Marxism And Its ‘Other’: Why Do We Need Althusser To Understand Foucault?, Lika Rodin
Marxism And Its ‘Other’: Why Do We Need Althusser To Understand Foucault?, Lika Rodin
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
With the current renewal of interest in the Marxist theoretical tradition, revisiting its classical and neoclassical texts is crucial for understanding Marxism’s explanatory potential in the context of contemporary socio-political relationships. This paper makes productive efforts to review existing theoretical perspectives on non-coercive mechanisms of engaging the masses with particular value systems. I discuss Althusser’s theory of ideology: its content, central critique, and developments in relation to other compatible theories, the most salient of which is the idea of governmentality proposed by Foucault. Foucault’s approach is especially interesting due to its consistent attempts to separate itself from the critical tradition. …

Invasive plant species in eastern Africa severely impede rangeland and cropland productivity with dire consequences for livelihoods of agro-pastoralist communities. We produced the first occurrence and spread map of invasive plant species (Prosopis: Prosopis juliflora and Parthenium: Parthenium hysterophorus) for western Somaliland (a region of eastern Africa) using vegetation productivity and phenology trends from 250 m MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index) time-series data (2001–2014). Binomial logistic regression models were created to predict the presence or absence of the invasive species from the MODIS EVI phenometrics and vegetation productivity trends. Model training pixels were extracted from a …

Comparing Water Quality For Aquaponics Systems With Different Solids Removal Methods And Biofilter Media, And Effluent Output To Grow Beds, John W. Cutt, Heather M. Joesting, Brigette A. Brinton
Honors College Theses
Aquaponics is a closed-loop, sustainable method of food production that combines fish and plant production. This method of agriculture has the potential to bring fresh, local food to food-insecure areas, but challenges remain due to high operating costs. In order to develop a strong aquaponics industry, the creation of the most efficient system designs will be critical in optimizing production. This study’s purpose was to compare water quality between two aquaponics system designs that differ in filtration and solid removal methods. System 1 used a sock filter for solid removal and Kaldnes media for biofiltration while System 2 used a …

Recreating A Classical Sleeping Beauty Tutu And Bodice Using Modern Methods, Gennevieve L. Wright
Honors College Theses
Tchaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty was first produced in the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on January 15, 1890. Since the ballet’s debut, the design and construction of the leading tutus have evolved and spread considerably. In most modern renditions of this particular ballet, the silhouette of the tutu includes a skirt made of net tulle that sticks straight out from either the hip or the waist, depending on the exact style. This silhouette that is so integral to a majority of modern ballets did not appear until the 1870s, just twenty short years before Sleeping Beauty’s debut. This project will …

Metrics For Identifying Food Security Status, Nicholas Ogot
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
This chapter introduces food security as “a state when at all the time, all people can access adequate, safe and efficient nutritive food that meet their dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy and active healthy life.” While metrics refer to the measure of quantitative elements assessed in a research, a wide variety of data content obtained from the field is guided by a process of numerous methods that aim at efficiency. Food security metrics focus basically on the four domains of food security: availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability. The need for new metrics is essential for improving the …

Summary - Enset (Ensete ventricosum) is an important starch staple crop, cultivated primarily in south and southwestern Ethiopia. Enset is the main crop of a sustainable indigenous African system that ensures food security in a country that is food deficient. Related to the banana family, enset is similarly affected by plant-parasitic nematodes. Plant-parasitic nematodes impose a huge constraint on agriculture. The distribution, population density and incidence of plant-parasitic nematodes of enset was determined during August 2018. A total of 308 fields were sampled from major enset-growing zones of Ethiopia. Eleven plant-parasitic nematode taxa were identified, with Pratylenchus (lesion nematode) being …

Edible insects are receiving attention as a protein source in the food and feed sector. However, successful commercialisation requires mass production matched with appropriate processing and storage techniques. The quality of dried and pulverised black soldier fly larvae stored in woven polypropylene (PP) sacks, polyethylene (PE) bags and plastic containers with screw lid (PL) in ambient and refrigerated environments was monitored over six months. Chemical indicators (oxidation, fatty acid profile), microbiological parameters (total viable counts, yeast and moulds, Enterobacteriaceae, presumptive coliforms, Salmonella) and colour change were examined. Temperature and relative humidity of the storage environments were monitored. In the ambient …

Rampant increase and diversification of synthetic pesticides poses health, environmental, and livelihood risks especially to smallholder farmers who dominate agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Legal mechanisms for regulating pesticides, although important, have not fully addressed the dangers of ecological services disruptions due to accumulation of different pesticides over time. Legal mechanisms also are not well suited to developing countries because of weak monitoring and enforcement capacity. Understanding the role of other accountability mechanisms in farming, driven by norm leaders in the community, is thus of paramount importance. We investigated the effectiveness of a traditional accountability mechanism, i.e., local councils of elders …

