A Framework For Dynamic Combat Support Exercises, Sean R. Mccarty
A Framework For Dynamic Combat Support Exercises, Sean R. Mccarty
Theses and Dissertations
Future armed conflict will be characterized by the unknown as adversaries innovate and evolve—surprise is inevitable. Current exercises provide inadequate opportunities for combat support forces to develop improvisational skills. This research proposes an extensible framework for human-in-the-loop control of exercises using a graph network for modeling combined with topological analysis and the resource-constrained project scheduling problem. This framework is assessed using the United States Air Force Silver Flag exercise as a case study with promising results.
A Model-Based And System-Theoretic Approach To Design Advanced Autonomy For Air Dominance Missions: A Loyal Wingman Case Study, Elizabeth S. Pennington
A Model-Based And System-Theoretic Approach To Design Advanced Autonomy For Air Dominance Missions: A Loyal Wingman Case Study, Elizabeth S. Pennington
Theses and Dissertations
In contested air environments, safe coordination between decision-makers is paramount. Although the Department of Defense (DoD) prioritizes the development of Artificially Intelligent (AI) wingmen for air combat, a lack of methodology exists to design safe, holistic coordination between human and autonomous wingmen in the same environment. This thesis delivers a framework using Systems Theoretic Process Analysis Extended for Coordination (STPA-Coord) to analyze and design holistic coordination for the Loyal Wingman concept in an Air Dominance mission. STPA-Coord is a safety and hazard analysis process that uses Systems Theory to analyze and design coordination between decisionmakers in a system-of-systems architecture. Using …

Navigating Model-Based Systems Engineering (Mbse) Transition In The Department Of Defense (Dod): A Capability-Based Assessment (Cba) Use Case, Emily M. Tritschler
Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Defense (DOD) wants to implement Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) to accelerate and improve the acquisition process of increasingly complex systems. However, the department has not provided the necessary guidance on how to fully implement MBSE into our systems. This provided the following research opportunity: select a common DOD process, create an MBSE methodology, generate a model in accordance with that developed method, record the cost of modeling, and interview the model recipients to characterize their opinions on the investment. The research created a twelve-step methodology for application towards the gap analysis and characterization phase of a Capability-Based …
Deploying Field-Capable Genome Sequencing: Human Performance Considerations Under Various Personal Protective Equipment Ensembles, Steven A. Torres
Deploying Field-Capable Genome Sequencing: Human Performance Considerations Under Various Personal Protective Equipment Ensembles, Steven A. Torres
Theses and Dissertations
Field-portable genome sequencing enhances the Department of Defense's strategy for detecting biological threats, particularly in resource-limited environments. While current field-capable detection methods are effective, challenges in identifying emerging threats pose risks to personnel safety. As biotechnological advancements like portable nanopore genome sequencing can advance biological detection capabilities, the viability of conducting laboratory tasks under Mission-Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) ensembles lacks sufficient data. This research assesses the effectiveness of tools like pipettes, centrifuges, vortexes, and nanopore sequencing within a MOPP ensemble. Novice participants were utilized to explore the extension of this capability, and they completed tasks in three conditions: Fatigues, Laboratory …
Optimal Trajectory Solutions For Unmanned Pursuer/Evader Offensive Counterair Including Engagement Zone, Alexander Hansen
Optimal Trajectory Solutions For Unmanned Pursuer/Evader Offensive Counterair Including Engagement Zone, Alexander Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
This work considers a two-actor scenario of a faster, unmanned pursuer with an engagement zone (EZ) and a non-maneuvering mobile evader. The pursuer aims to capture an evader with a circular EZ. The EZ is dynamic and shifts as a function of the evader’s velocity vector. As the evader’s strategy changes, the EZ relative to the pursuer adjusts based on relative heading and speed of the two agents. Using nonlinear optimal control techniques, the optimal trajectory and minimum time to engage the evader are determined for various pursuer initial headings and positions through MATLAB simulation. The results build a control …

