European Colonialism And The Formation Of New African Identity, Isha Nabay
European Colonialism And The Formation Of New African Identity, Isha Nabay
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
European colonialism left a devastating effects on Africa. The exploitation of the vast continent began with the slave trade which robbed Africa millions of people. The abolition of the slave trade witnessed the beginning of legitimate trade, which, in turn ushered in direct European invasion, conquest and establishment of colonial rule in Africa. Under colonialism, human rights were extensively violated for decades, African kings and chiefs lost their power to European rulers who imposed their own laws and customs to keep the people of the land degraded and exploited. Some high points of European influence include the introduction of Christianity …

Parental Perceptions Of Water Competence And Drowning Risk For Themselves And Their Children In An Open Water Environment, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran Dr
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Little is known about people’s perceptions of how much swimming competency is required to provide protection from drowning, especially in open water environments where most drowning incidents occurs. This study reports on parental perceptions (n = 309) of swimming competency of themselves and their children, and parents beliefs on their safety when swimming in open water. Most parents (58%) considered themselves good/very good swimmers, although more than half (55%) considered that they could swim 25 m or less. Most parents (87%) reported that their children could swim, with more than one half (52%) believing that their child’s swimming competency …

Understanding Contributing Factors To Child Drownings In Public Pools In Australia: A Review Of National Coronial Records, Lauren A. Petrass Dr, Jennifer Blitvich
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study examined the incidence and circumstances associated with child drowning in public pools in Australia; and identified the frequency and nature of coroners’ recommendations. Retrospective case-series analysis of child (aged 0-10 years) unintentional drowning deaths in public pools were conducted based on Coronial data. A total of 12 child drownings were identified. A lack of supervision was recognized as the key contributing factor in 92% of cases, with the caregiver responsible for multiple children (83%); older children supervising younger children (17%); and a busy pool environment (25%) consistently linked with in-adequate supervision. To address drownings in public pools it …

Implications Of Animal Water Balance For Terrestrial Food Webs, Kevin E. Mccluney
Implications Of Animal Water Balance For Terrestrial Food Webs, Kevin E. Mccluney
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Recent research has documented shifts in per capita trophic interactions and food webs in response to changes in environmental moisture, from the top-down (consumers to plants), rather than solely bottom-up (plants to consumers). These responses may be predictable from effects of physiological, behavioral, and ecological traits on animal water balance, although predictions could be modified by energy or nutrient requirements, the risk of predation, population-level responses, and bottom-up effects. Relatively little work has explicitly explored food web effects of changes in animal water balance, despite the likelihood of widespread relevance, including during periodic droughts in mesic locations, where taxa may …

“Whatever It Takes To Beat Parkinson’S”: A Controversial Approach For Symptom Relief, Sondra M. Deskins
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
It is known that there is no cure for Parkinson's disease. So, physicians who treat Parkinson's patients must decide what is the best treatment option for the patients symptoms to improve their quality of life. Currently, there are pharmaceutical options for treatment, but they include adverse side effects. What if there were a way to treat patients for the side effects as well as improve the patient's symptoms? The recent commotion around the legalization of marijuana, both recreational and medicinal, has caused interest among patients and physicians. One must decide if the benefits of using marijuana as a form of …

Dancing Through Life: Dance As Physical Therapy To Prevent Falls, Salon Gegel
Honors Projects
The basis of this project was to create a series of dance-based exercise activities to be used as part of an exercise class for elderly people who are classified as fall risks. The idea was to approach exercise through a medium that was convenient and versatile for the class leader, while being comfortable and fun for participants. The activities were developed and presented over the course of the six-week P.L.A.C.E. Program, held at the Montessori School of Bowling Green. Participants met four times to take part in a guided exercise class, and enjoy other activities. At these sessions, participants were …

Variation In Arthropod Hydration Across Us Cities With Distinct Climate, Kevin E. Mccluney, Justin D. Burdine, Steven D. Frank
Variation In Arthropod Hydration Across Us Cities With Distinct Climate, Kevin E. Mccluney, Justin D. Burdine, Steven D. Frank
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Increasing evidence suggests that altered environmental conditions within cities (e.g. temperature) can have strong effects on the biology and ecology of animals. Moreover, multiple abiotic (e.g. soil moisture, distributions of water bodies) and biotic factors (e.g. plant and animal communities) may be more similar among cities in distinct climate regions as compared to outside cities. But the mechanisms behind these patterns are unclear. We suggest that animal physiological condition responds to urbanization and may become more similar with urbanization among cities. As a first attempt at assessing this possibility, we measured hydration (water content) of field-collected arthropods, across variation in …

Examining A First Grader’S Writing Through A Habermasian Lens: Implications For The Teaching And Learning Of Writing, Cheu-Jey Lee
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This paper investigates the relationship between Habermas’s theory of communicative action (TCA) and writing. It begins with a review of the features of Habermas’s TCA: validity claims, their corresponding criteria, and the ideal speech situation. Then TCA is applied in analyzing a first grader’s written notes. Finally, the implications for the teaching and learning of writing are discussed from a Habermasian perspective. This paper demonstrates the applicability of Habermas’s TCA in examining writing. It also shows how TCA informs the teaching and learning of writing.

Frank “Buck” Weeber Gymnasium has been a pillar of the suburban Detroit city River Rouge, Michigan since the 1940’s when the emphasis of athletics became established within the community. The gym is the home of 14 state championship basketball teams (13 boys, 1 girls) and many great athletes. However, in 2000 the gym along with the conjoined high school were closed down due to asbestos and poor piping in favor of a new high school across the street (Price, 2016-1017). The new gym inside the high school lacks the same prestige and luster of the “The Buck.” The purpose of …
Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns
Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Academic clustering has become an epidemic across all intercollegiate levels. Academic clustering is present when at least twenty-five percent of an athletic team, or department, is specialized in one academic area (Case, Greer, & Brown, 1987). This concept has been often examined among collegiate athletes; however, most research has been centralized on top-tier football programs and other revenue generation sports. This ignores the collective intercollegiate landscape as a whole. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the idea of academic clustering, but with a more under representative demographic. Women’s Basketball and Softball student athletes’ academic interests within the …
