebrain: A Connectivity Matrix And Theoretical Analysis, Verner Peter Bingman, Murray Shanahan, Toru Shimizu, Martin Wild, Onur Güntürkün

Psychology Faculty Publications

Many species of birds, including pigeons, possess demonstrable cognitive capacities, and some are capable of cognitive feats matching those of apes. Since mammalian cortex is laminar while the avian telencephalon is nucleated, it is natural to ask whether the brains of these two cognitively capable taxa, despite their apparent anatomical dissimilarities, might exhibit common principles of organization on some level. Complementing recent investigations of macro-scale brain connectivity in mammals, including humans and macaques, we here present the first large-scale "wiring diagram" for the forebrain of a bird. Using graph theory, we show that the pigeon telencephalon is organized along similar …
