The GATA and PAX-SIX-EYA-DACH transcriptional networks (PSEDNs) are essential for proper development across taxa. Here, we demonstrate novel PSEDN roles in vivo in Drosophila hematopoiesis and in human erythropoiesis in vitro. Using Drosophila genetics, we show that PSEDN members function with GATA to block lamellocyte differentiation and maintain the prohemocyte pool. Overexpression of human SIX1 stimulated erythroid differentiation of human erythroleukemia TF1 cells and primary hematopoietic stem-progenitor cells. Conversely, SIX1 knockout impaired erythropoiesis in both cell types. SIX1 stimulation of erythropoiesis required GATA1, as SIX1 overexpression failed to drive erythroid phenotypes and gene expression patterns in GATA1 knockout cells. SIX1 …

The back-haul networks of 5G are formed by heterogeneous links which need to handle massive traffic. The service providers are not able to provide good QoS for their users. The technology like Software Defined Networks(SDN) and Network Slicing helps a little for a service provider to providing QoS for multiple links. The service providers face a challenge in the efficient utilization of resources to fulfill the QoS requirement of users to comply with the growth and thereby increasing the revenue. These problems require an accurate traffic model to determine the steady-state of the system. The proposed model uses an architecture …

The nuclear lamina is a proteinaceous network offilaments that provide both structural and gene regulatory functions by tethering proteins and large domains of DNA, the so-called lamina-associated domains (LADs), to the periphery of the nucleus. LADs are a large fraction of the mammalian genome that are repressed, in part, by their association to the nuclear periphery. The genesis and maintenance of LADs is poorly understood as are the proteins that participate in these functions. In an effort to identify proteins that reside at the nuclear periphery and potentially interact with LADs, we have taken a two-pronged approach. First, we have …

Hybridization of composites is one of the many ways to optimize cost, manufacturing process and strength required for a particular application. This demands a need for knowledge about the best possible ways to deal with the dissimilar materials in the composite system. Very little light has been shed about the stacking sequence implemented while dealing with non-woven natural fiber mats and 3D woven glass fiber fabric as reinforcement and effects of different models on the strength of composite - which has been dealt very vividly in this research work. Two types of hybrid stacking sequence were implemented using non-woven bamboo …

Introduction: Melioidosis, caused by the soil saprophyte B. pseudomallei, is a ‘neglected’ infectious disease in many Asian countries. It remained undiagnosed or misdiagnosed in India for long due to a lack of awareness and facilities to diagnose the disease; however, it is slowly gaining the status of an emerging disease recently. The disease is well known as a great mimicker, as the presentations are very similar to many other tropical diseases, and more importantly, to tuberculosis . Methodology: A prospective observational study was conducted from January 2016 – December 2018 to find the occurance of melioidosis in patients with ‘recurrent’ …

The Russian Federation is the largest and one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world, however no centralized reference database of genetic variation exists to date. Such data are crucial for medical genetics and essential for studying population history. The Genome Russia Project aims at filling this gap by performing whole genome sequencing and analysis of peoples of the Russian Federation. Here we report the characterization of genome-wide variation of 264 healthy adults, including 60 newly sequenced samples. People of Russia carry known and novel genetic variants of adaptive, clinical and functional consequence that in many cases show …

Racial/ethnic disparities in cancer outcomes have been well documented. Access to Pap testing may account for some of the variation in the racial and socioeconomic differences in cervical cancer outcomes. Literature exploring perceived access to care as it relates to women of color and low-income women is lacking. The goal of the study was to evaluate and characterize the relationship between what respondents believe about access to free/low-cost screening facilities and screening behaviors among low-income women in New Jersey. We used multivariate logistic regression to investigate belief about access to affordable screening on cancer screening behaviors using data from a …

After a half-century of failed top-down international aid efforts that ignore basic microeconomics, the New Development Economics (NDE) offers an alternative. First, sound institutions (such as rule of law, property rights, contractual enforcement, etc.); second, respect for basic microeconomic principles (from incentives to knowledge). Within the New Development Economics, development economist William Easterly offers controversial and innovative insights; one of these is the ineffectiveness of education-alone, and without sound institutions-for promoting growth. We argue that Easterly is generally correct, but we improve on Easterly's lessons by dehomogenizing education. Specifically, education for girls has high marginal returns: at the micro level, …

