Scene-Independent Motion Pattern Segmentation In Crowded Video Scenes Using Spatio-Angular Density-Based Clustering, Abhilash K. Pai, A. Kotegar Karunakar, U. Raghavendra

Open Access archive

Motion pattern segmentation for crowded video scenes is an open problem because of the inability of existing approaches to tackle unpredictable crowd behaviour across varied scenes. To address this problem, we propose a Spatio-Angular Density-based Clustering (SADC) approach, which performs motion pattern segmentation by clustering the spatial and angular information obtained from the input trajectories. The k-nearest neighbours of each trajectory and the angular deviation between trajectories constitute the spatial and angular information, respectively. Effective integration of the spatio-angular information with an improvised density-based clustering algorithm makes this approach scene-independent. The performance of most clustering algorithms in the literature is …

Alchemy In Russian Literature, Hamlet Isakhanli Jan 2020

Alchemy In Russian Literature, Hamlet Isakhanli

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Along with sciences, alchemical activity heavily influenced literature and art, and the images of alchemists were widely reflected in the works of poets, writers, artists, philosophers and scientists. In Eastern and Western literature of ancient, medieval, and modern times, alchemy, together with the intriguing images of alchemists, was used also as a source of vivid metaphors. This article is devoted to the subject of alchemy in Russian literature, investigating which writers were interested in it and how it was developed in Russia. Prominent Russian authors’ poetic and prosaic writings have been perused throughout the research paper and it is believed …

New And Interesting Aerial Diatom Assemblages From Southwestern Iceland, Paula C. Furey, Kalina M. Manoylov, Rex L. Lowe Jan 2020

New And Interesting Aerial Diatom Assemblages From Southwestern Iceland, Paula C. Furey, Kalina M. Manoylov, Rex L. Lowe

Faculty and Staff Works

Examination of algal assemblages from aerial environments around the globe, especially those from pseudoaerial habitats found on moistened rocks underneath waterfalls or around springs and seeps, reveals the presence of unique diatom floras. Yet, diatom assemblages from northern regions like Iceland remain understudied, especially those from the volcanic rock outcrops and boulders that create euaerial habitats where biota receive moisture from the atmosphere or the rock itself. During the summers of 2013 and 2015, we examined the biodiversity of mostly euaerial, but also pseudoaerial, diatom assemblages collected from volcanic rock outcrops or large boulders on the landscape from southwestern Iceland. …

High mass X-ray binaries are among the brightest X-ray sources in the Milky Way, as well as in nearby Galaxies. Thanks to their highly variable emissions and complex phenomenology, they have attracted the interest of the high energy astrophysical community since the dawn of X-ray Astronomy. In more recent years, they have challenged our comprehension of physical processes in many more energy bands, ranging from the infrared to very high energies. In this review, we provide a broad but concise summary of the physical processes dominating the emission from high mass X-ray binaries across virtually the whole electromagnetic spectrum. These …

Leibniz Algebras With Absolute Maximal Lie Subalgebras, G. R. Biyogmam, Calvin Tcheka Jan 2020

Leibniz Algebras With Absolute Maximal Lie Subalgebras, G. R. Biyogmam, Calvin Tcheka

Faculty and Staff Works

A Lie subalgebra of a given Leibniz algebra is said to be an absolute maximal Lie subalgebra if it has codimension one. In this paper, we study some properties of non-Lie Leibniz algebras containing absolute maximal Lie subalgebras. When the dimension and codimension of their Lie-center are greater than two, we refer to these Leibniz algebras as s-Leibniz algebras (strong Leibniz algebras). We provide a classification of nilpotent Leibniz s-algebras of dimension up to five.

Transformative Learning Experiences Through Short-Term Study Abroad Programs, Tsu Ming Chiang, Jenq Foung Yao

Faculty and Staff Works

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected in the 21st century, it is crucial to teach college students how to acquire cultural competence as global citizens. Learning through study abroad involves total immersion and active engagement in understanding other cultures and people. It challenges individuals’ ethnocentric beliefs and habitual frames of reference to foster inclusive and global perspectives as transformative learners (Mezirow, 1997). Furthermore, even in short-term study abroad programs, through intentional planning, faculty may embed multiple high impact educational learning experiences in their courses. Collaboration with a foreign university can further enhance students’ cultural knowledge by creating peer interactions in …

Gender Is A Drag: A Study Of How Drag Performance Affects Awareness The Communication Of Gender, Kaylee "Artie" Peters Jan 2020

Gender Is A Drag: A Study Of How Drag Performance Affects Awareness The Communication Of Gender, Kaylee "Artie" Peters

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

After conducting an online open-ended ethnographic survey through Qualtrics in order to assess the relationship between drag performers and gender as a form of communication, an analysis was prepared based on 19 open-ended surveys with an age range of 20-55. The RQ was to find out to what extent drag changes a performers’ awareness of the communicative properties of gender. The study failed to reject the null hypothesis. The findings concluded that performers consistently acknowledged gender and drag as communicative acts, but inconsistently saw their own gender as a communicative act. One limitation is the low response rate resulting in …