Shock-Wave Tolerant Phase Reconstruction Algorithm For Shack–Hartmann Wavefront Sensor Data, Thomas E. Defoor, Matthew Kalensky, Matthew R. Kemnetz, Timothy J. Bukowski, Mark F. Spencer
Faculty Publications
We develop a phase reconstruction algorithm for the Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWFS) that is tolerant to phase discontinuities, such as the ones imposed by shock waves. In practice, this algorithm identifies SHWFS locations where the resultant tilt information is affected by the shock and improves the tilt information in these locations using the local SHWFS observation-plane irradiance patterns. The algorithm was shown to work well over the range of conditions tested with both simulated and experimental data. In turn, the reconstruction algorithm will enable robust wavefront sensing in transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic environments.
Federated Active Learning For Network Intrusion Detection, Matthew D. R. Sauer
Federated Active Learning For Network Intrusion Detection, Matthew D. R. Sauer
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses challenges with detecting attacks on computer networks within a Federated Learning (FL) framework, when labeled instances are few. We explore the integration of active learning (AL) and semi-supervised learning (SSL). AL efficiently uses data that would otherwise be wasted or require substantial time for labeling. SSL provides capacity to train models that have a limited amount of labeled data, by utilizing additional unlabeled data that is available. We show how FL combined with AL or SSL can realize a detection system that adapts and trains quickly to new networks, reducing the total amount of data labeling needed. …
Brdf Measurements And Physical Optics Modeling Applied To Anisotropic Satellite Solar Cells, Madilynn E. Compean
Brdf Measurements And Physical Optics Modeling Applied To Anisotropic Satellite Solar Cells, Madilynn E. Compean
Theses and Dissertations
Light curve analysis is often used to discern information about satellites in geosynchronous orbits, and since solar panels comprise relatively large surface areas, their reflected energy can contribute greatly to observed light curves. Data was collected using a space qualified solar cell interrogated by a green HeNe laser. The data validated certain aspects from previous work, but also identified multi-slit behavior, showed that the specular term was a second diffraction pattern, and diagnosed the out-of-plane diffraction curvature as the conical diffraction phenomenon. Two physical-optics-based models were developed to incorporate these new features and better predict solar cell BRDF solely from …
Evaluating The Chief Of Staff Of The Air Force 2016 Initiative To Revitalize The Squadron: A Thematic Content Analysis Of Appreciative Inquiry Mechanisms, John M. Huntz
Theses and Dissertations
A thorough thematic analysis and literature review were undertaken to understand better the integration of AI mechanisms within the Revitalize the Squadron initiative. To facilitate the initiative's implementation, the aim is to provide commanders with practical instances, dimensions, findings, and results. Throughout the coding process, instances of AI’s mechanisms were discovered in the literature. The link between PE and HQR boosted the overall vitality within the squadron, where vitality was determined to be the goal. AI, as a whole, was not found in the literature, but the analysis determined that the Revitalize the Squadron initiative was “Appreciative” in nature.
Analysis Of Multi-Agent Routing Solution Methodologies Exploring A Mosaic Warfare Strategy, Stephen D. Donnel
Analysis Of Multi-Agent Routing Solution Methodologies Exploring A Mosaic Warfare Strategy, Stephen D. Donnel
Theses and Dissertations
Recognizing that communication between assets may be possible locally but not globally (e.g., due to disruptions to a communication network), Mosaic Warfare requires the movement and operation of multiple, dispersed assets in smaller groups (i.e., tiles), within which exist hierarchical, functional relationships between assets. This research first evaluates a heuristic for an enterprise of aerial assets comprised of airborne sensors, command and control, and strike aircraft seeking to move towards and destroy stationary targets. Next, we examine routing multiple assets of different types over a network to service demands in a collaborative manner, in that, when servicing a demand, …
Domain Restriction Zones: An Evolution Of The Military Exclusion Zone, Cole M. Mooty, Robert A. Bettinger, Mark G. Reith
Domain Restriction Zones: An Evolution Of The Military Exclusion Zone, Cole M. Mooty, Robert A. Bettinger, Mark G. Reith
Faculty Publications
Since the early part of the twenty-first century, US adversaries have expanded their military capabilities within and their access to new warfighting domains. When faced with the growth of adversaries’ asymmetric capabilities, the means, tactics, and strategies previously used by the US military lose their proportional effectiveness. To avoid such degradation of capability, the operational concept of the military exclusion zone (MEZ) should be revised to suit the modern battlespace while also addressing the shifts in national policy that encourage diplomacy over military force. The concept and development of domain restriction zones (DRZs) increase the relevancy of traditional MEZs in …

