A Muslim-Catholic Mariology Iii1: Maryam Umm Eisa (Mary, Mother Of Jesus), R. T. Oliveros Jul 2024

A Muslim-Catholic Mariology Iii1: Maryam Umm Eisa (Mary, Mother Of Jesus), R. T. Oliveros

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The Virgin Birth in Islam is not about Maryam but she was chosen by Allāh for something bigger than herself. Maryam was 'made pure' by Allah (3.42) to be the perfect receptacle of the 'Word' who is Jesus the Christ (Eisa al-Masih). Her being immaculate (pure and sinless) is not to draw attention to herself but it is about the child—Eisa (Jesus), central to Allah's divine plan.

Body And Prayer: Comparing Taoist And Christian Methods Of Meditation, Paulin Batairwa Kubuya Sx Jul 2024

Body And Prayer: Comparing Taoist And Christian Methods Of Meditation, Paulin Batairwa Kubuya Sx

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This article explores the problems arising from the cross-cultural setting where these eastern and western meditative traditions meet. It further suggests that every interpretation and expansion of methods of meditation has to bear in mind the broadness and complexity of the new multicultural environment where the old techniques are being practiced. Such awareness will enable the birth of appropriate methods inspired by old traditions and yet fit for today's spiritual needs. Within overviews of the Taoist and Christian practices of meditation, we focus on the body—its role and place in meditation—to understand how Taoist and Christian meditations are related.

Understanding And Accessing North Korean Religion, Byun Jin Heung Jul 2024

Understanding And Accessing North Korean Religion, Byun Jin Heung

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Questions about North Korean religion always come with a question mark, and the general level of understanding about North Korean society is very low. This stems from doubts about North Korean communism. However, North Korea is a human society in which people live. As the society of North Korea has changed, so has the religion of North Korea. North Korea, especially after the collapse of the Cold War between East and West, has sought to change to survive and has used religion to gain recognition and acceptance from the international community. Religion has always been a tool to be used. …

Catholic-Muslim Mariology Ii Maryam’S Immaculate Conception, Renato Taib طيب Oliveros

Landas

This article explores the theological convergence between Catholic and Muslim beliefs regarding Mary, focusing on the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. It examines how early Christian prayers and Islamic scriptures highlight Mary’s purity and her role as a bridge in interfaith dialogues. The study underscores the significance of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in the Catholic tradition and its potential to enhance Muslim-Catholic relations in Southeast Asia. By analyzing theological texts, the article reveals shared spiritual themes and the mutual reverence for Maryam (Mary) in both religions, promoting deeper interreligious understanding and respect.

Thirty Years After The Council: The Catholic Church In The Philippines' Reception Of Pcp Ii And Remembrance Of Martial Law, Kenjie I. Cortez

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

2021 was a momentous time for the Catholic Church in the Philippines as it commemorated the thirtieth anniversary of the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP II).2 Nonetheless, the following year was in no way inconsequential because it marked both thirty years since the promulgation of the Council's Decrees and fifty years since the declaration of martial law. While one may find this a sheer coincidence, one must not forget that the country’s martial law experience significantly shaped PCP II’s and its vision of renewal for the Philippine Church.3 With the election of the dictator’s son and namesake to …

Synodality, Community, And The Margins, Gemma Tulud Cruz Jun 2023

Synodality, Community, And The Margins, Gemma Tulud Cruz

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Synodality is generally understood to represent a process of discernment-with the aid of the Holy Spirit-involving bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics, each according to the gifts and charisms of their vocation. As Gaudium et Spes reminds us it is for God’s people as a whole, with the help of the Holy Spirit, and especially for pastors and theologians, to listen to the various voices of our day, discerning them and interpreting them, and to evaluate them in the light of the divine word, so that the revealed truth can be increasingly appropriated, better understood, and more suitably expressed (GS, …

Cultivating Interreligious Dialogue As An Effective Peace-Building Mechanism In The Academe, Ramil R. Marcos Jan 2023

Cultivating Interreligious Dialogue As An Effective Peace-Building Mechanism In The Academe, Ramil R. Marcos

