The “Oil And Wine” Of A Better Kind Of Politics, Cesare Sposetti Sj
The “Oil And Wine” Of A Better Kind Of Politics, Cesare Sposetti Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This essay aims to show how the rise of populist phenomena is a contemporary “sign of the times” that the Catholic Church must attend to carefully, in order to respond adequately while drawing from the rich treasure of her social teaching, with a particular attention to Pope Francis’ last Encyclical Fratelli tutti. The application of such an approach to the current Italian context proposes a concrete analysis of and a Catholic response to populism.
The Holy Spirit As The Power Of Diversity: A Pneumatology Of Religious Pluralism, Peter C. Phan
The Holy Spirit As The Power Of Diversity: A Pneumatology Of Religious Pluralism, Peter C. Phan
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
In celebration of the quincentennial of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines, this essay discusses how religious diversity and pluralism can be reconciled with the Christian belief in Jesus as the Savior. I begin by examining the diverse ways in which the Holy Spirit works in the world according to the Hebrew Scripture, the Synoptic Gospels, Acts 2: 1-13, and Paul and by drawing on the document The Holy Spirit at Work in Asia of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. Next, the essay examines how Jesus and the Spirit function autonomously, albeit not independently, from each other by …
The Irrevocable Ecumenical Responsibility, Obligation And Commitment Of The Bishop, Nchumbonga George Lekelefac
The Irrevocable Ecumenical Responsibility, Obligation And Commitment Of The Bishop, Nchumbonga George Lekelefac
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The irrevocable commitment, urgent obligation and responsibility of the bishop to foster ecumenism in pastoral ministry today in his diocese in congruence with the Code of Canon Law 755 and the most recent document of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity entitled “The Bishop and Christian Unity: an Ecumenical Vademecum” is of primordial and utmost capital importance in the Catholic Church. This recent document on ecumenism, in congruence with the Second Vatican Council, (1962–65), the 21st ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic Church, which was convocated by Pope John XXIII on January 25, 1959, as a means of spiritual …
Pope Francis’ Scriptural Understanding Of The Nature And Implications Of God’S Mercy, Ramil Marcos
Pope Francis’ Scriptural Understanding Of The Nature And Implications Of God’S Mercy, Ramil Marcos
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Fittingly called the Pope of Mercy, Pope Francis has embraced the message of God’s mercy in his own life and ministry. He enthusiastically proclaimed this truth from the moment he began his role as universal pastor of the Catholic Church. Pope Francis celebrated the Year of Mercy with a combination of actions and words that conveyed the importance of God’s love in our personal and communal life as Christians. Pope Francis believed that the primary proclamation must be rooted in the mercy of the Father flowing through the Son and the Holy Spirit. Mercy received becomes mercy shared. People should …

New Ecological Equilibrium: A Perspective For Our Long Conversion Journey, P. Wiryono Priyotamtama Sj
New Ecological Equilibrium: A Perspective For Our Long Conversion Journey, P. Wiryono Priyotamtama Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Through the encyclical letter Laudato Si’, Pope Francis launched integral ecology as a new paradigm to solve the global ecological crises. The most fundamental challenge identified was that the awareness of the fact that everything is connected should be chosen by those who are trusted to design pastoral leadership formation within the Church to implement the above new paradigm. In line with the spirit of Laudato Si’, awareness should be understood as the opening of mind, heart, and will that will enable the development of new convictions, attitudes, and forms of life toward creating a new equilibrium. In this paper, …
Preventive Measures Against The Sexual Abuse Of Minors And Vulnerable Adults In Pastoral Ministry Today, Nchumbonga George Lekelefac
Preventive Measures Against The Sexual Abuse Of Minors And Vulnerable Adults In Pastoral Ministry Today, Nchumbonga George Lekelefac
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The current context regarding the efficient protection of minors and the attentiveness to ensure their human and spiritual development, in line with the dignity of the human person, are indispensable parts of the Gospel message. The Church and all her members are called to it. The need for an awareness of preventive measures against the sexual abuse of minors and of the vulnerable in pastoral ministry is of absolute importance. This article seeks to raise such an awareness of this crucial topic among the clergy, religious, and lay faithful who are directly or indirectly involved in pastoral ministry in the …

Building Pastoral Capacity In The Post-Pandemic Era Alongside Of “Human Fraternity”, Greg Soetomo Sj
Building Pastoral Capacity In The Post-Pandemic Era Alongside Of “Human Fraternity”, Greg Soetomo Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
A great number of people have expressed their admiration for the document on “Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” (HF). One of the comments that is commonly heard is, “We will use this document as a guide to build and strengthen good and vibrant interfaith and intercultural relations.” This desire for better relations is validated by a statement in the paper itself: “It is a document that invites all persons who have faith in God and faith in human fraternity to unite and work together so that it may serve as a guide for future generations to advance …

Signs Of Pandemic, Symbols Of Hope: A Sketch Of Pastoral Work In Liturgy, Antonius Firmansyah Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Bearing in mind that the faithful have already experienced the different impacts of COVID-19 in their daily life, pastoral workers need to find new ways of respecting the liturgical norms while also inviting and sustaining the spiritual motivation of the faithful to personally participate in liturgy. One possibility is through juxtaposing the signs of the pandemic encountered in our daily life with the symbols of liturgical celebration. To this end, pastoral workers need to facilitate an appropriate symbolic engagement process during liturgy.
