Two Thousand Years Of The Church's Mission In Asia: Waves Of Evangelization, Holiness, And Martyrdom, Felipe Gómez Sj
Two Thousand Years Of The Church's Mission In Asia: Waves Of Evangelization, Holiness, And Martyrdom, Felipe Gómez Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The Church’s mission in Asia has been going on for two millennia. Felipe Gómez sketches in broad strokes the history of missionary efforts in different parts of the continent. From the first century onwards, multifaceted saga of Christian mission in Asia involved the laity; Christian traders and migrants inconspicuously enhanced the laying of the groundwork for the Gospel proclamation. The radiance in the lives of holy laymen and laywomen and the blood of lay martyrs are eloquent signs of God ever at work in the hearts of Asians.

Vatican Ii: A “Crisigenic” Council With An Unwritten Agenda, Aloysius Pieris Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The Second Vatican Council was like a new Pentecost which John XXIII invoked upon the Church. The Council emphasized a pastoral renewal that required attitudinal as well as structural change. Pieris offers the “Council” of Jerusalem as a precedent: it also dealt with a crisis that called for a conciliar decision. Since then, Vatican II is the first council to make crisigenic decisions which triggered both a caesura from the euro-ecclesial domination and a renewal in theology, spirituality, and sacramental life. Reform is from the center, renewal from the periphery. Fidelity to the Council demands maintaining the momentum of renewal …
From “Ad Gentes” To “Active Integral Evangelization”: The Reception Of Vatican Ii’S Mission Theology In Asia, Jonathan Y. Tan
From “Ad Gentes” To “Active Integral Evangelization”: The Reception Of Vatican Ii’S Mission Theology In Asia, Jonathan Y. Tan
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Jonathan Y. Tan shows that, while FABC recognizes the contribution of the Vatican II documents Ad Gentes and Nostra Aetate to its own mission theology, it gives preference to the latter’s dialogical path. Asians of other faiths are partners and collaborators in mutual witness; thus the possibility of an extraecclesial means of salvation, which both FABC and Vatican II affirm, might soon gain a foothold. Asian bishops envision active integral evangelization as the way forward, building upon the tentative vision of Vatican II.

A Brief History Of The Catholic Church In Vietnam, Peter N. V. Hai
A Brief History Of The Catholic Church In Vietnam, Peter N. V. Hai
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
In a succinct form, Peter N. V. Hai traces the historical growth of the Church in Vietnam from its beginning (1533) to its present maturation. He brings out salient features of such development: the lay people’s exemplary witness of faith, at times to the point of shedding their blood, their fidelity to the Church, and their zeal for lay ministry. At present they are taking a fuller role in the evangelizing mission of the Church.
Challenges To The Churches In Asia Today, Georg Evers
Challenges To The Churches In Asia Today, Georg Evers
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Georg Evers, in “Challenges to the Churches in Asia Today,” begins with a brief overview of the situation of the Asian churches before Vatican II. He then discusses the significance of the Council for the Asian churches with special attention to the founding of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. He describes the main characteristics of the Catholic churches in Asia. In the main theme of his talk, “The Challenges to the Asian Churches,” Evers presents prophetic figures who have inspired the churches to radical Christian commitment and invites us to examine contemporary secular and theological challenges.
Women In Society And In The Church Of Tamil Nadu, M. Baby Kamala
Women In Society And In The Church Of Tamil Nadu, M. Baby Kamala
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
M. Baby Kamala shows that Tamil society, formerly matriarchal and pluralistic, is now patriarchal, and women in the society are in an ambiguous position. They are culturally voiceless and politically powerless. Customs and hardline practices suppress and oppress them. In arguing that women are victims both in society and in the Church, Kamala discusses such issues as low wages for women, inheritance laws, female infanticide, the dowry, and calls for a “discipleship of equals” as a new way of being Church in Asia.

