Matching-Based Resource Allocation For Critical Mtc In Massive Mimo Lte Networks, Yasser Samy Gadallah
Matching-Based Resource Allocation For Critical Mtc In Massive Mimo Lte Networks, Yasser Samy Gadallah
Faculty Journal Articles
Supporting critical Machine-Type Communications (MTC) in addition to Human-Type Communications (HTC) is a major target for LTE networks to fulfill the 5G requirements. However, guaranteeing a stringent Quality-of-Service (QoS) for MTC, in terms of latency and reliability, while not sacrificing that of HTC is a challenging task from the radio resource management perspective. In this paper, we optimize the resource allocation process through exploiting the additional degrees of freedom introduced by massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) techniques. We utilize the effective bandwidth and effective capacity concepts to provide statistical guarantees for the QoS, in terms of probability of delay-bound violation, of …

Evolution Of Carbon Nanotubes And Their Metallurgical Reactions In Al-Based Composites In Response To Laser Irradiation During Selective Laser Melting, Ehab Salama, Amal Kamal Esawi
Faculty Journal Articles
Aluminium-based composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes are widely sought for their outstanding metallurgical and structural properties that largely depend on the manufacturing route. In this work, the process-structure-property relationship for a composite made from high-energy-ball-milled pure Al and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) processed by laser powder-bed-fusion additive manufacturing was investigated. The response of MWCNT to laser irradiation and their interfacial reactions with Al were probed in a holistic investigation. X-ray diffraction confirmed the partial transformation of C into Al-carbides in addition to the presence of some nano-crystalline graphitic materials. Microscopy revealed evidence of carbides segregation at the melt pool boundaries …

We address the issue of optimal investment in “preventative capital” to mitigate episodic, mobile-source air pollution events in Utah’s Wasatch Front region. We calibrate Berry et al.'s (2015) endogenous-risk model using a unique dataset related to the region’s "red air day" episodes occurring over the past decade. Our analysis demonstrates that, under a wide range of circumstances, the optimal steady-state level of preventative capital stock – raised through the issuance of a municipal “clean air bond” that can be used to fund more aggressive mitigation efforts – meets the standard for PM2.5 concentrations with positive social net benefits. We estimate …

Stay Curious : How Questions And Doubts Can Save Your Faith, Stephanie Williams O'Brien
Faculty Books
Most of us are going through the motions when it comes to faith, either believing we've found all the relevant answers to life's questions or believing none can be found. We shy away from our deepest questions about God because we fear the uncertainty on the other side. But when we make certainty and correct belief the end goal of faith, we miss out on the chance to know God more deeply and to participate in God's work in the world. In "Stay Curious" Pastor Steph shows us how to lean into our questions and embrace a life of curiosity. …

The doctoral advisor, typically the principal investigator (PI), is often characterized as a singular or primary mentor who guides students using a cognitive apprenticeship model. Alternatively, the cascading mentorship model describes the members of laboratories or research groups receiving mentorship from more senior laboratory members and providing it to more junior members (i.e., PIs mentor postdocs, postdocs mentor senior graduate students, senior students mentor junior students, etc.). Here we show that PIs laboratory and mentoring activities do not significantly predict students skill development trajectories, but the engagement of postdocs and senior graduate students in laboratory interactions do. We found that …

Signal and Image Processing Lab
In handwritten text skew and slant are inevitably introduced, but to varying degrees depending on several factors, such as the writing style, speed and mood of the writer. Therefore skew and slant detection in offline handwritten text words and their subsequent correction have become the critical pre-processing steps in Document Analysis and Retrieval systems to neutralize the variability in writing styles to improve the performance of word and character recognition systems. In this paper, we present two new methods for the estimation of slope and slant angles of offline handwritten word images along with two novel core-region detection techniques for …

Sexual Assault And Its Impacts In Young Adult Literature, Amanda Charles
Sexual Assault And Its Impacts In Young Adult Literature, Amanda Charles
BYU English Symposium
As sexual abuse has become a more prominent topic in the media it has become necessary to find helpful ways in which young adults can discuss sexual assault without feeling threatened. Young adult novels have become a vehicle through which teenagers can begin to understand sexual assault and the trauma that follows it. These novels are able to extend their reach to both victims and their peers. The following essay highlights my research on the effects of discussing sexual abuse in young adult literature. As a victim of sexual assault, I found solace in the young adult novel Speak which …

Background: Tsetse flies (Glossina sp.) are the vectors of human and animal trypanosomiasis throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Tsetse flies are distinguished from other Diptera by unique adaptations, including lactation and the birthing of live young (obligate viviparity), a vertebrate blood-specific diet by both sexes, and obligate bacterial symbiosis. This work describes the comparative analysis of six Glossina genomes representing three sub-genera: Morsitans (G. morsitans morsitans, G. pallidipes, G. austeni), Palpalis (G. palpalis, G. fuscipes), and Fusca (G. brevipalpis) which represent different habitats, host preferences, and vectorial capacity. Results: Genomic analyses validate established evolutionary relationships and sub-genera. Syntenic analysis of Glossina relative …

Propylene epoxidation using molecular oxygen and hydrogen mixture on Au-based catalysts has attracted attention because of high propylene oxide selectivity and the use of an inexpensive and environmental friendly oxidant. Single-site titanium on metal oxide supports plays an important role in achieving high reactivity and selectivity in propylene epoxidation. Here we used TiO2 atomic layer deposition (ALD) to synthesize single-site titanium imbedded in the SiO2 framework for propylene epoxidation. High temperature calcination was used as post-treatment to control the titania structure and Tisingle bondO coordination number. Using UV–vis spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we successfully established that under similar propylene …

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign salivary gland tumor. Kallikrein-related peptidases have been identified as biomarkers in many human tumors and may influence tumor behavior. We investigated KLK1−15 messenger ribonucleic acid and proteins in PA specimens to determine a KLK expression profile for this tumor. Fresh frozen PA tissue specimens (n = 26) and matched controls were subjected to quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction to detect KLK1−15 mRNA. Expression of KLK1, KLK12, KLK13, and KLK8 proteins were then evaluated via immunostaining techniques. Statistical analyses were performed with the level of significance set at P <.05. We observed downregulation of KLK1, KLK12, and KLK13 mRNA expression, and immunostaining studies revealed downregulation of the corresponding proteins. Histologic evidence of capsular perforation was associated with increased KLK1 protein expression. Tumor size was not associated with capsular invasion and/or perforation. This study is the first to detail a KLK expression profile for PA at both the transcriptional level and the protein level. Future work is required to develop clinical applications of these findings.

Mitigating Reflective Cracking Through The Use Of A Ductile Concrete Interlayer, Qian Zhang, Mohammad Khattak, Adway Das
Data
Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18PLSU13. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:
"Reflective cracking is considered one of the most important issues that causes premature deterioration of composite pavements. Many types of mitigation methods have been studied in the past. However, they are either not effective in delaying the reflective cracking, or they only extend the service life by a few years. To address this critical issue and significantly extend the service life of the composite pavement, in this research, a ductile interlayer made of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) was proposed. It was hypothesized …

"Geopolymer Cement (GPC) has drawn much attention in the recent years as an alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) for soil stabilization, pavements, bridges and other transportation structures due to their good mechanical properties in comparison to OPC. In addition, GPC can be processed at room temperatures from aqueous solutions of waste materials (e.g. fly ash) or abundant natural sources (e.g. clay), thereby significantly reducing CO2 production associated with processing of OPC. As such, GPC proves to be a more sustainable and …
