Initial Reliability And Validity For The Critical Hire® - Screen, Tony Tatman, Matthew T. Huss Mar 2020

Initial Reliability And Validity For The Critical Hire® - Screen, Tony Tatman, Matthew T. Huss

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Although the use of integrity testing during the application process has become a frequent practice in general business settings, their use has been rather nonexistent in the field of corrections. This limited use may stem from a lack of awareness about integrity tests in corrections, as well as a lack of integrity measures that have been normed and validated for use with correctional applicants. This study outlines the development, reliability, and validity for the Critical Hire®-Screen (CH-S), an overt integrity assessment measure developed for probation, parole, and other correctional officer job applicants. Four separate studies were conducted and provide evidence …

The Mangroves Of Costa Rica, Kylie Stewart

Honors Projects

Mangroves are a type of coastal vegetation present in the intertidal zone of tropical and subtropical climates. This paper explores the mangroves of Costa Rica, their significance, and various strategies the country utilizes in order to protect mangrove forests. Several books and articles about mangroves and conservationism are examined to explain why mangrove forests are vital to a coastline’s health and growth. The scholarly topic pertains to mangroves located in the United States and Costa Rica along with methods used to maintain the wildlife that live within them. The concept of ecotourism will be explored and how mangrove forests are …

Examining Group Differences In Emotion Regulation Strategies And The State And Trait Anxiety Of Lifeguards And Non-Lifeguards In A Real-World Precompetitive Situation, Hannah Calverley, Dr Paul Davis, Dr Jack Harvey, Dr Christopher Mesagno

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences, between swimmer-lifeguards and swimmer-non-lifeguards, in trait and state anxiety and emotion regulation techniques in a real-life precompetitive situation with a secondary focus on gender differences. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Sport Anxiety Scale – 2 and the Mental Readiness Form – 3 were distributed to 100 participants at university swimming competitions in the United Kingdom. Swimmer-lifeguards displayed significantly lower cognitive (p=.03) and somatic state (p=.05) anxiety and cognitive trait anxiety (p=.02) than swimmer-non-lifeguards. Males reported significantly lower levels of cognitive and somatic trait anxiety (ppp=.01); no …

Statin Drugs Plus Th1 Cytokines Potentiate Apoptosis And Ras Delocalization In Human Breast Cancer Lines And Combine With Dendritic Cell-Based Immunotherapy To Suppress Tumor Growth In A Mouse Model Of Her-2 Disease, Crystal M. Oechsle, Loral E. Showalter, Colleen M. Novak, Brain J. Czerniecki, Gary K. Koski

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A dendritic cell-based, Type 1 Helper T cell (Th1)-polarizing anti-Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-2 (HER-2) vaccine supplied in the neoadjuvant setting eliminates disease in up to 30% of recipients with HER-2-positive (HER-2) ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). We hypothesized that drugs with low toxicity profiles that target signaling pathways critical for oncogenesis may work in conjunction with vaccine-induced immune effector mechanisms to improve efficacy while minimizing side effects. In this study, a panel of four phenotypically diverse human breast cancer lines were exposed in vitro to the combination of Th1 cytokines Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) and lipophilic …

Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis Jan 2020

Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Some archives have been quick to respond to the crisis in audio preservation brought on by the combined forces of obsolescence and degradation inherent in legacy audio formats and their playback equipment. These archives have undertaken digitization projects for particular collections or, in a few cases, have digitized the bulk of their audio holdings for preservation. Based on an examination of the literature on audio preservation, however, the responses of some institutions—particularly small and midsized institutions—have been stymied by roadblocks related to cost and expertise. Given the limited time available for archives to migrate audio content, this uneven response threatens …

Succeeding At Your Internship: A Handbook Written For And With Students, Christopher J. Mruk, John C. Moor Jan 2020

Succeeding At Your Internship: A Handbook Written For And With Students, Christopher J. Mruk, John C. Moor

Open Educational Resources

There are several textbooks for students whose majors include internships in human services, broadly defined, such as case management, counseling, criminal justice, and social work. Most of these books are written in an academic format. Typically, it involves an introduction to a theoretical orientation that concerns working with others followed by a series of chapters devoted to learning professional skills associated with a given discipline. This approach is fine, as far as it goes, but also has two drawbacks. One is that the texts are usually sold by main stream publishers, which means they are expensive. Another is that they …

Evaluating The Impact Of An Assessment Course On Preservice Teachers’ Classroom Assessment Literacy And Self-Efficacy, Lance Kruse, Whitney Impellizeri, Claire E. Witherel, Toni A. Sondergeld Jan 2020

Evaluating The Impact Of An Assessment Course On Preservice Teachers’ Classroom Assessment Literacy And Self-Efficacy, Lance Kruse, Whitney Impellizeri, Claire E. Witherel, Toni A. Sondergeld

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

While educational policy has resulted in many teachers being responsible for developing and interpreting student growth measures, they generally lack adequate assessment literacy and feel ill-prepared to manage such tasks. This quasi-experimental study explores the impact of an applied assessment course on preservice teachers’ assessment literacy and self-efficacy, while also examining the intersection between these variables. Results indicate a significant increase in assessment literacy and self-efficacy after completing the assessment course. Assessment literacy and self-efficacy held a significantly negative relationship at pre-test and a significantly positive relationship at post-test, suggesting meta-ignorance existed regarding classroom assessment skills among preservice teachers.

Attempts At Subject Pronouns Across Assessments In Preschoolers, Lauren Riggleman Jan 2020

Attempts At Subject Pronouns Across Assessments In Preschoolers, Lauren Riggleman

Honors Projects

Young children sometimes substitute pronouns, for example, saying ‘her goes’ instead of ‘she goes.’ Seventeen four-year-olds’ use of third person pronouns (i.e. he, she, they, her, him, them) was assessed with both a formal test and an informal play-based language sample. This study compares pronoun use across the two assessment settings. The percentage of correct pronoun use was calculated from the language samples, and pronoun attempts on the formal assessment were counted. Out of the 17 children observed, ten children had perfect pronoun use on the informal assessment, and eight children attempted all pronouns in the play-based language sample. The …

Cultivating Compassion For Competition: A Psychological Skills Workbook For Irish Dancers, Hayley Smock Jan 2020

Cultivating Compassion For Competition: A Psychological Skills Workbook For Irish Dancers, Hayley Smock

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Over the past decade, research on self-compassion has grown tremendously (McGhee, Germer, & Neff, 2017). Previous findings show a wide range of benefits to being self-compassionate, including using positive coping skills to overcoming failures, increasing emotional regulation, and enhanced overall wellbeing (Neff, 2009). Similar benefits can have been found among self-compassionate athletes in sport and performance settings (Ceccarelli et al., 2019; Mosewich et al., 2019). This project introduces a guided workbook of self-compassion-based reflections and mental exercises aimed to help prepare competitive Irish dancers for performance. Competitive Irish dancers are in a sport environment and face many of the same …