Is There An Asian Way Of Doing Theology?, Michael Amaladoss Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Michael Amaladoss, S.J., gives us further insights into Asian theology, describing it as contextual, holistic, and more right-brain-oriented. He gives many interesting examples and concludes with an appeal for the acceptance of pluralism in theology.
Assuming All That Is Asian: Becoming A Truly Local Church In Dialogue, Ruben C. Mendoza
Assuming All That Is Asian: Becoming A Truly Local Church In Dialogue, Ruben C. Mendoza
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Ruben C. Mendoza attempts to show how the theological principle of the incarnation lies at the heart of and informs the FABC’s vision of the local Church. It is expressed in the FABC’s theological methodology, the triple-dialogue approach to mission, mission of service, and emphasis on the building up of local Churches. For the FABC, the Church of Asia, in becoming truly local, is called to assume all that is truly Asian.
Prophetic Dialogue With Cultures And Religions In Fiji: A Pastoral Imperative, Timoci Kolodisi
Prophetic Dialogue With Cultures And Religions In Fiji: A Pastoral Imperative, Timoci Kolodisi
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Timoci Kolodisi begins with a survey of the geography, ethnic groups, socio-cultural and political landscape, and the religious affiliations of the islands of Fiji. He then describes the society’s traditional social structures with its worldview, values, and beliefs before discussing the coming of Christianity to the islands, and the early efforts at inculturation. In conclusion, he invites the Church—if it wishes to be an effective sign and a path to peace—to focus on its spiritual meaning and enhance its relations with the different communities and religions in Fiji.
A Comparative Analysis Of The Concept Of Revelation In Christianity And Islam, Vincent Battaglia
A Comparative Analysis Of The Concept Of Revelation In Christianity And Islam, Vincent Battaglia
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Christians and Muslims have a mutually irreconcilable understanding of the form and content of divine revelation, so argues Vincent Battaglia. He outlines the concept of revelation from both a Christian and Islamic perspective, and contrasts the two approaches by noting similarities and differences between their respective traditions. He then identifies some theological challenges within the Christian-Islamic dialogue and briefly develops rudiments of an Islamic revelation from a Christian perspective. Finally, he argues that since both traditions share a fellowship of faith, they can have a sense of being “the nearest in affection” to one another (cf. Qur’an5:85).

A New Way Of Being Church: Fabc Teachings On Basic Ecclesial Communities, Ramesh Lakshmanan
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Asian bishops and general AsIPA (Asian Integral Pastoral Approach) assemblies have always insisted that the Asian Church has to be participatory. This is realized through Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs). BECs encourage lay participation in the life and mission of the Church, particularly in the parishes. BECs have brought a new dimension to the ministry of the Church. They have become a good platform to carry out new ministries. This article presents the teachings of the Asian bishops and the AsIPA in their final statements.

Horacio De La Costa, Foreign Missionaries, And The Quest For Filipinization: The Church In The Age Of Decolonization, Jr. Aguilar, Nicholas; Ateneo Sy
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Fr. Horacio de la Costa became the first Filipino Superior of the Jesuit Province in the Philippines (1964–1970) at a time when the Filipinization of religious orders was intensely contested. As a young priest, De la Costa sought the training of more Filipino priests so that the Catholic Church would “take root” in the country. Filipinization, however, entailed two further questions: Filipino assumption of leadership positions and the role of foreign missionaries. Thisarticle examines how De la Costa’s approaches to these issues shifted when he became provincial and as the crisis in Philippine society deepened, revealing the intertwining of national …

The Early Periodicals Of The Iglesia Filipina Independiente (1903–1904) And The Emergence Of A Transregional And Transcontinental Indigenous-Christian Public Sphere, Adrian Hermann
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The early periodicals of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI), La Verdad (1903) and La Iglesia Filipina Independiente: Revista Católica (1903–1904), have been quoted as primary sources but have not been explored in their own right. Since its beginnings, the IFI understood itself as belonging to a transcontinental, global movement of independent Catholic churches. The periodicals published various letters that the IFI had received from foreign Catholic groups that were similarly independent of Rome. This research note focuses on these periodicals and locates the IFI in an emerging transregional and transcontinental indigenous-Christian public sphere. Keywords: Iglesia Filipina Independiente • Periodicals • Indigenous-Christian …

The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza
Theology Department Faculty Publications
For the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), the Holy Spirit appears to serve as a key in understanding and interpreting other religious traditions and how the Church is to relate with their followers. The Asian bishops consistently affirm that the Holy Spirit is actively present in other religions and that these religions contain expressions and practices that are inspired and prompted by the Spirit. This is why these manifestations of the Spirit’s presence demands critical discernment and that these must be in dialogue with the Spirit’s activity in the Church. In and through this the Spirit’s manifold works within …