Landas

Efforts are underway to introduce and/or strengthen peace education in the Philippine educational system, an endeavor that necessarily includes interreligious relations as a component of the program, especially given the diverse religious profiles of many stakeholders in the academe. This article contributes essential Scriptural and pastoral backgrounds that undergird the Catholic approach to and method of dialogue. It explores the possibilities for incorporating both ecumenical and interreligious dialogue in the training and formation of Filipino students, a move encouraged by sociologists and academicians. The article revisits the dimensions of dialogue that promote active relationships, the common pursuit of goals, respect …

A Trinitarian Pneumatology For Evangelization In Asia, Renato Taib Oliveros Jan 2023

A Trinitarian Pneumatology For Evangelization In Asia, Renato Taib Oliveros

Landas

Asian religions may differ in their belief in the Spirit yet the Spirit is the same Spirit that has been present amongst Asians since creation. In Redemptoris Missio, St. John Paul II acknowledges that the Holy Spirit is active in the heart of every person and that the Spirit’s activity can also affect “society and history, peoples, cultures and religions.” The Spirit of God communicates the Word as the Christ incarnate, the same Word revealed by the Spirit to non-Christians as divine wisdom and guidance. The Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of God for …

Aptep In The Islamic City Of Marawi, Renato Taib Oliveros Jan 2023

Aptep In The Islamic City Of Marawi, Renato Taib Oliveros

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

In August 2022, the Asia Pacific Theological Encounter Programme (APTEP) sent ten (10) Jesuit scholastics from Arrupe House to Mindanao to live life with Muslims in the Islamic City of Marawi. For the scholastics, it would be a revisit to the 1850-1950 Jesuit mission in Dansalan before it was renamed to Marawi in 1956. In 1923, Dansalan got its first residentpriest with the arrival of Father Joseph Reith, SJ. He started and eventually completed the construction of the parish church dedicated to Maria Auxiliadora in 1934. He was appointed, thereafter, as its first parish priest. For the scholastics visiting the …

Indigenous Communities In Distress: Religious Deluge And Church Deflection In Solomon Islands, David Welchman Gegeo Jan 2023

Indigenous Communities In Distress: Religious Deluge And Church Deflection In Solomon Islands, David Welchman Gegeo

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The five pillars of Christianity in Solomon Islands since the 1800s are: the Anglican Church of Melanesian, Catholic Church, South-seas Evangelical Church, Methodist Church and the Seventh Day Adventist Church (hereafter “the Church”). Despite differences in institutional structure and dogma, the five pillars coexisted well which started to unhinge following Solomon Islands independence in 1978 when rural and urban squatters' communities were deluged by new opportunistic churches and religious sects from overseas. The deluge triggered church deflection in which large communities abandoned the Church and joined the new brands of Christianity and religious sects causing interdenominational animosity and cultural and …

A Proposal: The Role Of Federation Of Asian Bishops' Conferences For An Asian Peace Community, Hyunju Shim Jan 2023

A Proposal: The Role Of Federation Of Asian Bishops' Conferences For An Asian Peace Community, Hyunju Shim

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

FABC emphasizes triple dialogue with the poor, Asian cultures and religions, as a way to evangelize Asia. These dialogues can greatly contribute to the creation of a peaceful community in Asia. The Asian Peace Community is a project to create a new Asia, that hasn't been done yet. First, in order to develop effective pastoral activities within the church, the vast region operates in several small centers. Second, when Asian countries speak of a political, security and economic community, the church should refer to the human rights community. Human rights are the ultimate goal of peace. Therefore, we need to …

The Obligation Of The Bishop To Implement The Requirements Of Justice Regarding The Abuse Of Minors And Vulnerable By Clerics In His Diocese, Nchumbonga George Lekelefac

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The diocesan bishop has the irrevocable canonical responsibility, obligation and commitment in implementing the requirements of justice regarding the abuse of minors and the vulnerable by clerics in his diocese. Two years after the first edition, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published a second version of the “Vademecum on Certain Points of Procedure in Treating Cases of Sexual Abuse of Minors Committed by Clerics” on 27 June 2022. The aforementioned Dicastery announced in a statement that the new version will build upon the 2020 Vademecum developed by the Dicastery to assist bishops, or any person in authority, …

The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr. Jan 2022

The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr.

