"The study aimed to fundamentally understand how soil strength and hydraulic properties are impacted by recurring cycles of wetting and drying induced by climate variability, with the practical implication of forecasting the stability of highway embankment slopes. The review of literature on the effects of long-term cyclic wetting-drying phases on hydro-mechanical properties of clayey soils suggests that only a few cycles of wetting and drying can impact the strength and hydraulic conductivity, where the latter can increase several orders of magnitude. "There is a need for rapid and responsive infrastructure repair and construction after natural disaster events such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes. These natural disasters often shut down basic infrastructure systems, as experienced recently in several Region 6 states as well as in other states around the country. Accelerated construction practices are often used in these situations to speed up the traditional, and often slow, project delivery process. However, after a natural disaster, several and different types of transportation infrastructure components are …

Dataset For The Article: Rock Glaciers Of The Beartooth And Northern Absaroka Ranges, Montana, Usa, Zachary M. Seligman, Anna E. Klene
Geography Datasets
Six hundred sixty‐one rock glaciers in the northern Absaroka and Beartooth Ranges of south‐central Montana were digitized and evaluated using geographic information systems technology and an array of topographic and environmental parameters. Beartooth rock glaciers are larger, occur at higher elevations, receive more precipitation, and are subject to lower temperatures than northern Absaroka rock glaciers. Elevation is strongly correlated with rock glacier activity. Comparative analysis of these adjacent mountain ranges indicates that Beartooth geomorphic landscapes are shifting from predominantly glacial to periglacial regimes, and that the northern Absarokas have largely completed this transition. Because glaciers are declining in response to …

Capacitance sensors are widely used to monitor volumetric water content in both field and lab settings due to their low cost, ease of use, and capability of providing continuous measurements. However, these sensors are sensitive to temperature variations. Previous attempts to develop calibration equations that negate thermal effects incorporate many empirical constants that vary based on soil and sensor type. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of temperature on sensor performance and develop an improved calibration equation for a widely used capacitance soil moisture/temperature sensor, the ECH2O 5TM. Small cell experiments were conducted with silica sands …

In spite of strong theoretical interest, limited experimental studies have investigated the production of functionally-graded (FG) Aluminum-Carbon Nanotube (Al-CNT) composites. Such studies focused on axially-layered FG structures because of their ease of manufacturing. In order to take advantage of the full potential of FG Al-CNT, methods to fabricate bulk components of various shapes are needed. In the current work, Al-CNT functionally graded cylinders with varying CNT content along the radial direction were prepared for the first time. A novel and simple method was used to generate the composition gradient. The composite was designed to have 2 wt.% CNT at the …

Dark Play: Aesthetic Resistance In Lukács, Benjamin, And Adorno, Surti Singh
Dark Play: Aesthetic Resistance In Lukács, Benjamin, And Adorno, Surti Singh
Faculty Journal Articles
This article examines the turn to the aesthetic dimension in early 20th century critical theory, particularly in the work of Lukács, Benjamin and Adorno. It focuses on the concept of play (Spiel), which garnered particular attention as a possible form of aesthetic resistance to the reification of reason in modern society. The article traces the concept of play from the work of Lukács, who engaged with Schiller’s notion of the play-drive but ultimately viewed it to be an inadequate form of aesthetic resistance, to the work of Benjamin, who optimistically embraced the revolutionary possibility of play. In contrast, the article …

Background: Strategies for combatting residual malaria by targeting vectors outdoors are gaining importance as the limitations of primary indoor interventions are reached. Strategies to target ovipositing females or her offspring are broadly applicable because all mosquitoes require aquatic habitats for immature development irrespective of their biting or resting preferences. Oviposition site selection by gravid females is frequently studied by counting early instar larvae in habitats; an approach which is valid only if the number of larvae correlates with the number of females laying eggs. This hypothesis was tested against the alternative, that a higher abundance of larvae results from improved …

Phase Rule Classification Of Physical And Chemical Critical Effects In Liquid Mixtures, James K. Baird, Xingjian Wang, Joshua R. Lang, Pauline Norris
Phase Rule Classification Of Physical And Chemical Critical Effects In Liquid Mixtures, James K. Baird, Xingjian Wang, Joshua R. Lang, Pauline Norris
PRC-Affiliated Research
The isobaric heat capacity and the coefficient of thermal expansion of a binary liquid mixture with a critical point of solution diverge as functions of temperature in the critical region. When the same liquids are used as solvents for chemical reactions, the van't Hoff plot of the extent of reaction diverges in the critical region. According to the phase rule, the physical and chemical properties are isomorphic in the sense that in each case the critical behavior is determined by three fixed thermodynamic intensive variables.

Hydrocarbon Concentration Data Collected During A Coastal Survey Conducted In The Bay Of Campeche, Southern Gulf Of Mexico On 2016-08-09, Isabel Romero
C-IMAGE data
On 2016 a coastal survey was conducted in the Bay of Campeche (Mexico) to search for remnants of the Ixtoc-1 spill. This spill occurred on June 3 of 1979 releasing about 3 million barrels of oil during 9.75 months. In the aftermath of the spill (1979-1980), a survey conducted by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi indicated oil reached and impacted several areas, including mangroves, reefs and rocky beaches. Previous visual surveys and observations from locals confirmed the coastal areas were not impacted by oil before the Ixtoc-1 spill. In 2016, C-IMAGE II researchers conducted a similar survey with the additional goal …

SoMAS Research Data
Ground-based observatories use multi-sensor observations to characterize cloud and precipitation properties. A challenge is how to design strategies to best use these observations to understand the atmosphere and evaluate atmospheric numerical prediction models. We have developed the Cloud resolving model Radar SIMulator (CR-SIM), which uses output from high-resolution atmospheric models to emulate multi-wavelength, zenith-pointing, and scanning radar observables and multi-sensor (multi-radar and radar-lidar) integrated products. Here, we publish configuration files used for radar simulations using CR-SIM and atmospheric simulation outputs from the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model, which were used as inputs for the radar simulations.

Supply Chain Management Has Changed The World Economy, Michael Gravier
Supply Chain Management Has Changed The World Economy, Michael Gravier
Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles
I’m making a bold assertion: global supply chain management practices are single-handedly holding down inflation across the globe. Economists have been asking for a while now why inflation stubbornly remains below “ideal” levels, despite uses of various policy levers. There is some evidence that it could be due to the ability of modern global supply chains to continue to find new and cheaper sources of production—the power of competition—coupled with old fashioned managerial innovation.

Constructing Language Ideologies In A Multilingual, Second-Grade Classroom: A Case Study Of Two Emergent Bilingual Students’ Language-Use During Ebook Composing, Lindsey Rowe
Publications
Emergent bilingual students in the United States often attend schools that perpetuate English-only language ideologies. This article draws from qualitative data collected in a multilingual, second-grade classroom in the U.S. to explore how students co-constructed language ideologies across a schoolyear as they engaged in a daily eBook composing activity designed to counter the school's English-only policy and instead value the use of multiple languages. Conceptually, this paper draws upon the notion of language and literacy as social and ideological practices to demonstrate the ways students negotiated multiple, situated, and dynamic language ideologies about various heritage languages. Using data from two …
