Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge Of Special Education Laws, Sherri L. Horner, Alicia Mrachko, Evelyn A. O'Connor, Anastasia E. Yasik Jan 2020

Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge Of Special Education Laws, Sherri L. Horner, Alicia Mrachko, Evelyn A. O'Connor, Anastasia E. Yasik

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

As more and more children are being identified as needing special services, all teachers need to know special education laws. One hundred and thirty-eight preservice teachers answered an online survey about their knowledge and confidence level of IDEA and Section 504. Our participants, on average, did not have accurate knowledge of IDEA or Section 504 laws (overall IDEA X = 42%; 504 X = 40%). Having coursework related to IDEA and Section 504 laws did increase participants’ scores, regardless of whether they were majoring in a special education related degree or not. However, their scores were still low, basically at …

Is Counseling Ready For Rational Suicide? A Study Of Perceived Competence, Robin M. Defresne, Eric R. Baltrinic, John M. Laux, Jennifer Reynolds Jan 2020

Is Counseling Ready For Rational Suicide? A Study Of Perceived Competence, Robin M. Defresne, Eric R. Baltrinic, John M. Laux, Jennifer Reynolds

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Many counselors believe suicidal ideation in a terminally ill client can be rational (Rogers et al, 2001). One hundred and fifty-three counselors rated their perceived competence to counsel individuals who are rationally suicidal. Data were analyzed with non-parametric statistics. Findings suggest participants with more education, more years of service, and more experience with terminally ill clients rated themselves more competent to work with rationally suicidal clients. Implications for counselors and counselor educators are discussed.

National Policies: Catalyst For Teacher Preparation Program Enrollment And Completion Decline?, Christopher Engledowl, David Rutledge Jan 2020

National Policies: Catalyst For Teacher Preparation Program Enrollment And Completion Decline?, Christopher Engledowl, David Rutledge

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

There is a concerning trend in teacher preparation program enrollment and completion rates from 2000–2017, using the most recent population data available from the US Department of Education, Higher Education Act Title II State Report Card System. Authors contextualize these trends alongside national education policies, such as No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top, and the Common Core State Standards to discuss the potential of these policies as catalysts for the substantial observed declines. Using a local context in New Mexico as an example, they discuss how such policies may be impacting teacher production.

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney Rieb, James Cohen Jan 2020

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney Rieb, James Cohen

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

As the culture of the American elementary classroom continues to diversify, teachers’ practices must also evolve to best meet the needs of students, specifically, English Learners (ELs). This article encourages elementary educators to include music in their general education curriculum by highlighting the lack of music education in the classroom, which fuels the discussion for its need; discusses the historical use of language to support the impact of music on Kingergarten-6th grade speakers; and dissects the linguistic, cognitive, cultural, and social aspects of music, all of which have a positive impact on language use and development. Research findings suggest that …

Cross-Informant Agreement On Bullying And Victimization Of Middle School Students With And Without Behavioral Disorders, Jeong-Il Cho, Jo M. Hendrickson, Hyunsook Yi

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Cross-rater agreement on bullying, victimization, and related behaviors of middle school students with and without behavioral disorders (BD) was investigated. Students with BD (n = 11), their peers (n = 90), and general education teachers (n = 10) completed the Peer Relationship Survey (PRS), a non-anonymous measurement scale. The results of self-, peer-, and teacher-ratings each indicate that students with BD were seldom, if ever, identified as bullies (0%, 9%, and 0%, respectively) and that they are more often identified as victims (64%, 55%, and 55%, respectively) and bully/victims (23%, 12%, and 19%, respectively) than their peers. The level of …

Vocal Fry: Acoustics, Airflow, And Egg Analysis Of Various Types, Kiersten Mccormick, Dr. Ronald Scherer, Katherine Proctor

Honors Projects

Objective: Current studies on vocal fry at BGSU involve categorizing various types of vocal fry production (Proctor et al., 2019 ASHA conference). The objective of the current study was to characterize vocal fry types using acoustic, airflow, and electroglottographic measures. Such characterization should shed light on the physiological production of vocal fry and potential clinical understanding and intervention.