Understanding the ability of parasitoid insects to succeed in new host populations is a relevant question for biological control and adaptive mechanisms. Cotesia typhae is an African parasitoid specialized on the moth Sesamiae nonagrioides, also called the Mediterranean corn borer. Two Kenyan strains of C. typhae differ in their virulence against a new host population from France. We explored behavioral and physiological hypotheses about this differentiation. Cotesia genus belongs to a group of Hymenoptera in which females inject a domesticated virus in their host to overcome its resistance. Since viral particles are injected along with eggs and since the strain …
Antibiotic Releasing Bone-Void Filler For The Treatment Of Osteomyelitis: An Approach To Treat Infection And Aid Bone Regeneration, Mohammad Raquibul Hasan
Antibiotic Releasing Bone-Void Filler For The Treatment Of Osteomyelitis: An Approach To Treat Infection And Aid Bone Regeneration, Mohammad Raquibul Hasan
Pharmacy
Osteomyelitis or bone infections remain very difficult to treat despite advances in treatment regimens and surgical technics. The bone microenvironment and compromised vasculature in addition to infected prosthesis and implants that were put in the bone during prior surgery impedes the antibiotic partition into the bone from systemic therapy in many cases. Treatment often includes surgical debridement of the infected bone and surrounding tissue, removal of implants, systemic antibiotic therapy accompanied with antibiotic containing bone void filler, in most cases polymethylmethacylate (PMMA) based bone cement. Unfortunately, PMMA has many associated problems, including non-biodegradability, inconsistent antibiotic release, and a surface susceptible …

The Determinants Of Aeronautical Charges Of U.S.Airports: A Spatial Analysis, Fecri Karanki
Statistics
Using U.S. airport data from 2009 through 2016, this thesis examines the determinants of aeronautical charges of large and medium hub airports and accounts for the spatial dependence of neighboring airports in a spatial panel regression model. The major finding of this thesis are (1) U.S. airports’ aeronautical charges are spatially dependent, and neighboring airport charges are spatially and positively correlated; (2) there is evidence of airport cost recovery through non-aeronautical revenues; (3) airports sharing non-aeronautical revenues with airlines charge lower aeronautical fees than their peers that do not share revenues; (4) aeronautical charges increase with higher delays.
Negative Punishment During Alternative Reinforcement Does Not Reduce Subsequent Resurgence, Alexander Houchins, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter
Negative Punishment During Alternative Reinforcement Does Not Reduce Subsequent Resurgence, Alexander Houchins, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Resurgence of previously suppressed behavior can occur when differential reinforcement is discontinued. Recent research has investigated strategies to mitigate resurgence, such as punishing the target response during alternative reinforcement. Loss of reinforcers contingent on the target response (response cost) does not appear to attenuate resurgence, but these effects had not been replicated with other negative-punishment procedures, such as timeout. This study investigated effects of timeout on subsequent resurgence when adults responded to earn points during a computer task. Timeout did not affect subsequent resurgence. These findings, in combination with previous research, suggest that negative punishment may not reduce the likelihood …
Crosslinking Of Polyamides Using Dianhydrides, Diacid Chloride And Dialdehyde: A Promising Approach For Water Treatment, Sonia Zulfiqar
Crosslinking Of Polyamides Using Dianhydrides, Diacid Chloride And Dialdehyde: A Promising Approach For Water Treatment, Sonia Zulfiqar
Faculty Journal Articles
New crosslinked polyamides were successfully produced from the condensation of pre-synthesized monomer, 5-(2,2,2-trifluoroacetamido)isophthaloylchloride (TFAIAC) and diamines at low temperature. These polyamides were used as promising metal-chelating adsorbents due to the presence of O and N donor sites on the crosslinked polyamides. For this purpose, trifluoroacetic anhydride was used to protect the amino group of 5-aminoisophthalic acid, thus generating 5-(2,2,2-trifluoroacetamido)isophthalic acid (TFAIA). TFAIA was converted into TFAIAC using oxalyl chloride, which was exploited as a suitable monomer for the synthesis of aromatic polyamides. Amino groups were then set free under basic conditions and the crosslinking was carried out through amino groups …

Low-Complexity Semi-Blind Channel Estimation Algorithms For Vehicular Communications Using The Ieee 802.11 P Standard, Moustafa M. Awad, Karim Gomaa Seddik, Ayman Elezabi
Faculty Journal Articles
The vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications channel is highly time-varying, making reliable communication difficult. This problem is particularly challenging because the de facto standard for V2V communications, the IEEE 802.11p standard, is based on the IEEE 802.11a standard, which was designed for the indoor and relatively stationary wireless LAN channel. In particular, the frame structure, which allows large packets and has low pilot density makes channel estimation difficult. In this paper, we propose several semi-blind channel estimation and tracking algorithms that are suitable for highly time-varying channels using the 802.11p frame structure. Two of the proposed schemes utilize the finite alphabet property …

Low-Temperature Thermoelectric Performance Of Novel Polyaniline/Iron Oxide Composites With Superior Seebeck Coefficient, Hussein Badr, Nageh Khalaf Allam
Faculty Journal Articles
The large amount of heat loss at low temperatures (up to 250 °C), more than 70% of the total waste heat, motivates the market to develop new materials for low-temperature thermoelectric applications. To this end, organic materials can be excellent potential candidates with the additional advantages of light weight, ease of synthesis and processing, eco-friendly and being sustainable materials. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of polyaniline (PANI) in its conductive emeraldine form via a facile chemical oxidative polymerization process. The conductivity of the fabricated PANI, with exceptional low degree of protonation and additional structure deflection, originates from the excess Cl− …
