Supply Chain Opportunity Costs About To Explode, Michael Gravier

Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles

The cost of tariffs gets a lot of popular media attention, but it’s a shallow treatment of a complex disease. Yesterday Bloomberg ran a piece titled, “The Age of Global Supply Chains Is in Trouble,” about the worrying impact of export restrictions on global supply chains.

Rapid Invariant Encoding Of Scene Layout In Human Opa, Linda Henriksson, Marieke Mur, Nikolaus Kriegeskorte Jul 2019

Rapid Invariant Encoding Of Scene Layout In Human Opa, Linda Henriksson, Marieke Mur, Nikolaus Kriegeskorte

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Successful visual navigation requires a sense of the geometry of the local environment. How do our brains extract this information from retinal images? Here we visually presented scenes with all possible combinations of five scene-bounding elements (left, right, and back walls; ceiling; floor) to human subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). The fMRI response patterns in the scene-responsive occipital place area (OPA) reflected scene layout with invariance to changes in surface texture. This result contrasted sharply with the primary visual cortex (V1), which reflected low-level image features of the stimuli, and the parahippocampal place area (PPA), …

Defect Detection Method Using Deep Convolutional Neural Network, Support Vector Machine And Template Matching Techniques, Maki Khalil Habib Jul 2019

Defect Detection Method Using Deep Convolutional Neural Network, Support Vector Machine And Template Matching Techniques, Maki Khalil Habib

Faculty Journal Articles

In this paper, a defect detection method using deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), support vector machine (SVM) and template matching techniques is introduced. First, a DCNN for visual inspection is designed and trained using a large number of images to inspect undesirable defects such as crack, burr, protrusion, chipping, spot and fracture phenomena which appear in the manufacturing process of resin molded articles. Then the trained DCNN named sssNet and well-known AlexNet are, respectively, incorporated with two SVMs to classify sample images with high recognition rate into accept as OK category or reject as NG one, in which compressed feature …

3-1,2-Dithiole-3-Thione As A Potentially Novel Therapeutic Compound For Sepsis Intervention, Y R. Li, Zhenquan Jia, Hong Zhu

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Through the history of modern medicine, bioactive components in natural products have been either employed directly as medicines or used as prototypes for synthetic drug development. This brief Research Highlights paper considers 3-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T), a member of the 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones-compounds which may naturally occur in cruciferous vegetables. Among 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones, D3T is the most potent member with regard to the capacity of inducing tissue defenses against oxidative and inflammatory stress. Oxidative and inflammatory stress is a major pathophysiological process involved in numerous human disorders, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, and sepsis, to name just a few. This article surveys recent major research …

Mississippi's War Against The War On Poverty: Food Power, Hunger, And White Supremacy, Bobby J. Smith Ii Jul 2019

Mississippi's War Against The War On Poverty: Food Power, Hunger, And White Supremacy, Bobby J. Smith Ii

Study the South

To ensure that the “militant agitators” did not take control of “industry, agriculture, and even labor,” a group of three powerful Mississippi congressmen—Jamie Whitten, Sen. John Stennis, and Sen. James Eastland—ignited a war against the War on Poverty. As part of President Johnson’s Great Society campaign of 1964, the War on Poverty promised to address and eradicate hunger throughout the nation by making it the “urgent business of all men and women of every race and every religion and every region.” However, in a place like Mississippi, specifically the Delta and plantation counties, the eradication of hunger through antipoverty programs …

Cost-Effective Methods To Retrofit Metal Culverts Using Composites, Mahmoud Reda Taha, Susan Bogus Halter Jul 2019

Cost-Effective Methods To Retrofit Metal Culverts Using Composites, Mahmoud Reda Taha, Susan Bogus Halter

Data

One of the current pressing problems for all DOTs is the corrosion-oriented deterioration of existing metal culverts. These metal culverts typically are designed for a life of 50 years. However, corrosion is making them last no longer than 30 years. A Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) pipe section has been evaluated as a fit-in GFRP profile liner for complete repair and rehabilitation of the corroded metal culvert with an expected life of 75 years. This is mainly because of the corrosion free nature of the GFRP material. A comprehensive rehabilitation methodology and laboratory scale three-point bending test was conducted to …

Investigation Of Surface Topology Effects On Metal Flow Of Aluminum And Steel During Hot Compression, Andrew Richard Matcha Jul 2019

Investigation Of Surface Topology Effects On Metal Flow Of Aluminum And Steel During Hot Compression, Andrew Richard Matcha

Master's Theses (2009 -)

An investigation was conducted to study the effect of die surface roughness and lay on metal flow and the friction factor under lubricated hot compression. 6061-T6 aluminum and AISI 1018 steel rings and rectangular bar stock workpieces were compressed on H-13 tool steel platens of varying roughnesses ranging from Ra 0.25 – 6.1 µm (10 – 240 µin). Each platen was machined in such a way to ensure that the surface roughness would be unidirectional. Platen temperatures of 149 °C and 204 °C (300 °F and 400 °F) were used for all aluminum ring samples whereas platen temperatures ranging from …

Where On Ice? Algorithmically Deconstructing Nhl Shot Locations As A Method For Player Classification, Devan Becker, Douglas G. Woolford, Charmaine B. Dean

Western Research Forum

Where do hockey players shoot from? How does this vary from player to player? We present the results of a study that uses data-driven statistical methods to investigate these questions. The locations of shots by National Hockey League (NHL) players from 2011 to 2017 are analyzed using a combination of an image recognition algorithm and spatial statistical methodology. An unsupervised classifier is applied to output from a spatial point process model in order to determine which shot locations best characterize a given player. We define the number of regions a priori, but the image recognition algorithm chooses the shape …

Data For A Comparison Of Sap Flux Among Three Sagebrush Communities Spanning Rain-To Snow-Dominated Precipitation Regimes, Harmandeep Sharma, Keith Reinhardt, Kathleen A. Lohse Jun 2019

Data For A Comparison Of Sap Flux Among Three Sagebrush Communities Spanning Rain-To Snow-Dominated Precipitation Regimes, Harmandeep Sharma, Keith Reinhardt, Kathleen A. Lohse

Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data

Artemisia spp. play a significant role in hydrological cycling of sagebrush steppe ecosystems. These sagebrush ecosystems cover a wide elevation gradient and are dominated by different species and subspecies of sagebrush. Water balance of sagebrush ecosystems varies along an elevation gradient with pulse-driven ecosystems located at lower elevation and drier sites and water storage (i.e., snow-dominated precipitation) ecosystems located at higher elevation and wetter sites. Thus, it is difficult to predict how water fluxes in these ecosystems will respond to changing climatic conditions along an elevation gradient. The primary objective of this study was to characterize sap flux in three …