Spiritual Life Of The Christian Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Family, Moses Mary Apreku
Spiritual Life Of The Christian Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Family, Moses Mary Apreku
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The Asia-Pacific Christian immigrants and non-immigrants have a huge impact on Western Christianity. Therefore, special pastoral care, faith, and spiritual formation should be given to immigrant families so that they can become efficient lay missionaries. Unfortunately, proper faith formation of the lay faithful is lacking in the Church, while by virtue of their baptism, they are also called to witness Christ in the world. The formation and training of Christians in the faith is essential so that as Christ’s disciples, they may become his efficient witnesses in the world. For this reason, Jesus took three years in training and forming …
Exploring Mission With Saint Paul Ten Pastoral-Theological Principles, James H. Kroeger Mm
Exploring Mission With Saint Paul Ten Pastoral-Theological Principles, James H. Kroeger Mm
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Saint Paul, apostle par excellence, tirelessly labored to spread the Gospel, particularly in the Gentile world. His missionary travels and encounter with diverse peoples, cultures, and religions form the matrix or context of his missionary methods. A comprehensive examination of Paul's writings yields much mission wisdom and insight shaped by his apostolic experience and dynamic faith. This presentation suggests ten “mission principles”—derived from Paul's direct mission experience coupled with his profound faith reflection and then “applied” to missionary engagement today.
Rebuilding From Covid-19: Pastoral Leadership Towards A New World, Christina Kheng
Rebuilding From Covid-19: Pastoral Leadership Towards A New World, Christina Kheng
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic calls for pastoral leadership that is spiritually-rooted, discerning, synodal, humble, and committed to rebuilding a better world. This article outlines a suggested process by which pastoral workers can reflect on the “pandemic year” together with their communities and exercise pastoral leadership in a collaborative way. In doing do, they might model a way of proceeding that brings new vitality to the Church’s life and mission in these challenging times.
Relationship Is At The Heart Of Dialogue: A Reflection On Engaging With Muslims In Delhi, Joseph Victor Edwin Sj
Relationship Is At The Heart Of Dialogue: A Reflection On Engaging With Muslims In Delhi, Joseph Victor Edwin Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This essay proposes that 'relationship' is at the heart of Christian-Muslim Relations. I present two simple experiences that I had with a Muslim teacher and young Muslim students during my years of formation towards priesthood. Those experiences taught me the importance of taking roots among Muslims so that we can discover in one another a brother or a sister. An attitude nurtured by Nostra Aetate will flourish in an ambience of open ended conversation between Christians and Muslims that neither compromises one's faith convictions nor disregards the faith convictions of Muslim brothers and sisters.
