Functional movement is the ability to perform movements (e.g., deep squat, push-ups, leg lunges) requiring balance, stabilization, and basic coordination without compensation or displaying left-to-right imbalances in muscle activity or flexibility (Cook, 2010). Competent functional movement allows for the proper development of motor control and optimal adaptability to training (Cook, 2010). Participation in structured youth sports is common in American culture, but how this participation effects functional movement ability long into adulthood is yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to determine how functional movement ability, assessed by the Functional Movement Screen® (FMS), is impacted by participation …
Elementary Physical Education Field Day Manual, Erica Lipstraw
Elementary Physical Education Field Day Manual, Erica Lipstraw
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Field day to my elementary students is referred to as the best day of the school year. This is the culture we have created in my school district from running successful field days in the past. The success of field day should be measured in the physical engagement and inclusion of all student participants. The responsibility of planning and running this event is usually given to the current physical education teacher. So, how and where does a physical education teacher begin to plan this school wide event? Is this something that a teacher learns through student teaching?
In my own …

Using The Functional Movement Screen® And Y-Balance Test To Predict Injury In Division Iii Volleyball Players, Kaycee Rowe
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Volleyball participation has increased over the years; therefore, injury rates have also increased (Agel, Palmieri-Smith, Dick, Wojtys, & Marshall, 2007). An accurate pre-participation screening tool would be important to help reduce the risk of injury. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to use the Functional Movement Screen® (FMS®) and Y-Balance Test (YBT) to predict injury risk of Division III volleyball players during the competitive season. The FMS® and YBT identify functional movement limitations and imbalances that might predispose an athlete to injury (Bonazza, Onks, Silvis, & Dhawan, 2016; Cook, 2010; Cook, 2012; Lehr et al., 2013). Method: Twenty-two female …
That’S So Gay: Lgbtq+ Inclusivity And Education In Youth Sport Through Web Based Content, Caitlin Shortridge
That’S So Gay: Lgbtq+ Inclusivity And Education In Youth Sport Through Web Based Content, Caitlin Shortridge
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
LGBTQ+ youth, in sport and society, are more visible today than in years past. Athletes are coming out at earlier ages and need the support of those around them. Olympians, world champions, and elite athletes are acknowledging their identities and encouraging youth to be their authentic selves too. Though true, LGBTQ+ youth often do not feel safe in sport (Johnson et al., 2018). My goal of this project is to give youth athletes resources to better understand and include teammates who identify as LGBTQ+, making spaces safer and more inclusive for LGBTQ+ youth athletes. I created a website (https://cashort3.wixsite.com/masters2020) that …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Intrinsic Motivation On Students’ Intention To Use Mobile Devices In Language Learning, Yanyan Sun, Fei Gao
Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications
This study examines the relationships among intrinsic motivation, critical variables related to technology adoption, and students’ behavioral intention in Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). To test the hypothesized model through a path analysis, 169 survey responses were collected from undergraduate students who were foreign language learners of English in a Chinese research university. The results indicated that although intrinsic motivation did not have a direct influence on students’ behavioral intention in MALL, it had a positive influence on students’ behavioral intention through the two intervening variables, perceived usefulness and task technology fit. Perceived ease of use, however, was not associated with …

Towards A “Rescue Ready” Mindset: Can Lifeguard Teams Learn Lessons From The Attributes Of Chronic Unease?, Billy Rj Doyle, Jonathon Webber
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Highly Reliable Organisations (HROs) are safety-centric organisations that operate in complex environments alongside risky technologies and processes. There is a high risk of catastrophe and error in these settings, the consequences of which may result in loss of life, financial cost, and damage to the environment. “Chronic unease” is a concept originally adopted by Royal Dutch Shell describing a mindset that has five predictable attributes that contribute to an individual’s and organisational safety culture. The authors of this paper describe the attributes of chronic unease in the context of lifeguard operations. A case study of a dangerous and dynamic rescue …

Barriers And Opportunities For Concussion Communication And Management In Youth Sports: A Qualitative Study, Kelly Sarmiento, Zoe Donnell, Elizabeth Bell, Rosanne Hoffman
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
To identify opportunities to improve coach-athlete communication, this study examined young athletes’ perceptions and concerns about concussion, as well as their information needs. A qualitative data collection approach, based on the grounded theory methodology, was utilized. Six virtual focus groups were conducted with 17 male and female athletes’ ages 12 to 18 years. Results indicated that athletes were concerned about the potential long-term effects of a concussion. Athletes described multiple barriers that interfere with concussion reporting, including: being unfamiliar with concussion signs and symptoms, perceived pressure from teammates, concerns of interference that concussion reporting can have on gameplay, and a …

