Media Erotics & Adaptation: A Comparative Textual Analysis Of Carmilla, Rebecca Wait
Media Erotics & Adaptation: A Comparative Textual Analysis Of Carmilla, Rebecca Wait
Honors Projects
This project is concerned with understanding the different ways in which Carmilla (1872), a gothic novella, and it’s 2014 web series adaptation differently approach the same basic narrative, especially with regards to their respective representations of individuals who identify as sexual and gender minorities. One of the major functions of importance in this study was to understand the temporality and cultural conditions, which lead to the perceived need for a postmodern adaptation of a pre-modernist text. Through textual analysis, the author compared J. Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla (1872) to Jordan Hall's adaptation (2014). In this analysis, significant differences existed between …

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
“A Praxis Redefined” submitted to the English Department of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of: Master of Arts in the field of English with a specialization, in English Teaching, exemplifies a portion of the substantial research and analysis that reflects theoretical conversations in reading, visual rhetoric, linguistics, grammar, and composition that most influence my practices as an English scholar and educator. Furthermore, the analytical narrative included in this portfolio shows how participation in a variety of challenging pedagogical conversations have changed me from a theoretical outlander to theoretical compromiser. All the …

Painting Photographs: Absence On Mohammed Mahmoud Street, Kirsten Stricker
Painting Photographs: Absence On Mohammed Mahmoud Street, Kirsten Stricker
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
The Egyptian Revolution prompted an outpouring of art. It filled the streets of Cairo, a city that had lacked any street art prior to the revolution, with large murals and art of every kind. Ammar Abo Bakr says that his massive murals are not art — they are news. His works are a protest against the censorship and selective reporting of the mainstream media. Bakr is best known for his large mural on Mohammed Mahmoud Street near Tahrir Square, Cairo. The mural is massive and contains many elements. One element consists of paintings of mothers holding photographs of their children …
Rethinking The "Anonymous:" Simeon Agbetuyi And The Yoruba Example, Caroline Bastian
Rethinking The "Anonymous:" Simeon Agbetuyi And The Yoruba Example, Caroline Bastian
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
In looking at “Traditional” and “Contemporary” African Art, it is clear Western culture still struggles with recognition of the individual African artist. For example, most museum exhibitions displaying local or more continent-based African art still tend to embody a flawed sense of “traditional” art created by a culture rather than an individual. In contrast, contemporary African art stresses the importance of the singular artist, their personal style, historical context, and cultural motivation. Part of the problem stems from colonialism, when many Western “collectors” seized any art they deemed valuable and “exotic,” taking it away from context leaving behind all information …
Theories Of Space And Place In Abstract Caribbean Art, Shelby Miller
Theories Of Space And Place In Abstract Caribbean Art, Shelby Miller
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
How can one define the concepts of space and place and further translate those theories to the Caribbean region? Through abstract modes of representation, artists from these islands can shed light on these concepts in their work. Involute theories can be discussed in order to illuminate the larger Caribbean space and all of its components in abstract art. The trialectics of space theory deals with three important factors that include the physical, cognitive, and experienced space. All three of these aspects can be displayed in abstract artwork from this region. By analyzing this theory, one can understand why Caribbean artists …
A Qualitative Study On Team Awareness Of Mental Health And Their Resources, Jasmine Redman
A Qualitative Study On Team Awareness Of Mental Health And Their Resources, Jasmine Redman
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Mental health issues in student athlete populations is something that is gaining attention from the NCAA and mental health professionals. The mental health resources provided by athletic departments is not consistent across the 351 NCAA Division I universities nor mandated by the NCAA. The purpose of this study was to examine whether student athletes at a Division I university knew what their mental health resources were; if they felt that mental health was an issue that affected their team and to improve our understanding of why student athletes aren’t seeking help. 10 participants were recruited through the athletic department at …
Free To Play/Pay To Win: Consuming Competition Through Online Gaming In The Neoliberal Age, Brandon Jones
Free To Play/Pay To Win: Consuming Competition Through Online Gaming In The Neoliberal Age, Brandon Jones
Honors Projects
This project examines online gaming in the context of decades of deregulation and privatization. In the piece, I examine American culture’s infatuation with the value of competition through a historical and hegemonic scope. Throughout the piece, I make connections between online gaming and the illusion that the populace must compete for unnecessarily scarce resources. The goal of this project is to illustrate how micro-transactions in online gaming is not beneficial for the consumer, but rather coercive reinforcements of the spontaneous philosophy of competition prevalent in the Neoliberal age.

Active Learning, Primary Documents, And Complex Events: Reinvigorating History Education, Samantha Clonch
Active Learning, Primary Documents, And Complex Events: Reinvigorating History Education, Samantha Clonch
Honors Projects
History is frequently taught through lectures, tests, and individual work with primary documents, which can be exceedingly tedious for students. This is problematic because it leads to student disengagement and limited learning. Also problematic in history education is the lack of time spent teaching events which are viewed as less impactful than others on the course of history. The Louisiana Purchase is one such event. It is often taught in one day or less as an action that simply doubled the size of the United States. This project is an attempt to combat these problems. The project contains a seven …

An Unchained Analysis Of Racial Tension In America, Moriah Angott
An Unchained Analysis Of Racial Tension In America, Moriah Angott
Honors Projects
Modern race issues stem not only from the past but also from a lack of understanding and empathy for each other. How we talk about race will not only inform how we are able to move forward as a society, but it will also say a great deal about how we are evolving as human beings. It is important, and has been recognized as such, that black Americans have the freedom to grapple with that past, to understand it, and to feel connected to those ancestors who suffered in order for the foundation of this country to be built. Is …

Race And Historiography: Advancing A Critical-Realist Approach, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart
Race And Historiography: Advancing A Critical-Realist Approach, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart
Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications
This scholarly essay interrogates the seemingly necessary engagement of normative and essentialist characterizations of identity in the historical study of race in U.S. higher education. The author’s study of the experiences of Black collegians in private, liberal arts colleges in the Midwestern Great Lakes region between 1945 and 1965 grounds this discussion. Although engaging racial essentialism is necessary, the author presents alternative treatments of historicizing race to illustrate the benefits of a critical-realist approach to producing a synthetic cultural educational history.
Preservice Teachers’ Understanding Of The Language Arts: Using A Lens Of Critical Literacy, Delane Bender-Slack, Teresa Young
Preservice Teachers’ Understanding Of The Language Arts: Using A Lens Of Critical Literacy, Delane Bender-Slack, Teresa Young
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Preservice teachers are placed in educational environments to learn about teaching literacy and about literacy’s role in the English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. Of particular significance is how preservice teachers perceive and understand the varied components of language arts (i.e., reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing) while observing mentor teachers. The purpose of this research was to discover which language arts preservice teachers choose to observe during their field placements, and how that might impact the teaching of critical literacy. First, the authors situate the study in our understanding of the language arts and frame it within critical …

This descriptive study looks at the correlations between Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) data and numerous program data points, including GPA, major GPA, and benchmark assignment scores, gathered in an Early Childhood Education (ECE) program. Previous studies have looked to correlate grade point average (GPA) with pre-service teacher performance; however, correlating students’ benchmark assessment scores and student performance on edTPA has not been attempted. This study looks to determine the relationships between overall GPA, major GPA (Early Childhood Education), and edTPA performance (overall score and task scores). Relationships were also investigated between program benchmark assessments (case study, family culture project, integrated …