Finding Christ In Photographs Of Suffering, Harry Setianto Sunaryo
Finding Christ In Photographs Of Suffering, Harry Setianto Sunaryo
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Photojournalists employ images in order to tell a news story, honestly and impartially while telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Theologians, specialists in theology, reflect on faith as a personal response to God's self-communication. This article is an innovative attempt to bring them together, photojournalism and theology. Indeed, both make use of verbal and non-verbal language as well as a person's imagination. The author shows that both shall not exclude an urgent social concern for the common good. Here the author presents his reflection from a context of a country, the Philippines, in the middle of drug-war with its …
To Change A Culture: Reflections On One Attempt To Help Theology Students Reconsider Assumptions, Christine E. Burke Ibvm
To Change A Culture: Reflections On One Attempt To Help Theology Students Reconsider Assumptions, Christine E. Burke Ibvm
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
In a time described by Pope Francis as “not an era of change but a change of era,” assisting students to examine assumptions which are embedded in their culture is critical. Manila has many institutions dedicated to theological and pastoral formation. In a post Vatican II church, where baptism is recognized as empowering all to use their gifts as 'priests, prophets and kings'(spiritual leadership, commitment to justice, and governance), how can we help students to participate in a church challenged by the equality of women and men? Feminist theology offers rich resources to enable students to recognize and support the …
Incarnating The Missionary-Pastoral Character Of The Churches In Asia, Peter Pojol Sj
Incarnating The Missionary-Pastoral Character Of The Churches In Asia, Peter Pojol Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The emergence and growth of pastoral institutes in Asia manifests the missionary-pastoral trajectories that were made the center of the focus of the Church by Vatican II, echoed by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), and reaffirmed and rejuvenated for our time by Pope Francis. The pastoral institutes of Network Pastoral Asia and Inter-Institutional Collaboration illustrate this impetus. They invite sustained reflection on and creative application of the Council's “principle of pastorality,” which carefully attends to context and faithfully expresses the “centrifugal missionary dimension” of evangelization.
Lamentation And Hope Of University Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic In The Light Of Psalm 73, Nikolas Kristiyanto
Lamentation And Hope Of University Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic In The Light Of Psalm 73, Nikolas Kristiyanto
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic is challenging our faith and theology. Its impact is evident in our daily activities. For this reason, this article asks, “How widespread is the impact of COVID-19 on university students’ activities?” Then it tries to analyze that impact by using the structure of Psalm 73: (1) the credo, (2) lamentation, and (3) hope. It then provides a simple pastoral strategy to accompany the university students during this difficult time. This strategy involves all lecturers at every faculty in the university to redesign the teaching materials that can help students to reflect and to deepen their experiences during …

Ten Theological Trends For Mission In Asia: Fifty Years After Vatican Ii, Cardinal Orlando B. Quevedo Omi
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Recently the East Asian Pastoral Institute was privileged to listen to Cardinal Orlando Quevedo speak about the future of mission in Asia. The documentation for this significant presentation was in the form of an outline with specific key points receiving emphasis. Clearly, the Cardinal was speaking from his many years of experience with the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC). An editor, conversant with the FABC, has refashioned the basic insights into a narrative presentation, always seeking to remain faithful to the key insights of Cardinal Quevedo. To better appreciate the ten pivotal points highlighted by the Cardinal, the editor …
The Marzeah Festival And The Judgment Of Israel In Amos 6:4–7, Tarsisius Sigho Svd
The Marzeah Festival And The Judgment Of Israel In Amos 6:4–7, Tarsisius Sigho Svd
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Amos, who addressed his prophecy to the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II, is widely seen as a prophet of social injustice, since the minority wealthy elite groups in Israel were living a luxurious lifestyle at the expense of the poor. However, a close examination of the prophet's words will show that the worship of other gods was also one among other reasons of Israel's judgment by God. This is clear from the passage taken from Amos 6:4–7 that the cultic festival of Marzeah (Amos 6:7) was a direct reason for Israel to be taken exile.
Maturing As Believers Through Interreligious Encounters, Greg Soetomo Sj
Maturing As Believers Through Interreligious Encounters, Greg Soetomo Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
We believe that God is present, actively at work, and reveals Himself in various ways through the religions of humankind. Interreligious dialogue in all its forms can be mutually enriching and can help us in knowing and loving God more and in maturing as believers. It can also promote harmony and facilitate collaboration in building up the human family. The effective pastoral worker is one who is open to God’s Spirit in engaging with people of other faiths, and one who promotes meaningful inter-religious dialogue among peoples on all levels.
Critical Reflection And Pastoral Creativity: The Pilgrim Way Of The People Of God, Christina Kheng
Critical Reflection And Pastoral Creativity: The Pilgrim Way Of The People Of God, Christina Kheng
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Critical reflection and pastoral creativity are important orientations for mission. They involve being authentically present to a pastoral situation, appropriating relevant data, understanding with mind and heart, evaluating through purifying foundational beliefs, and formulating pastorally-sensitive and creative responses. It is a process that requires pastoral workers to be contemplatives-in-action as lifelong co-learners, connecting more deeply with God, self, others, and the context. This is in turn integral to synodality and communal discernment, and characterizes the pilgrim way of the people of God.
