Genghis Khan…The Great Wall…Gourmet Coffee? Chinese Consumption Identity And The Launch Of Starbucks In Inner Mongolia, Ruimeng Yang
Genghis Khan…The Great Wall…Gourmet Coffee? Chinese Consumption Identity And The Launch Of Starbucks In Inner Mongolia, Ruimeng Yang
Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)
This study analyzes the “Othering” process in Inner Mongolia. Using the establishment of several Starbucks stores as examples of Westernization, the study examines how young professionals in Inner Mongolia think Starbucks is ''exotic": strange and different, yet intriguing and exciting. At the same time, Starbucks is more than coffee; it is an upscale and sophisticated coffee experience with a wholly new coffee vocabulary.
This study will analyze the contexts and cultural identity markers surrounding the Starbucks brand. Existing research (Bookman, 2013; Clarke, Micken & Hart, 2002; Garner, 2005; Maguire & Hu,2015) found that global brands in China are commonly held …

Angelina Jolie’S Ovaries: Influence Of Metaphors Of The Ovary And Ovarian Cancer On Public Discourse Of Ovarian Cancer, Dinah A. Tetteh
Graduate Communication Association Conference (2015)
Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers; yet public discourse about and understanding of the disease is limited. Metaphors used to discuss the ovaries and ovarian cancer may have a role to play in the limited public discourse about the disease. In this article, I offer a critical analysis of the limited visibility for ovarian cancer in the public sphere using Angelina Jolie’s case as an example. Jolie announced in 2013 that she had had double mastectomy and may in the future remove her ovaries because of an inherited faulty BRCA1 gene and a family history of cancer. …
The Transnational Rhetoric In Cabeza De Vaca’S La Relacion, Bincy Abdul Samad
The Transnational Rhetoric In Cabeza De Vaca’S La Relacion, Bincy Abdul Samad
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Abstract on La Relacion by Cabeza de Vaca
Identity is an important concept in postcolonial literature, especially when one’s identity is achieved rather than inherent. It is interesting to pursue how Cabeza de Vaca, the protagonist of La Relacion undergoes a transformation from his initial identity as a Spanish colonizer to a transnational hybrid, the Spanish-American. Despite multiple critics’ argument that La Relacion is “a discourse of failure” that “subverts the established order,” my paper rereads the narrative as a transnationally successful rhetoric by incorporating multiculturalism and hybridity. Thus Cabeza de Vaca becomes a hero if we accept his story …

Who Cares About Their Names: Case Study In Starbucks, Emi Kanemoto, Zehui Dai
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
According to Institute of International Education report (2013), 764,495 international students enrolled in the U.S universities in 2012. The number of international students in the U.S continues growing. This study focuses on a common experience among international students on university campuses: their names are misspelled or mispronounced by cashiers or workers at on-campus coffee stores. The researchers chose a Starbucks at a Midwestern mid-size University as a site to conduct this study.
It is possible for anybody to have their name misspelled or mispronounced. Through observation and focus group, this study focuses on revealing how international students interpret the situation …
The Perpetual Other: Native American Representation In Documentaries, Julia E. Largent
The Perpetual Other: Native American Representation In Documentaries, Julia E. Largent
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
When an individual uses an Internet search engine to find images of Native Americans, the person will most likely find that most of the images are paintings of the Native American warrior or are older black and white portraits. After searching for other races, such as Asian American or African American, the search is more likely to come up with contemporary images of people playing sports, in school, or with their families. Why is there such a stark difference? Why are Native Americans so often thought about as only in the past? From the early days of books and portraits …
Popular Culture And Individual Empowerment In The Global World, Rama Alapati
Popular Culture And Individual Empowerment In The Global World, Rama Alapati
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Popular culture studies are central to the study of Liberal Arts, which enhance the spirit of the academia. They help people to understand their own culture, appreciate it, and grow up as participating members of the community. The present study focuses attention to analyze popular culture in relation to the domains of governance and self-help literature. The study is significant because it helps understand the trajectory adopted for individual empowerment.
Existence of multicultural societies across the Globe is more in the present day as the world has become a global village. It can, therefore, be understood that popular culture studies …
Christianity As A Double-Edged Sword In Colonial Africa, Brian Schmidt
Christianity As A Double-Edged Sword In Colonial Africa, Brian Schmidt
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
Christian missionaries were among the first Europeans to move into Africa. They came on a mission to save the souls of a seemingly primitive population, an attitude that was further enabled and encouraged by recently developed ethnocentric philosophies of "scientific racism." Within this social climate, missionaries not only felt obligated to assimilate Africans toward Christian religious practice, but also toward European ways of living. The result, coincidentally or not, was an undermining of African culture that is thought by many scholars to have aided in the successful takeover by colonial governments in the region. Christian virtues of passivity and humility …

A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Study: The Differences In Attitudes And Opinions On Advance Care Planning Among African, Caucasian, And Latino Americans, Jennifer Sims
International ResearchScape Journal
The purpose of this study is to identify African American and Latino Americans’ beliefs and attitudes about advance care planning (ACP) and compare these with beliefs held by Caucasian Americans. The objectives are to identify if there are differences in opinions between racial groups and to provide relevant information for health and social service providers. African American and Latino American participants in this study indicated many factors that affect their hesitation to utilize ACP services: spiritual and religious beliefs; family caregiving; and lack of knowledge about ACP services. Implications for practice include providing easy-to-understand information about ACP to clients of …

A Case Study Of A Collegiate Intersex Athlete, Campbell Colin Query
A Case Study Of A Collegiate Intersex Athlete, Campbell Colin Query
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
This study explored the experience of one collegiate intersex athlete. Grounded in a transfeminist perspective, narrative analysis was used to tell the story of the athlete’s experiences in life and in sport. The analysis revealed several themes, which are told through a series of five vignettes. The storytelling approach illustrates how the athlete negotiates the terrain between sex and gender and how her intersex condition has affected more than just her sporting experience. The themes that were pulled from the interview covered the medical side of CAH, her personal experience with CAH, how it has affected her family, her sporting …

Know Your Role: Black College Students, Racial Identity, And Performance, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart
Know Your Role: Black College Students, Racial Identity, And Performance, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart
Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications
This article is a report of a critical constructivist study of racial identity and performance among 13 Black, traditional-age students enrolled at three different colleges, two historically Black and one predominantly White. The study’s approach understood identity to be socially constructed and reliant upon community affirmation and validation. The findings highlight (1) the role of internal community pressure, (2) the ways in which racial performance dominated the students’ discussions of their racial identities, and (3) the intersection of internalized racism and sexism. The overarching conclusion points to the need for promoting acceptance of racial heterogeneity within communities of Black young …