A Case For An Independent Cyber Force, Ian C. Heffron, Mark Reith, James W. Dean
Faculty Publications
Although cyberspace is considered the newest warfighting domain, military analysts and scholars have opined the United States remains woefully behind its peers in cyberspace and have called for the creation of a separate cyber service component. Yet a cohesive and robust discussion on this topic has yet to emerge. This article proposes a general framework that builds on the Joint doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel, facilities, and policy (DOTMLPF-P) analysis to address questions of sufficiency and necessity. Such analysis reveals DoD cyber operations do not maximize the United States’ ability to fight a cyber war, especially when …

Adoption Of Model-Based Systems Engineering In Traditional Dod Systems, Patrick E. Assef, Jeremy R. Geiger
Faculty Publications
The transition to digital engineering has become a major objective within the Department of Defense (DoD). One such method is Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), or the use of models to facilitate systems engineering. Most new DoD programs are being built from the ground up using MBSE. However, the question of whether MBSE should be incorporated into existing systems still lingers. Little research currently exists on the efforts required to transition existing systems to MBSE. In this article, the authors measure the effort required to transition an existing system of systems (SoS), which primarily relied on document-centric methods, to MBSE. Time …

Adaptation Of Network Flow Problems For Course Of Action Generation, Alexander N. Stephens
Adaptation Of Network Flow Problems For Course Of Action Generation, Alexander N. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis introduces two methods to generate Courses of Action (COA) in distributed warfare scenarios: the Wargaming Commodity Course of Action Automated Method Under Uncertainty (WCCAAM-U2) and Dynamic Transshipment Problem (DTP)-generated COAs. Previous work by Deberry et al. used a Multi-Commodity Flow Problem (MCFP) to generate COAs for single-period wargame scenarios with known enemy force amounts. In WCCAAM-U2, we adapt an MCFP to work in situations where only intelligence estimates of enemy forces are known. Compared to two other COA-generation methods, the WCCAAAM-U2 COA outperforms the next highest-performing COA by 307% when compared by a ratio of objective success rate …
Method Development Biological Agent Personal Decontamination Effectiveness For Airman Battle Uniform Fabric Material: Ms2 Bacteriophage, Alisha Helm
Theses and Dissertations
This article presents a study that investigates the effectiveness of a common decontamination (decon) strategy used by Airmen in the United States Air Force who may find themselves in a densely populated area during an emergency evacuation. Ultimately, this study addresses the following questions: Is there a significant difference in the number of viral particles being re-aerosolized before and after the applied decon strategy, and is this difference significant enough to consider the decon strategy effective? The study entails using MS2 bacteriophage to contaminate swatches of Airman Battle Uniform (ABU) fabric. Swatches were secured to a vortex centered in the …
A Systems Modeling Approach To Support Human-Agent Team Performance For Combat Identification, Clayton W. Couch
A Systems Modeling Approach To Support Human-Agent Team Performance For Combat Identification, Clayton W. Couch
Theses and Dissertations
Combat Identification (CID) in an air-to-air combat context is a highly complex cognitive task that requires the operator to make rapid, high consequence decisions. To accomplish CID, fighter aircrew must attend to and perceive a broad range of information while concurrently building situation awareness (SA) and conducting other tasks. While existing automated agents are available to help fighter aircrew with this CID task, they are designed for a very narrow subset of the overall task and are not well suited for human-agent teaming. An interdependence analysis of the human operator and supporting machine agents conducted for this task support the …

Cellphone-Acoustics Based Suas Detection And Tracking, Ryan D. Clendening
Theses and Dissertations
Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) are an easily accessible technology that has become an increasingly large threat to US critical systems. This threatening technology demands using fault-tolerant, low-cost, replaceable, and accurate sensing resources, which counter the ubiquitous nature of sUAS [1]. Therefore, the methods developed in this thesis detect and track sUAS using easily accessible sensing resources, such as cellphones. First, we develop an acoustics sensor network-based sUAS detection methodology. In the latter effort, a deep learning model is trained using the acoustics data from the data collection to predict sUAS range from a cellphone. Combined, these two efforts demonstrate …
