Conflicted: An Autoethnography On Researching The Minority Swimming Gap, Dawn M. Norwood

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In this research note, I use an autoethnographic method to undertake the task of uncomfortable reflexivity to address the intra-conflict of being a Black woman researching the minority swimming gap, who, like my research participants, struggles with hair maintenance to engage in swimming activities. My uncomfortable reflexivity moves from stages of confession, self-discovery, catharsis and a plan to incorporate deeper reflexivity in future research and other academic practices. Reflexivity in qualitative research is used as a methodological practice to give validation and legitimacy to a research study. I have great pride for the neighborhood in which I was raised – a community that, while founded in strong Polish roots, has developed into an amalgamation of culture. Growing up with a deep connection to my Polish heritage as well as my Toledo pride has compelled me to introspectively question my identity, both as an individual and within my local community. These questions of self-identity vs. “identities within communities” have roots within topics of upbringing, social clubs, education, race, gender, and inclusivity.

This research investigated the life course outcomes of respondents who have been arrested during adolescence. Although the creation of the juvenile justice system is relatively recent, only existing for 119 years, there is a need for data on the impact this system has on society. The pre-existing knowledge and literature on juvenile delinquency and the criminal justice system often fails to capture longitudinal data. Most scholars on this issue will discuss the immediate effects of things like incarceration and placement or what influences delinquency, ignoring the long-term consequences or life outcomes of those that have been arrested prior to 18. …

This research studies the National Park Service, through the Association of National Park Ranger’s newsletter/magazine Ranger. World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Caster Semenya’s body has caused a rupture within the space of international professional athletics, which is structured according to a binary conceptualization of sex and gender. This rupture created a space for international discourse about alternative ways in which sex and gender can be defined, and to reimagine the space of international professional athletics, and other binary-bound non-sport spaces, to be more inclusive. In 2014, a popular revolution led by a group of underground pop musicians ousted a 27-year regime in Burkina Faso. In attempting to find meaning in how these musicians were able to mobilize millions of people across the country under the banner of Le Balai Citoyen (the Citizen Broom), I studied their works before the 2014 revolution. I found that pop music from Burkina Faso represents a subaltern discursive engagement voice whereby lyrics and video frames disseminate a counter-discourse and call for action against government malpractices. He influenced many artists across different genres of music such as rock, funk and soul. Persons with visual impairments in Nigeria are known for making demands for access to information that suit their reading interests (Adetoro 2014). The provision of such services is rendered by public libraries (Adetoro 2010; Atinmo 2007). My paper addresses the intersections of the American popular music star system, Black female Gospel singers, Gospel Music, and the exilic consciousness of the Sanctified Church with special attention to life and music of Gospelwoman Priscilla Marie “CeCe” Winans Love. I argue that CeCe Winans and the marketing campaign for Winans’ album Let Them Fall in Love, is indicative of the encroachment of American popular music’s star system into self-elected “exiled” Gospel Music and into the lives of “exiled” Gospelwomen. With shrinking print collections and the increase in automation, technical services departments are looking for new ways to utilize their skills. Digital humanities projects offer the opportunity for technical services departments to expand their workflows while using skills they already possess. This article details Bowling Green State University’s technical services department’s project to use the digital humanities to make World War I soldiers’ letters available online using the metadata schema, Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). By partnering with special collections and increasing staff focus on metadata, the department has created a new path forward that can be replicated at other institutions.

In 2016, political polarization in the United States reached levels unprecedented in the last three decades. This paper analyzes over thirty sources in an attempt to explore the extent to which the political divide exists in the US, to discover some possible reasons for the severe polarization, and to offer a list of possible solutions to the problem, solutions that everyday citizens can enact to contribute to a more open, discursive, and respectful society where all views can be heard, respected, and where democracy can thrive. Parallels Between The U.S. And Russia: The Trump Administration, Andrew S. Langmeier

Russia has come up repeatedly in discussions of Donald Trump and the current U.S. administration. In time for the 100^th anniversary of the 1917 Russian revolution, this paper aims to describe the importance and interconnectedness of image, information, hegemony, and power by exploring connections between the U.S. and Russia. An interdisciplinary approach drawing from fields such as cultural studies, linguistics, and anthropology will be applied to selected events and actions of the Trump administration. This study provides a method of framing US political events against Russian history and contemporary reality.

Media Erotics & Adaptation: A Comparative Textual Analysis Of Carmilla, Rebecca Wait

This project is concerned with understanding the different ways in which Carmilla (1872), a gothic novella, and it’s 2014 web series adaptation differently approach the same basic narrative, especially with regards to their respective representations of individuals who identify as sexual and gender minorities. One of the major functions of importance in this study was to understand the temporality and cultural conditions, which lead to the perceived need for a postmodern adaptation of a pre-modernist text. Through textual analysis, the author compared J. Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla (1872) to Jordan Hall's adaptation (2014). In this analysis, significant differences existed between …
