Part 1 (Rani et al. J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 871, 2019, pp. 450–476) of this study presented a stochastic theory for the clustering of monodisperse, rapidly settling, low-Stokes-number particle pairs in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The theory involved the development of closure approximations for the drift and diffusion fluxes in the probability density function (p.d.f.) equation for the pair relative positions $\boldsymbol{r}$ . In this part 2 paper, the theory is quantitatively analysed by comparing its predictions of particle clustering with data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of isotropic turbulence containing particles settling under gravity. The simulations were performed at …

Clustering Of Rapidly Settling, Low-Inertia Particle Pairs In Isotropic Turbulence. Part 1. Drift And Diffusion Flux Closures, Sarma L. Rani, Vijay K. Gupta, Donald L. Koch
PRC-Affiliated Research
In this two-part study, we present the development and analysis of a stochastic theory for characterizing the relative positions of monodisperse, low-inertia particle pairs that are settling rapidly in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. In the limits of small Stokes number and Froude number such that , closures are developed for the drift and diffusion fluxes in the probability density function (p.d.f.) equation for the pair relative positions. The theory focuses on the relative motion of particle pairs in the dissipation regime of turbulence, i.e. for pair separations smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale. In this regime, the theory approximates the fluid …

Effects Of Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) Extract In Streptozocin‐Induced Diabetic Model, Diana G. Sami, Marwa T. Badawy, Maha E. Mansour, Ahmed Abdellatif
Faculty Journal Articles
Herbal remedies have been used for centuries to ameliorate complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study is to compare the effects of the oral curcumin supplement versus parenteral administration of turmeric extract on diabetic complications in a streptozocin (STZ) diabetic model. STZ DM rats received low and high doses turmeric extract intraperitoneally as well as oral curcumin. Curcumin and turmeric extracts significantly reduced blood glucose and creatinine levels, but not urea, and caused an increase in uric acid. Low dose improved liver enzymes, while higher dose and oral administration caused an increase in the ALT and AST. …

Understanding School Sabotage Among Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence From Diverse Populations, Rachel Voth Schrag, Tonya Edmond, Anne Nordberg
Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive
Education is an important pathway to safety for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Recent work documents tactics of school sabotage (behaviors aimed at sabotaging education) identified by school staff and advocates. However, more needs to be known about the perspectives of survivors. As part of a multiphasic study of 435 female community college students, 20 semi-structured interviews with IPV survivors were conducted. Identified tactics included disrupting child care, emotional abuse, and using manipulation to limit access to campus or resources. Identified impacts include preventing focus, diminished academic achievement, emotional or mental health challenges, and instilling a desire to overcome. …

The brown spiny bug, Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stål (Hemiptera: Coreidae) is a key pest of leguminous crops in many countries in Africa, causing significant yield losses especially in cowpea, pigeon pea and common beans. Although C. tomentosicollis uses olfaction to aggregate, little is known about the identity of the aggregation pheromone. This study aimed to identify the aggregation pheromone of C. tomentosicollis and to test its potential role in the behavior of its egg parasitoid, Gryon sp. In Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, only male volatiles strongly attracted both sexes of C. tomentosicollis. Coupled gas chromatography/electroantennographic detection (GC/EAD) and GC/mass spectrometry were used …

Abstract for Paper 1: The open-closed boundary (OCB) defines a region of significant transformation in Earth's protective magnetic shield. Principle among these changes is the transition of magnetic field lines from having two foot points, one in each hemisphere, to one foot point at Earth, the other mapping to the solar wind (SW). Charged particles in the SW are able to follow these open field lines into Earth's upper atmosphere. The OCB also defines the polar cap boundary (PCB). Being able to identify and track the OCB allows study of several components of the geomagnetic system. Among them are the …

Rapid Invariant Encoding Of Scene Layout In Human Opa, Linda Henriksson, Marieke Mur, Nikolaus Kriegeskorte
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
Successful visual navigation requires a sense of the geometry of the local environment. How do our brains extract this information from retinal images? Here we visually presented scenes with all possible combinations of five scene-bounding elements (left, right, and back walls; ceiling; floor) to human subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). The fMRI response patterns in the scene-responsive occipital place area (OPA) reflected scene layout with invariance to changes in surface texture. This result contrasted sharply with the primary visual cortex (V1), which reflected low-level image features of the stimuli, and the parahippocampal place area (PPA), …