On Angels’ Wings: Idolatry In Viktoria Tokareva’S “Five Figures On A Pedestal” And Lyudmila Ulitskaya’S “Angel”, Courtney E. Bentz

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

In his essays on Greek deities, Ralph Waldo Emerson declared: “Every man is a divinity in disguise, a god playing the fool.” While the idea of gods taking a corporeal form or angels walking among humans is a common literary trope, seldom do mortal characters find themselves compared to the divine without negative repercussions. Select post-Soviet women writers, however, flip this trope to explore the opposite. They instead embrace the human as holy, restrained by little consequence, as a means to highlight its destructive qualities in the context of an intimate relationship. These contemporary authors, Viktoria Tokareva and Lyudmila Ulitskaya, …

Knowledge Of, And Beliefs About, Access To Screening Facilities And Cervical Cancer Screening Behaviors Among Low-Income Women In New Jersey, Stephanie A.Navarro Silvera, Elisa V. Bandera, Beth A. Jones, Alejandra M. Kaplan, Kitaw Demisse

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Racial/ethnic disparities in cancer outcomes have been well documented. Access to Pap testing may account for some of the variation in the racial and socioeconomic differences in cervical cancer outcomes. Literature exploring perceived access to care as it relates to women of color and low-income women is lacking. The goal of the study was to evaluate and characterize the relationship between what respondents believe about access to free/low-cost screening facilities and screening behaviors among low-income women in New Jersey. We used multivariate logistic regression to investigate belief about access to affordable screening on cancer screening behaviors using data from a …

Ambassador Of Cajun Music: Jimmy C. Newman, 1927-2014, Michael Green

History Faculty Research

In February 1765, the first boat with French-speaking refugees from Acadia in Nova Scotia arrived in the present-day state of Louisiana, where their description of themselves as Acadians changed, just as regional dialects change, into Cajuns. Their departure was part of what one historian of Cajun culture calls an “ethnic cleansing.” The British had acquired French Canada two years before and deported the Catholic Acadians to other colonies; a group of them chose instead to head for what they thought was French territory. It turned out that the Treaty of Paris of 1763, which had conveyed French Canada from France …

International Gaming Institute Faculty Research

During recent years, while electronic sports (esports) has increasingly become a positive mainstream cultural phenomenon, it also may have several socio-economic implications, such as the growth of esports betting. Much like betting in sport, betting on esports has become a prominent form of gambling. However, there is still a paucity of knowledge on the demographic characteristics of this gambling cohort, particularly in regard to its relationship to video game play and spectatorship. In the present study, past-year video gamers (N = 1368) completed an online survey. Survey questions inquired about their esports event spectating, video game play, and esports betting …

Pitiless Cruelty: Cynicism, Capitalism, And Gambling In The Writing Of Mario Puzo, David Schwartz

Executive Vice President & Provost Faculty Research

The Godfather made him a wealthy man, but Mario Puzo’s long years as a struggling writer and childhood in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen conditioned him to treat money—and those who made a great deal of it—with suspicion. This paper explores how Puzo’s cynical views of capitalism were buttressed by his experiences as a self-described “mildly degenerate” gambling, and how they are expressed in both his fiction and non-fiction.

The oft-quoted advice to “Follow your passion” is little help to people who have no particular interests or too many. However, if you want to do research, you need to pick one or more specific topics to study. I myself am interested in many research topics and have a tendency to take on too many projects and feel overwhelmed. I’ve met several students who have the same issue. I’ve also met students who weren’t sure where their interests lay and who waited for inspiration to strike rather than diving in.

Leveraging Data To Reduce Gun Violence: The Cincinnati Experience, Matthew G. Hammer, Tamara D. Herold

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

The year 2020 has amplified demands for more equitable policing, more efficient government, and greater transparency. As police leaders around the world attempt to maintain order and safety during a period of large-scale civil unrest, they must also address criticisms that existing law enforcement practices include biased interventions and reinforce systemic racism. Many law enforcement agencies are also responding to increasing numbers of serious crimes that disproportionately affect society’s most vulnerable communities, while simultaneously facing calls to “defund the police” fueled by accusations that challenge the legitimacy of their policing tactics. The strategies used by agencies to manage protests and …

Negative Punishment During Alternative Reinforcement Does Not Reduce Subsequent Resurgence, Alexander Houchins, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter Jan 2020

Negative Punishment During Alternative Reinforcement Does Not Reduce Subsequent Resurgence, Alexander Houchins, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Resurgence of previously suppressed behavior can occur when differential reinforcement is discontinued. Recent research has investigated strategies to mitigate resurgence, such as punishing the target response during alternative reinforcement. Loss of reinforcers contingent on the target response (response cost) does not appear to attenuate resurgence, but these effects had not been replicated with other negative-punishment procedures, such as timeout. This study investigated effects of timeout on subsequent resurgence when adults responded to earn points during a computer task. Timeout did not affect subsequent resurgence. These findings, in combination with previous research, suggest that negative punishment may not reduce the likelihood …
