Differences In Drowning Rates Between Rural And Non-Rural Residents Of Ontario, Canada, Michael Fralick, Zane R. Gallinger, Stephen W. Hwang Nov 2013

Differences In Drowning Rates Between Rural And Non-Rural Residents Of Ontario, Canada, Michael Fralick, Zane R. Gallinger, Stephen W. Hwang

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The objective of our study was to determine if rural residence was associated with an increased risk of drowning in Ontario, Canada. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all unintentional drowning deaths in Ontario Canada from 2004 to 2008. Age-adjusted mortality rates for males and females living in rural and non-rural areas were calculated using direct standardization, with non-rural residents as the reference population. We identified a total of 564 unintentional drowning deaths. The majority (89%) of fatal drowning victims were male, and 75% percent of victims were from non-rural area. Excluding bathtub drowning deaths, the age-adjusted drowning mortality …

Aquatic Exercise Compared To Contrast Therapy With Shallow Water Treadmill Running To Assist Recovery In Elite Australian Rules Footballers, Kate Hoskin, Karen Dodd, Siew-Pang Chan, Sam Rosengarten, Sophie Heywood Nov 2013

Aquatic Exercise Compared To Contrast Therapy With Shallow Water Treadmill Running To Assist Recovery In Elite Australian Rules Footballers, Kate Hoskin, Karen Dodd, Siew-Pang Chan, Sam Rosengarten, Sophie Heywood

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this pilot exploratory study was to determine any immediate effects of a session of aquatic exercise (AE) compared to contrast therapy shallow water treadmill running (CSWR). Twenty-nine elite footballers were allocated randomly to AE or CSWR, 48 hours after a practice match. Outcome measures included maximum vertical jump height; visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain; the squeeze test for adductor strength, sit and reach test, plus ankle and hip range of movement. A significant difference between groups was found for maximum vertical jump height with the AE group being able to jump higher after the intervention (95% …

Readiness To Rescue: Bystander Perceptions Of Their Capacity To Respond In A Drowning Emergency, Kevin Moran, Teresa Stanley Nov 2013

Readiness To Rescue: Bystander Perceptions Of Their Capacity To Respond In A Drowning Emergency, Kevin Moran, Teresa Stanley

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

From 1980-2012, 81 persons drowned in New Zealand while attempting to rescue others. Of these, most (80%) were male, and all rescue fatalities occurred in open waters. Festivalgoers (N = 415) attending a cultural event in Auckland, New Zealand took part in a water safety survey that included information on their readiness to respond in a drowning emergency. Many indicated they would jump in and rescue a victim (47%), less than one third (30%) would get flotation to the victim. Significantly more males responded that they would jump in and rescue (males 55%, females 40%). Most (62%) estimated that they …

Quantification Of Aquatic Interventions In Children With Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Baiba Kārkliņa, Marlies Declerck, Daniel J. Daly Nov 2013

Quantification Of Aquatic Interventions In Children With Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Baiba Kārkliņa, Marlies Declerck, Daniel J. Daly

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The objective of the current study was to quantify and summarize the various aquatic interventions in children with disabilities, including studies of all levels of evidence. Forty-five intervention studies were included and were described within nine disability groups. The largest number of articles was found in the groups of “diseases and disabilities of the nervous system” (N = 15) and “mental and behavioral disorders” (N = 15). Swimming or aquatic interventions in children with sensory system and integration deficits, circulatory system problems, and congenital malformations, and chromosomal abnormalities did not reveal any published literature. The categorization of aquatic interventions was …

The Lifesaving Foundation, John Connolly

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of this educational article is to provide a historical overview of a small charity called The Lifesaving Foundation. The Foundation is based in Ireland, has an international membership, and supports the development of lifesaving in countries in Africa and Asia. It aims to reduce the number of drowning deaths worldwide by supporting and conducting drowning prevention-related research, organizing a regular research conference to disseminate the latest drowning prevention and rescue research, publishing water safety and drowning prevention information and financially supporting water safety-related projects in low and middle income countries.

Effectiveness Of Aquatic Physiotherapy In Clinical Practice, Jacqueline Pattman, Jane Hall, Eirwen Record Nov 2013

Effectiveness Of Aquatic Physiotherapy In Clinical Practice, Jacqueline Pattman, Jane Hall, Eirwen Record

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Current healthcare provision demands evidence of clinical effectiveness. Since 2007, The Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile (MYMOP2) questionnaire has been used in the Aquatic Physiotherapy (AP) Department at the Brighton and Sussex Universitiy Hospitals NHS trust since 2007. This service evaluation presents a snapshot of pre- and post- MYMOP2 scores for a 3-month period. All patients (n = 125) attending for AP between January and March 2012 completed a MYMOP2 before and after treatment. AP was given as per Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Physiotherapists Guidance on Good practice in Hydrotherapy. The MYMOP2 Profile score was calculated from the mean …

An Exploration Of Crime By Policewomen, Philip M. Stinson, Natalie E. Todak, Mary Dodge Oct 2013

An Exploration Of Crime By Policewomen, Philip M. Stinson, Natalie E. Todak, Mary Dodge

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The current study explores criminal conduct by policewomen. This information is increasingly relevant as police departments hire more women, especially if the crimes committed by policewomen differ from those of policemen. News searches identified 105 cases depicting arrests of policewomen. A content analysis was performed. Findings indicate differences exist between crimes committed by policemen and policewomen, as well as by policewomen and women in general. Crime by policewomen is most often profit-motivated. Policewomen had fewer years of service and lower ranks, committed less violent crimes, and were more likely to receive suspensions for off-duty crimes compared to their male peers.

Multianalyte Sensing Of Addictive Over-The-Counter (Otc) Drugs, Tsuyoshi Minami, Nina A. Esipenko, Ali Akdeniz, Ben Zhang, Lyle Isaacs, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Oct 2013

Multianalyte Sensing Of Addictive Over-The-Counter (Otc) Drugs, Tsuyoshi Minami, Nina A. Esipenko, Ali Akdeniz, Ben Zhang, Lyle Isaacs, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A supramolecular sensor array composed of two fluorescent cucurbit[n]uril-type receptors (probe 1 and probe 2) displaying complementary selectivities was tested for its ability to detect and quantify drug-related amines. The fluorimetric titration of the individual probes showed highly variable and cross-reactive analyte-dependent changes in fluorescence. An excellent ability to recognize a variety of analytes was demonstrated in qualitative as well as quantitative assays. Importantly, a successful quantitative analysis of several analytes of interest was achieved in mixtures and in human urine. The throughput and sensitivity surpass those of the current state-of-the-art methods that usually require analyte solid-phase extraction …