The USFWS is working collaboratively with State Wildlife Agencies, Universities, Non-profits and others in the southeast to address the National Listing Workplan. The USFWS needs up-to-date information on current status and the likely impact of future changes to develop Species Status Assessments (SSAs), which help inform listing decisions. States, Universities and other partners are providing species expertise, location data, analytical support and logistical support (e.g. surveys). However, a significant knowledge gap remains in understanding potential species distributions, from which status surveys can be more strategically implemented. This project provides a bridge between species location information and the SSAs by developing …
Recreating A Classical Sleeping Beauty Tutu And Bodice Using Modern Methods, Gennevieve L. Wright
Recreating A Classical Sleeping Beauty Tutu And Bodice Using Modern Methods, Gennevieve L. Wright
Honors College Theses
Tchaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty was first produced in the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on January 15, 1890. Since the ballet’s debut, the design and construction of the leading tutus have evolved and spread considerably. In most modern renditions of this particular ballet, the silhouette of the tutu includes a skirt made of net tulle that sticks straight out from either the hip or the waist, depending on the exact style. This silhouette that is so integral to a majority of modern ballets did not appear until the 1870s, just twenty short years before Sleeping Beauty’s debut. This project will …

In today’s world, continuous fiber reinforced composite materials are extensively used in the aerospace, automotive and other structural industries. Since the applications of such fibers demand for a high safety rating, it is of utmost importance for engineers who design such materials to analyze its safety. When cracks are developed in such materials, the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties also get altered as a function of the cracks. Previous studies have shown that changes in electrical properties can be directly correlated with the development of cracks in the material which can then be used to predict the remaining life of …

The single constrained Quality of Service (QoS) routing in Mobile Ad-hoc NETwork (MANET) is disastrous in consideration of MANET characteristics, inference, collision and link failure as it maintains a single path. The QoS enabled routing yields better packet delivery and maintains consistency among nodes in the network by incorporating multi-constrained and multipath routing. The Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) is best suited source routing algorithm to maintain multipath information at the source node, but performance degrades with larger number of mobile nodes. Multi-layer mechanism should be incorporated to maintain QoS metric information spreads across multiple layers of TCP/IP protocol stack. The …

We studied the diagnostic accuracy of MRI in 35 adult patients with traumatic brachial plexus injury in comparison with intra operative findings. The overall sensitivity to detect root avulsions was 39% and specificity was 75%. MRI was more useful in the diagnosis of lower root avulsions. At trunk and division level injuries, the sensitivity was 87% but specificity was only 26%. It was not able to differentiate the type and extent of post-ganglionic injuries. The accuracy of pseudomeningocele as avulsion on surgical finding was 96% (27/28). Pseudomeningocele correlates well with root avulsions. Its presence warrants early referral and surgical exploration.

Studies on chromatin structure and function have gained a revived popularity. Histone chaperones are significant players in chromatin organization. They play a significant role in vital nuclear functions like transcription, DNA replication, DNA repair, DNA recombination, and epigenetic regulation, primarily by aiding processes such as histone shuttling and nucleosome assembly/disassembly. Like the other eukaryotes, plants also have a highly orchestrated and dynamic chromatin organization. Plants seem to have more isoforms within the same family of histone chaperones, as compared with other organisms. As some of these are specific to plants, they must have evolved to perform functions unique to plants. …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, which is commonly seen in older individuals. This is characterized by cognitive dysfunction, which leads to dementia. Pharmacological treatments for AD are mainly targeted on its symptoms like memory loss and cognitive impairment. The pathophysiology involved in AD is intra-neuronal accumulation of hyper-phosphorylated tau protein as neurofibrillary tangle and extra cellular beta amyloid plaque deposition, which is due to oxidative stress. Here we review the neuro-protective effects of Resveratrol (RSV) and its treatment efficacy in AD. RSV is a naturally available polyphenolic compound, which has antioxidant, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. RSV crosses …

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a dynamic process by which the cells transdifferentiate into two or more somatic states. The metastatic spread begins with tumor cells disseminated from the primary tumor via intravasation, hematogenous transit and extravasation to reach the distant organs to form micro- or macrometastasis. Dissemination of tumor cells or metastasis is a crucial stage in cancer progression and accounts for majority of cancer associated morbidity and mortality. Advances in technology has now enabled detection and capture of tumor cells that escape from primary site into the bloodstream. Such tumor cells which are found in transit in the blood …
