Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith Mar 2013

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Conflict minerals are becoming a significant concern in the international community (as seen in the passage of legislature regulating and addressing them such as America’s Dodd Frank Act). Through the efforts of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and grassroots organizations (among others), Africa’s conflict minerals are receiving an ever increasing amount of attention. Though conflict minerals are mined in a variety of nations around the world, one nation that is endowed with all four minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold) discussed in this paper is the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Along with being a nation highly endowed with …

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman Mar 2013

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Recently, northern Nigeria is attracting global media attention, albeit negatively, on issues which border on leadership failure, ethno-religious conflicts, youth unemployment and official corruption. The attendant poverty in the region has created a climate of frustration and disillusionment on the part of the citizens, which, together with similar problems in other parts of Nigeria, are transmuting into threats to corporate existence. The hydra-headed phenomenon of Boko Haram, for instance, is for all intents and purposes a product of multifaceted social problems. To worsen the case, there appears to be complete failure of imagination going by the way in which both …

Enhancing The Relevance And Effectiveness Of Water Safety Education For Ethnic And Racial Minorities, Matias Ignacio Golob, Audrey R. Giles, Kyle M. Rich Feb 2013

Enhancing The Relevance And Effectiveness Of Water Safety Education For Ethnic And Racial Minorities, Matias Ignacio Golob, Audrey R. Giles, Kyle M. Rich

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In this paper we explore the ways in which culturally based beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours influence participation in and the development and delivery of water safety education programs. We examine existing data pertaining to ethnic and racial minorities’ drowning rates and argue that these groups’ high rates of drowning are related to a failure to understand and account for non-Eurocentric beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, and issues of social exclusion. We then summarize health communication strategies and provide real-life examples of these strategies at work in water safety education. Finally, we identify four overarching promising practices to enhance the relevance and …

Too Much Puff, Not Enough Push? Surf Lifeguard Simulated Cpr Performance, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber Feb 2013

Too Much Puff, Not Enough Push? Surf Lifeguard Simulated Cpr Performance, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this paper is to report on the technical competency of volunteer surf lifeguards to perform CPR on a manikin in light of their lifeguard experience, age, and gender. The CPR skills of surf lifeguards on patrol at the beginning of the 2010-11 summer season were tested on manikins by observation of CPR procedures and electronic recording of compression and ventilation skills. Almost all lifeguards (n=252) made the appropriate initial checks for responsiveness (98%). Compression skills were generally performed accurately with few technical errors (such as incomplete release). Most lifeguards (87%) over-ventilated the lungs (> 600ml) on each …

"Swim For Health": Program Evaluation Of A Multiagency Aquatic Activity Intervention In The United Kingdom, Adam B. Evans, Mike Sleap Feb 2013

"Swim For Health": Program Evaluation Of A Multiagency Aquatic Activity Intervention In The United Kingdom, Adam B. Evans, Mike Sleap

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study represents a program evaluation of "Swim for Health": a multiagency partnership in two local authorities in the United Kingdom that sought to increase aquatic activity participation among four target groups. A theory-driven, scientific program evaluation model was used to assess if the program achieved its stated aims (Rossi et al 2003). Chronological records were maintained. Participation figures were collected and triangulated with 20 semistructured interviews with program stakeholders. Barriers to program implementation included a lack of prior needs-analysis of service provision and the goals of the program did not always match those of stakeholders. However, Swim for Health …

Brain Gym In The Pool, Susan J. Grosse Feb 2013

Brain Gym In The Pool, Susan J. Grosse

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Brain gym is both a concept and a trademark commercial program. Exercising the body can provide numerous benefits to the brain and exercising the brain can easily be incorporated into aquatics. This article identifies key concepts of brain gym in both contexts. More importantly, this article will provide practical information on why and how brain gym activities can be integrated into aquatic programming. For individuals with disabilities, as well as for individuals in regular aquatic instruction and/or exercise programs, brain gym activities have the potential to enrich aquatic experiences. Resources are provided for additional detailed information.

Burning The Candle At Both Ends: Extramarital Sex As A Precursor Of Marital Disruption, Alfred Demaris Jan 2013

Burning The Candle At Both Ends: Extramarital Sex As A Precursor Of Marital Disruption, Alfred Demaris

Sociology Faculty Publications

This study examines several aspects of the association between engaging in extramarital sex and the disruption of one’s marriage. Panel data on 1621 respondents followed from 1980 – 2000 in the Marital Instability Over the Life Course survey were utilized to answer these questions. Interval-censored Cox regression analysis revealed several noteworthy findings. As previously found in earlier analyses with these data, reports of problems due to extramarital involvement were strongly related to marital disruption, even holding constant the quality of the marriage. Although men were about three times more likely to be the cheating spouse, there was no difference in …
