Contradictions Of Adolescent Self-Construal: Examining The Interaction Of Ethnic Identity, Self-Efficacy And Academic Achievement, Margaret Zoller Booth, Sara Abercrombie, Christopher J. Frey
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This research examines the relationship between ethnicity, ethnic identity, self-efficacy, and academic achievement within a multi-ethnic mid-sized city in the US Midwest. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, middle and high school adolescents (Fall, N=482; Spring, N=392) were surveyed and interviewed over the course of one year to investigate the interaction of these variables within the context of their school climate. Quantitative analysis indicated that prior Math achievement and ethnic identity predicted self efficacy. The qualitative results support this finding, indicating that for some minority groups, a strong ethnic identity may be a protective factor in efficacy development. The complexity of the …

"I Have Shakespeare In My Blood": Reading Intervention With Middle School Boys, Leah Guenther
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This research investigates the impact of teaching Shakespeare to below-grade-level readers in an English Language Arts classroom on Chicago’s South Side. The students studied are five middle school boys who were observed over a two-year course of study under the same teacher who, after finding success with this method, found herself asking, how is it that underperforming readers were able to make their way into such complicated text? In fact, by the end of the two years, all were reading at or far above grade level. The study argues that focusing on students’ strengths, teacher choice, and using the classics, …
High Achievers From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: The Critical Role Of Disciplinary Climate And Grit, Haigen Huang, Hao Zhu
High Achievers From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: The Critical Role Of Disciplinary Climate And Grit, Haigen Huang, Hao Zhu
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The purpose of this study was to examine whether school disciplinary climate and grit predicted low socioeconomic status (SES) students being high achievers in mathematics and science with a representative sample of 15-year-old students in the United States. Our analysis, using a two-level logistic hierarchical linear model (HLM), indicated both disciplinary climate and grit were significantly associated with low-SES students’ high achievement in math and science. Low-SES students who perceived themselves as having a higher level of grit and whose classrooms had better disciplinary climate were much more likely to be high achievers. This finding provided supplemental evidence to the …
Special Education Paraprofessionals In District Context, Craig Howley, Aimee Howley, Deborah Telfer
Special Education Paraprofessionals In District Context, Craig Howley, Aimee Howley, Deborah Telfer
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This survey research investigated the experience of Ohio districts using paraprofessionals assigned to special education students. This study provides a unique statewide description of district experience. Based on themes from the literature and preliminary conversations with educational practitioners in Ohio, the survey conceptualized district experience in five domains: role definition, assignment, supervision, training, and pay. Survey respondents (n = 184) included district superintendents and staff from Educational Service Centers and State Support Teams. Findings, overall, suggest that districts confront challenges in even defining the role of paraprofessional, and that assignment, supervision, and training are often haphazard in Ohio districts; furthermore, …

Visual Tools For Eliciting Connections And Cohesiveness In Mixed Methods Research, Jaclyn M. Murawska, David A. Walker
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In this commentary, we offer a set of visual tools that can assist education researchers, especially those in the field of mathematics, in developing cohesiveness from a mixed methods perspective, commencing at a study’s research questions and literature review, through its data collection and analysis, and finally to its results. This expounds upon the ideas and methodological insights relating to research connections and structure presented by other scholars (e.g., Creswell, 2009; Heid & Blume, 2011; Mertens, 2010; Thanheiser, Ellis, & Herbel-Eisenmann, 2012). As faculty who work with graduate students in education, we have found that these visual tools help students …

How Do Softball Athletes Construct The Media?, Brittany Lastrapes-Thackery
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
The media serves as an extremely important source for many Americans to get information. Mediated sports are extremely popular in today’s society, and commercial sports even have more influence over the press than daily news. The relationship between sports and the media can be seen as a type of partnership (Stead, 2002). When it comes to sporting events, viewers become extremely invested in the games and the athletes that they are watching. Many athletes are forced to give interviews right before games or after heartbreaking loses whether they want to or not. Despite how often sporting events and athlete interviews …
Reaction Time As A Measure Of Neuroplasticity After Aerobic Exercise, Ahmed Mostafa
Reaction Time As A Measure Of Neuroplasticity After Aerobic Exercise, Ahmed Mostafa
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Until the 1960s it was commonly-assumed in neuropsychology that the adult human nervous system was hard-wired and had extremely limited capacity to change. Recently research has demonstrated that this earlier assumption was not accurate and that the adult human nervous system indeed is quite plastic and in a state of continuous change. Further, physical exercise has been demonstrated to promote positive effects on the adult human nervous system as a result of increased blood flow and modified neurotransmitters and neutrophins. These effects are hypothesized to improve the synaptic connectivity and promote neurogenesis, both of which are believed to play an …

Twenty-six Japanese women (70.5 yr) self-selected water exercise (WEX) (n=13), or control (CON) (n=13) for 12 weeks. WEX was performed 60-minutes/day, 3 days/week with warm-up, cool-down stretch, ADL exercises, and cardiovascular/muscular endurance in 30°C water at a xiphoid level depth. CON continued their current activity/nutrition patterns. Compared to CON, WEX improved (p<.05) functional fitness and balance measures including arm curl (22%), chair stand (21%), 8-feet up & go (13%), chair sit/reach (50%), and 12-min walk (15%). No significant changes in sway velocity (SV) or limits of stability (LOS) were seen for either group. This shallow water exercise improved land-based ADL for older women but not balance. ADL tasks associated with balance did improve which may have indicated enhanced motor control.

Correctional facilities have a discernible "social climate," or collection of contextual properties that derive from perceptions of both staff and prisoners. These properties include the physical, organizational, social, and emotional characteristics of correctional institutions. Ohio's Correctional Institution Inspection Committee (CIIC) requested research assistance to assess the validity of their adult and youth surveys, which are administered during the CIIC's regular inspections of facilities. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of these instruments and the process by which they are administered. The study builds on the existing line of research on prison social climate surveys.

Video Modeling For Social Communication In Adults With Asd, Haley Ann Altman
Honors Projects
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can experience significant difficulty and psychosocial toll as a result of their impairments in social communication. Specifically for adults, this can have a negative effect on relationships and vocational stability. However, there is a lack of effective intervention for adults with ASD to assist in learning these social conventions. Video modeling is an intervention that has potential to help these individuals learn to be successful in social problem-solving situations. A pilot feasibility study (Hewitt & Kelliher, n.d.) was conducted to investigate the intervention of video modeling for adults with ASD. Coding was then necessary …

The Unfortunate Role Of Farm Subsidies As A Stimulus For Inequality And Obesity, Neil M. Browne, Facundo Bouzat, Justin Rex, Joseph Seipel
Economics Faculty Publications
Governmental expenditures are directed at a particular objective, but their effects have consequences far beyond the named target of the expenditures. Specific farm subsidies, for example, encourage consumption of particular foods by reducing the costs of producing these foods. To what extent do these subsidies affect the American obesity epidemic? How do the subsidies create disparate negative effects on those in poverty? Exploring these questions stimulates us to take greater care when designing legislation to take a broader look at the stakeholders affected by any particular governmental expenditure.