Pupil-Athletes’ Learning Dispositions And Their Potential Effects In School Sports-Situated Talent Development Programs, Anna Renström, Cecilia Stenling
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
There is a worldwide increase in efforts to support talents’ development towards elite athletes. The focus of the study was the learning processes among athletes that facilitate this development. Drawing on the learning dispositions concept (Carr & Claxton, 2002), the aim was to create knowledge on the prevalence and possible consequences of variability in learning patterns among pupils enrolled in Nationell Idrottsutbildning Fotboll (NIUF)—a highly selective soccer talent development programme within upper secondary schools in Sweden. In-depth semi-structured interviews were carried out with a total of 13 pupils in their first or second year of NIUF. The data analysis benefited …

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Developing socially responsible and civically engaged citizens has been a priority of higher education in the United States since its conception. As an extension of higher education, intercollegiate athletics has been tasked with the same objective. One method to accomplish this objective is student-athletes’ engagement in community service. With the growing amount of attention placed on community service, it is becoming increasingly important to understand student-athletes’ volunteer experiences, in order to help administrators better coordinate impactful service opportunities for student-athletes. Using functionalist theory as a framework, the purpose of this study was to assess student-athletes’ motivations to volunteer, satisfaction with …

Breaking Down Barriers: Teaching Students To Communicate Effectively, Eva Claire Coffman
Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
This portfolio explores the journey of learning English language and composition from reading to understand, to writing to be understood. A major research essay, “Truth and Lying in Dystopian Literature”, compares and contrasts the theories presented in Plato’s Republic and Friedrich Nietzsche’s “Truth and Lying in a Non-Moral Sense” with the main themes of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and George Orwell’s 1984. This essay is used to show students the importance of reading to understand the author’s intent. One teaching-based project, “I Put the AP in Happy”, explores the intricacies of teaching AP English Language and Composition by …

America is facing a serious mental health crisis, which may be an effect of increased chronic stress. Students, in particular, are vulnerable to this hazard as most face a moderate to extreme amount of stress. The programs which colleges and universities have put into place are outdated. Ineffective treatment of mental health crises leads to disastrous consequences. The present study analyzed the effects of major and grade level on stress level and sources of stress for undergraduate universities at both a large, public university and a small, private college. The author found that a student’s grade level and choice of …

Mosquito Diversity And Positive Pools For The West Nile Virus In Forested Versus Non-Forested Areas, Elizabeth C. Paul
Mosquito Diversity And Positive Pools For The West Nile Virus In Forested Versus Non-Forested Areas, Elizabeth C. Paul
Honors Projects
The West Nile virus (WNV) is one of the leading causes of mosquito borne illness in the United States (CDC, 2018). This virus is a neurotropic pathogen that can cause fever and encephalitis. It is known that the Culex species is the primary vector for WNV. Humans infected with the WNV are typically asymptomatic. There is a small portion of individuals that experience West Nile fever which could include symptoms like high fever, vision loss, and coma (CDC, 2018). Previous studies have shown that mosquitoes tend to favor forests and wetlands (Hay et al., 1998), however, it is unknown if …

Categorization Of Vocal Fry In Running Speech, Katherine Proctor
Honors Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine and categorize patterns of vocal fry in running speech. Since no other research studies have attempted to fully categorize vocal fry before, and due to the universality of the phenomenon of vocal fry, and the potential psychosocial and voice disorder consequences that come with using it, this topic is of great significance. For this study, voice samples were read into Praat and analyzed, and minor differences in the physiologies that produce different “types” of fry were examined.Temporal categories of vocal fry discovered were as follows: “onset,” “earlier,” “later,” and “final,” depending on …

Personnel Assessment and Decisions
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have seen widespread adoption by organizations seeking to identify and hire high-quality job applicants. Yet the volume, variety, and velocity of professional involvement among I-O psychologists remains relatively limited when it comes to developing and evaluating AI/ML applications for talent assessment and selection. Furthermore, there is a paucity of empirical research that investigates the reliability, validity, and fairness of AI/ML tools in organizational contexts. To stimulate future involvement and research, we share our review and perspective on the current state of AI/ML in talent assessment as well as its benefits and potential pitfalls; …
