In Sickness And In Health, Katharine Keiser Apr 2019

In Sickness And In Health, Katharine Keiser

KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference

Being the most sensitive person in my family was always a problem. My parents would constantly tell me I was exaggerating largely and making issues worse than they were, and I took this as a criticism every single time it was said. At 12 years old, I began to learn why they always told me not to exaggerate a circumstance. My grandmother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but nobody told me she was battling cancer until after her major surgery. When my dad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma a year later, I truly understood what it meant to appreciate those …

What The African Continental Free Trade Agreement Protocol On Dispute Settlement Says About The Culture Of African States To Dispute Resolution, Olabisi Akinkugbe

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

An effective Dispute Settlement Mechanisms (DSM) upholds a rules-based trade regime; enunciates, clarifies and develops the jurisprudence of its constituent trade agreement; and also ensures predictability in the trading regime. Article 20 of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) establishes the DSM. The AfCFTA Protocol on Dispute Settlement (“Dispute Protocol”) provides for the rules and procedures for the settlement of disputes. Unlike the majority of the African regional economic community courts that are modelled after the Court of Justice of the European Union, the AfCFTA-DSM follows a handful of other regional judicial bodies – such as the Southern …

Extracts were analyzed using Agilent’s 7890B gas chromatograph (GC) coupled to a 7010 tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) operating in multiple reactions mode (MRM). The dataset contains the location, date, biometrics, and the total concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in livers. The cruise documentation was provided …

The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in snow pea, Pisum sativum, height when grown with Organilock fertilizer compared to without fertilizer in Murray, Kentucky. The snow peas were grown in two separate 3 foot by 4 foot plots, one with the Organilock product and the other without fertilizer. The snow peas were planted at a 1 inch depth and 2 inches apart along a cattle panel in the middle of each plot. Plot A, no Organilock fertilizer, was planted exactly two weeks …

Dohad And The Latina Paradox, Chelsea Peterson, Kellie Pertl, Lulu Gonzalez, Molly Sax

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

The Latina Paradox is the observation that Latina mothers in the United States have better than expected birth outcomes despite lower socioeconomic status and higher prevalence of risk factors. The Latina Paradox is particularly prominent among women born in Mexico that immigrate to the U.S. prior to having children. Mexican-born women who give birth in the U. S. experience fewer incidences of low birth weight than White women born in the U. S. Various factors are responsible for the Latina Paradox, including social and cultural support in maternity, traditional diet, and immigration of healthier than average women to the U.S. …

Consistency Is Futile!: Selecting Phycoremediators For Consortia, Tori Spencer Apr 2019

Consistency Is Futile!: Selecting Phycoremediators For Consortia, Tori Spencer

BIO 410 Spring 2019 Research Papers

Bioremediation is the process by which organisms remove and transform toxic compounds in a contaminated source. This is a waste management technique currently used to clean up man-made contamination. Many organisms act as natural remediators; in the case of algae, they are called phycoremediators who perform phycoremediaton. The term algae encompasses a variety of taxonomic groups and their diversity is still being realized; there are over 44,000 named species of the 72,000 species that we have identified. Some estimates calculate that there are over 200,000 diatom species alone. This diversity continues to be difficult to organize, which is problematic for …

Redox Regulation Of Hormone Sensitive Lipase: Potential Role In The Mechanism Of Mehp-Induced Stimulation Of Basal Steroid Synthesis In Ma-10 Leydig Cells, Christine Zhou, Ninad Zaman, Y R. Li, Daniel B. Martinez-Arguelles, Vassilios Papadopoulos, Barry Zirkin, Kassim Traore Apr 2019

Redox Regulation Of Hormone Sensitive Lipase: Potential Role In The Mechanism Of Mehp-Induced Stimulation Of Basal Steroid Synthesis In Ma-10 Leydig Cells, Christine Zhou, Ninad Zaman, Y R. Li, Daniel B. Martinez-Arguelles, Vassilios Papadopoulos, Barry Zirkin, Kassim Traore

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), the active metabolite of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), is a plasticizer with endocrine disruptor activity that has been shown to stimulate basal steroid biosynthesis in Leydig cells. The mechanism by which it does so is unknown. Using MA-10 mouse tumor Leydig cells, we assessed the effects of MEHP on reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and on the signal transduction pathways that mobilize cholesterol. Exposure to 0-300 μM MEHP stimulated basal progesterone production in a dose-dependent manner. Progesterone stimulation was correlated with increases in the phosphorylation of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL; aka cholesteryl ester hydrolase), which is involved in the …

Effects Of Local And Global Dynamics On The Supertertiary Organization Of Postsynaptic Density Protein 95, George Hamilton, Jakub Kubiak, Mark Bowen, Claus Am Seidel

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Using a designed network of FRET pairs, we probed interdomain distances between pairwise combinations of subdomains in the full-length postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95). In addition to the initial labeling sites, for which helices were chosen, FRET pairs utilizing sites in disordered regions were utilized to probe the dynamics associated with reorientation of these regions that may be absent in the more rigid secondary structural elements. In this study, we used TCSPC to perform single-molecule and “bulk” concentration FRET measurements for each designed mutant of PSD95. Through a global analysis of data from these experiments, we aim to resolve interdomain …