The Contribution Of Pastoral Institutes For An Inculturated And Contextualized Ministry, Paul B. Steffen Svd
The Contribution Of Pastoral Institutes For An Inculturated And Contextualized Ministry, Paul B. Steffen Svd
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This article focuses on the contribution of pastoral institutes for an inculturated and contextualized ministry in the non-Western local churches. The treated pastoral institutes in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania have played an outstanding role in implementing the communion ecclesiology of Vatican II in their respective local churches by moving towards an inculturated Christian faith and church and a contextualized Christian and ecclesial praxis. By following the Vatican II appeal to read and scrutinize the signs of the times, they played a catalytic function in the local non-Western churches to evangelize and to develop a meaningful ministry and participatory …
The Feminine Spirituality Of St. Teresa Of Avila: Ascending To God By Descending In Humility, Annie Pan Yi Jung
The Feminine Spirituality Of St. Teresa Of Avila: Ascending To God By Descending In Humility, Annie Pan Yi Jung
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Teresa’s spirituality helps contemporary readers to discover a transcendental path to God – inwardness is not an end in itself; it leads above and is the path toward God. Her writings inspire contemporary readers to reflect on the danger of self-transcendence spirituality, which emphasizes the self’s autonomy and self-sufficiency without dependency on God. Moreover, she helps contemporary Christians to be aware of the peril of self-actualization spirituality, which relies on self-service and selfaffirmation rather than on God’s love and grace.
Spirituality For Eapi: Forming Pastoral Servants With Discerning Hearts, Francisco Machado
Spirituality For Eapi: Forming Pastoral Servants With Discerning Hearts, Francisco Machado
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This paper articulates how the East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI) understands and seeks to foster spirituality. The ideas expressed here are the author’s attempt to convey his own understanding of what good spirituality is and of how EAPI can foster it among its participants. After an introduction about the relevance of spirituality for the formation of pastoral workers, a general definition of spirituality is given. This is followed by a reflection on how some key elements typical of the Asia Pacific context can and should affect our spirituality. The central idea explored in the rest of the paper is that …
Care For Creation And Works Of Mercy, Dennis T. Gonzalez
Care For Creation And Works Of Mercy, Dennis T. Gonzalez
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
In this age of disquiet owing to climate change and contemporary ecological-social calamities, a pastoral Church needs to form servantleaders who can be imaginative practitioners of ecological works of mercy, or who can sow seeds of the New Creation, which reveals the freedom, fidelity, empathy, and eco-social responsibility and maturity of God's sons and daughters in Christ.

Toward Effective Mission In Asia Pacific Today: Key Orientations For Pastoral Workers And Implications For Formation, Christina Kheng
Toward Effective Mission In Asia Pacific Today: Key Orientations For Pastoral Workers And Implications For Formation, Christina Kheng
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The current context of Asia Pacific, viewed in the light of foundational principles for the Church’s mission, requires pastoral workers to develop certain key orientations for effective ministry today. These include spiritual depth and maturity, Christ-centeredness, personal integration, meaningful communion with the ecclesial body, proactiveness in mission through life-giving dialogue, and pastoral discernment and creativity. In association with this, greater collaboration is needed in the initial and ongoing formation of pastoral workers so that the Church’s mission in Asia Pacific will be more effective in these times. It is hoped that this article will provide food for thought toward the …
The Contribution Of Daniel Madigan’S Theological Insights To Interreligious Dialogue In Indonesia, B. Christian Triyudo Prastowo
The Contribution Of Daniel Madigan’S Theological Insights To Interreligious Dialogue In Indonesia, B. Christian Triyudo Prastowo
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Interreligious dialogue has three interrelated dimensions: an interreligious dimension (mutual relationship), a dialogical dimension (effective communication), and a confessional dimension (deepening of faith and cooperation). This essay explores how Madigan’s theological reflection on dialogue with Muslims fits within those dimensions. Through descriptive-analytical and reflective-dialectical approaches, this essay concludes that the three interrelated dimensions of interreligious dialogue explain the holistic view of Madigan’s theological reflection. It is very useful for Christian-Muslim dialogue in Indonesian context. Two important contributions are the relevance of the dialogue of repentance and the approach of mutual hospitality in theological dialogue with Muslims. This is the kenosis …