Methods/design: Three men and three women, 18-22 years old, read the Rainbow passage as well as spoke conversationally and spontaneously in a sound treated booth. The participants spoke using a microphone and an EGG system (Kay Model 6103), as well …

Functional Mobility And Balance Of College-Age Adults Before And After Trx® Suspension Training, Lindsay Rausch Jan 2020

Functional Mobility And Balance Of College-Age Adults Before And After Trx® Suspension Training, Lindsay Rausch

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

The suggestion that functional mobility and balance can be improved with targeted physical activity interventions for individuals to maintain efficient movement patterns and independence throughout the life span is the cause for many current lines of research. Understanding how muscle activation contributes to efficient movement patterns is coupled with the need to use assessment tools that can measure functional mobility and balance in an individual over time; however, the need for effective exercise intervention programs designed to improve functional mobility and balance persists throughout current research literature. The purpose of this study was to investigate how TRX® Suspension Training impacted …

Community Schools As A Sustainable Comprehensive School Reform Strategy: A Transformative Mixed Methods Perspective, Kathleen T. Provinzano, Toni A. Sondergeld, Christine M. Knaggs Jan 2020

Community Schools As A Sustainable Comprehensive School Reform Strategy: A Transformative Mixed Methods Perspective, Kathleen T. Provinzano, Toni A. Sondergeld, Christine M. Knaggs

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

There were two purposes for this transformative mixed method study with an advocacy lens: to examine (1) the implementation of community school programming in a racially and ethnically diverse, high-poverty urban school and (2) the impact of implementation on student achievement. In-depth interviews, along with achievement data from two cohorts of students were analyzed separately and integrated during interpretation. Findings indicate adjusting existing leadership structures disrupted fixed boundaries between school and community, broadened school-level decision-making, and enhanced students’ academic performance. A new community school development model that is both contextually responsive and localized is also proposed.

Growth In The Amount Of Literature Reviewed In A Meta-Analysis And Reviewer Resources, Michael Harwell Jan 2020

Growth In The Amount Of Literature Reviewed In A Meta-Analysis And Reviewer Resources, Michael Harwell

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Accurate and consistent reviews of documents describing research studies are essential to valid and generalizable inferences in a meta-analysis. Traditionally a small number of reviewers screen studies using the title, abstract, and possibly the full text to determine a study's eligibility for a meta-analysis. This study explores whether reviewing loads and resources to support accurate and consistent reviewing have increased over time. A survey of N = 193 meta-analyses published between 1980 – 2019 showed that the average number of documents reviewed has increased, especially since 2010, but the typical number of reviewers has not changed over the past 40 …

When Preparation Matters: A Mixed Method Study Of In-Service Teacher Preparation To Serve English Learners, Sung-Ae Kim, Trish Morita-Mullaney Jan 2020

When Preparation Matters: A Mixed Method Study Of In-Service Teacher Preparation To Serve English Learners, Sung-Ae Kim, Trish Morita-Mullaney

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In this mixed methods study, we examine the role of self-efficacy in relationship to inservice teachers’ capacities to serve English learners (ELs) based on their years of teaching experience, professional development preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL) licensure. Through the use of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, findings demonstrate that teachers with high levels of preparation and related English as a second language (ESL) licensure have the highest levels of efficacy and are able to address the needs of ELs within their curriculum selection, instructional differentiation and interpretation of classroom-based assessments. In contrast, those that only have episodic ESL …

Changing The Story: Evaluation Results Of An Opioid Awareness Teach-In, Kerri Lynn Knippen, Kristina N. Lavenia, Melissa W. Burek Jan 2020

Changing The Story: Evaluation Results Of An Opioid Awareness Teach-In, Kerri Lynn Knippen, Kristina N. Lavenia, Melissa W. Burek

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Teach-Ins have historically been used as a way for educators to raise knowledge and awareness around an urgent social problem. We report findings from an action evaluation of the Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Opioid Awareness Teach-In, which was designed to (a) make clear that the BGSU community believes we can work to change the story of the opioid epidemic in northwest Ohio and (b) raise awareness of resources available for those struggling with opioid dependence in our community. Campus wide, anonymous questionnaires administered to students, faculty, and staff before (n = 275) and after (n = 140) the Teach-In …

Academic Service-Learning: Current Findings And Future Directions, Niall Hegarty, John Angelidis

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper seeks to provide university administrators and faculty who may be considering the implementation of Academic Service Learning (ASL) with a comprehensive 360 degree viewpoint so as to aid in the decision making of whether ASL may be appropriate as a learning tool for their particular college or university. The article does this by exploring the research literature on Academic Service Learning (ASL) and identifies the prevalent streams of current research. The initial stream deals with the reasons and evolution for the creation of academic service-learning. Further streams of research identify factors that make academic programs a success, reveals …

On "Being There" In A Pandemic: Are Classrooms Without Bodies Still "Real" Places Of Learning?, Lauren Angelone Jan 2020

On "Being There" In A Pandemic: Are Classrooms Without Bodies Still "Real" Places Of Learning?, Lauren Angelone

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In March 2020, schools and universities were abruptly shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Just as abruptly as they shut down, they were moved to fully online instruction. It was and continues to be an adjustment from classrooms with bodies to online classrooms without bodies, and now in-person classrooms with distanced masked bodies, or some combination of the two. As such, a discourse has appeared decrying the absence of what we know was the “real” educational environment. In this commentary, I use a series of vignettes to illuminate the ontological and epistemological dilemma of this discourse and then bring …