Loyola Papers

Advocating the crafting of inculturated catechisms, this paper calls for a pedagogy of faith built not from the desks of catechetical authorities but from the ground. In this pedagogical renewal, necessitated by changing times and circumstances, the paper finds a rallying point and guiding principle in the FABC’s call for inculturation understood as “dialogue.” At the same time, it identifies a number of ongoing challenges that hinder this process, including notions and methodologies of inculturation that can be unilateral and amount to a kind of imposition on the receiving culture, which possesses its own customs and practices. The paper then …

Fethullah Gülen: A Man With A Mission, Victor Edwin Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

“Are Fethullah Gülen and the Hizmet (service) community friends or foes?’ I must answer that they are our friends. They are the kind of Muslim interlocutors for an active dialogue which we have been searching for since the time of Nostra Aetate.” With these words Fr. Tom Michel, SJ introduced the present writer to the members of the Hizmet movement in Delhi. Fethullah Gülen is a Turkish scholar and teacher of the Holy Qur'an, who has inspired a global movement of millions of individuals to dedicate themselves to literacy, social enterprise, and interreligious dialogue to build peace in the world. …

The Church's Mission Of Dialogue In The Digital Age, Anthony Le Duc Svd Jan 2022

The Church's Mission Of Dialogue In The Digital Age, Anthony Le Duc Svd

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The development of Internet Communication Technology (ICT) has led the world into a new context with social, philosophical, and theological implications. It also presents missionary challenges that demand due response from Church leaders and members. This paper explores the nature of the present context and the ramifications that this milieu holds for the Catholic Church and the Church's relationship with other religions. Close examination indicates that the digital age characterized by exponential increase in knowledge production, heightened sense of enclavism, and difficult to control disinformation about religions and religious matters places society at great risks for interreligious misunderstanding and conflict. …

Thomas O'Shaughnessy, Sj & Fazlur Rahman: The Incarnation In The Qur'Ān, Renato T. Oliveros Phd Jan 2022

Thomas O'Shaughnessy, Sj & Fazlur Rahman: The Incarnation In The Qur'Ān, Renato T. Oliveros Phd

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The Incarnation of Jesus Christ (Eisa al-Masih), a central Christian doctrine that the eternal “Word became flesh” is confirmed in the Qur'ān as the Logos named the Christ (Q. 3:45). The Spirit (Ruh) in Surah 19, and the Word (Christ) in Surah 3 confirm the Incarnation narrative in the Gospels of Luke 1 and John 1. In the spirit of Ignatius’ openness to extra-Biblical sources in the Spiritual Exercises (SPEX), Qur’ānic sources can be integrated in the Ignatian contemplation on the Incarnation. O’Shaughnessy and F. Rahman argue that the Rūḥ al-qudus ( القدس روح , “Holy Spirit”) is not the …

Rites–Christian And Non-Christian–In A Cosmic Liturgy Of Fraternity, Nihal Abeyasingha Jan 2022

Rites–Christian And Non-Christian–In A Cosmic Liturgy Of Fraternity, Nihal Abeyasingha

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The present article starts from the Past-Present-Future dimensions of sacraments, to which Vagaggini has added the moral-dispositive element (commitment). These four dimensions within the Christian perspective can be analysed as (1) anamnesis, presentation of gifts and persons, (2) epiclesis, invoking Spirit to transform gifts and weld together persons, (3) eschatology, and (4) theosis. When applied in a non-Christian environment, one can expand these four elements in terms of (1) narration (memory), (2) presentation of themselves through whatever gestures, (3) fulfillment/maturation and, (4) generativity. Through this analysis, one can speak of even non-Christians being united in a cosmic liturgy in the …

Thirty Years After Pcp Ii: Community Pantries And The Vision Of A Church Of The Poor, Kenjie I. Cortez

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This paper is an attempt to explore the implications of communion in the summaries in Acts 2:42; 4:32-35 in relation to PCP II's vision of a Church renewed. It also puts forward the possibility of looking at the socalled community pantries as viable means to our ongoing reception of PCP II's vision of a Church as a Church of the Poor.
