Copepod Feeding Strategy Determines Response To Seawater Viscosity: Videography Study Of Two Calanoid Copepod Species, Abigail Tyrell

SoMAS Research Data

Calanoid copepods, depending on feeding strategy, have different behavioral and biological controls on their movements, thereby responding differently to environmental conditions such as changes in seawater viscosity. To understand how copepod responses to environmental conditions are mediated through physical, physiological, and/or behavioral pathways, we used high-speed microvideography to compare two copepod species, Acartia hudsonica and Parvocalanus crassirostris, under different temperature, viscosity, and dietary conditions. Acartia hudsonica exhibited “sink and wait” feeding behavior and typically responded to changes in seawater viscosity; increased seawater viscosity reduced particle-capture behavior and decreased the size of the feeding current. In contrast, P. crassirostris continuously …

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. The deterioration of emissions control systems in a spark ignition engine is predominantly a gradual process of wear and tear occurring as vehicles accumulate mileage. As new innovations in engine and emissions technology have been progressively introduced to meet lower emissions targets, the impact of gradual deterioration of hardware has become more challenging to identify and quantify in the repair industry. When a pioneering emissions control programme utilising remote sensing to detect high emitting gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles was to be introduced in Hong Kong, it became apparent the repair industry needed specialised …

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd On-road remote sensing technology measures the concentration ratios of pollutants over CO2 in the exhaust plume in half a second when a vehicle passes by a measurement site, providing a rapid, non-intrusive and economic tool for vehicle emissions monitoring and control. A key assumption in such measurement is that the emission ratios are constant for a given plume. However, there is a lack of study on this assumption, whose validity could be affected by a number of factors, especially the engine operating conditions and turbulence. To guide the development of the next-generation remote sensing system, this …

Deactivation And Regeneration Study Of A Co-Promoted Moo3 Catalyst In Hydrogenolysis Of Dibenzofuran, Jie Zhang, Chuang Li, Weixiang Guan, Xiaozhen Chen, Xiao Chen, Chi Wing Tsang, Changhai Liang

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

The efficient hydrogenolysis of dibenzofuran (DBF) was investigated at 360 °C and atmospheric hydrogen pressure with Co/MoO3 catalysts. All catalysts selectively cleaved the C-O bond and thus effectively transformed DBF to biphenyl (BP) at relatively moderate conditions. A strong promotional effect in the catalytic activity was observed over the Co/MoO3 catalyst with the optimal Co content of 3 wt %, as evidenced by the decreasing activation barrier which was resulted from Co-facilitated increase of active Mo species and acidic sites. The best catalytic activity was realized with almost 100% yield of BP over Co/MoO3. During 300 h of catalyst life …

Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in immune regulation, and a common miRNA-146a polymorphism (rs2910164) increased the odds of falciparum malaria in pregnant African women. Here, we examined whether this association holds true in a different population, that is, 449 mainly male and adult malaria patients and 666 community controls in southwestern India. Plasmodium vivax malaria (67%) predominated over falciparum malaria (11%) and mixed species infections (22%). Overall, 59% of the study participants carried the miRNA-146a polymorphism. However, it was not associated with the odds of malaria, irrespective of parasite species. This underlines the importance of considering the complexities of …

The head and neck region consists of several potential tissue spaces that are formed by the fascial layer. The buccal space is an area of anatomic significance due to its small size and distribution of adipose tissue. Unilateral buccal space masses often pose a diagnostic challenge owing to the diversity of tissues in the area. Here, we report four such cases of buccal space masses arising from different tissues, which presented as unilateral buccal space swelling. This report also highlights the various causes and the differential diagnoses of unilateral buccal space masses.

All Undergraduate Projects

The Beechcraft V-tail Bonanza is a popular general aviation aircraft. Over 10,000 were built, but with the weakness of magnesium skinned control surfaces. Control surfaces on aircraft must be light, and precisely balanced. The V-tail Bonanza uses a unique “ruddervator” system, which combines the rudder and elevator into one surface to reduce drag, controlling the pitch and yaw of the aircraft. Magnesium was chosen by the designers for its lightweight properties, but corrodes badly and is becoming difficult to source for replacement parts. Aerodynamic flutter, from flexibility in the lightly built surface, and corrosion can cause breakup in flight, and …

Lichen planus is a common chronic inflammatory condition that affects skin and mucous membranes. Management is often delayed because of patient embarrassment or misdiagnosis by the clinician. Early recognition and treatment is essential to reduce the morbidity of this condition. We present a 58-year-old woman diagnosed with generalized hypertrophic lichen planus, a rare event, reported to occur usually on lower extremities, but found to be generalized in our patient, requiring excision of symptomatic lesions. We suggest a multidisciplinary approach to allay the anxiety and symptoms of these patients and to improve the quality of life and clinical outcomes.

Diseases With Skin And Lung Involvement: Pulmonologist's Perspective, Vishnu Moleyar, Anupama Noojibail

Open Access archive

A variety of conditions/diseases can involve skin and lungs together. Knowledge about these conditions and the skin and respiratory manifestations in these conditions will lead to early diagnosis and proper management. Some of the dermatological manifestations may be very classical where the diagnosis will be obvious at a glance. Many a times, dermatological manifestations may narrow the differential diagnoses. In some cases, dermatological manifestations may indicate the severity/stage of the disease and prognosis. In some diseases with dermatological manifestations, where no obvious respiratory symptoms or signs are evident, screening for the underlying lung disease may be indicated. Some dermatological manifestations …
